I'll let others with more breakage chime in, but I can't think of anyone who had a problem with the standard centre plate before they had a problem with the standard gears - the plate generally just gets replaced for safety when the gearset is upgraded.

As for the gearsets, its not like they are OK at 600Nm and break at 601. Their longevity is a combination of how much torque you are making and how gentle you are on shifts (or not).

I thought it could be an issue because the standard plate was flexing when stressed.

Maybe the original gear set will hold a bit better without flex?

Last time on the dyno it made around 670nm at the hubs. Now it have bigger turbo and better intake but have not been on a dyno yet.

The car is being used from family trips to drag race events. So the shifts can be a little violent.

It is grinding if I shift to fast so was thinking I should overhaul it soon.

You're already well into "gearbox is a consumable" territory there. A billet plate will either make it (effectively) 1% stronbger or make it last one more pass. At some point you'll probably tear 3rd gear into small chunks and regret all the life decisions that came before it.

Ah, that was not the answer I was hoping for. Is it only third gear that is the weak spot?

Or do you have to change the whole gearset to make it hold some power?

There isn’t really a cheap upgrade here. If someone made a decent, bolt in 6 speed that holds some grunt, it would do very well.

The 5 speeds suck. You can put a

- OSG 5 speed gear set into it. Ratios are tall so it zaps the “zing” out of it. Had one, busted it.

- PPG 5 speed gear set synchro or dog’s. Ratios are even taller.

- An overpriced Getrag. Nice to drive, expensive to source now.

- A sequential of some sort. Expensive, very expensive.

How many times do you pop a 5 speed before you throw the toys out of the cot?

I thought I'd heard rumor of someone that was developing a 6 speed kit to convert the 5 speed box. But maybe I was thinking of the PPG 6 speed sequential? That's about half the price of a car...

And this is the the thing with a high powered, AWD, heavy car. The engine is easy, the driveline costs just as much as the engine. 🤷‍♂️

Welcome to GTRland.

Whatever you think your budget is, double it.

Whatever you think your timeline is, triple it.

Isn't there a PAR engineering gearset that has closer to stock ratios? And they claim they'll do whatever ratios you want.

Yeah, saw the ratios, not impressed. Would like the punch I have in the first gears now. With those ratios it won't be the same.

Also want the h pattern gearing, or at least a quiet gear set that don't need to come apart for service each year.

Looks like the only "reasonable" way Is a 8hp70 transmission, but where is the fun in that🤷‍♂️

Wouldn’t touch par if they gave it to me.

You need to ask how much power you’re looking to make and then add about 50% to it because that’s what you’ll end up making

The factory box says no more at about 350kw or so, the upgraded synchro boxes won’t handle much over 500kw for long and at that point you’re looking at an auto or dog engagement manual,

once you’ve gone dog engagement you may as well go sequential, they cost a little bit more but it’s worth it

also while you’re at it you should upgrade the transfer case with 10 friction plates

Busted a pretty new stock S3 box with 370 rwkw. 3rd gear was stripped bear.

OSG gear set with a plate. Busted a tooth off in 2nd.  Roughly 770 nm/472 kw atw.

Nismo coppermix clutch used in both setups.

Oh. Did it last long before it broke?

What trans did you end up with after that?

    • You know how your car rolled through a fence in your last jacking escapade? Scissor jacks increase the likely hood of that sort of thing happening immensely!
    • http://calfinn.com.au/product/1500kg-standard-trolley-jack-cj-2t-c/1500kg-standard-trolley-jack-cj-2t-c   I have this and fits under a S3 33 GTR with no issues. Purchased in 2009 and not one issue. It was $950 back then. Not cheap but something so important isn’t worth cheaping out on.
    • Just trying to get my head around this. At 5psi of boost, you turn on your wmi pump, and then you're using a 3000cc injector, to allow flow upto the actual engine, where you have your 6x200cc injectors and a 500cc injector. If the above is correct, what advantage are you obtaining by having the 3000cc injector blocking flow, is this just incase a line breaks between that injector and the motor you can stop flow immediately? Or are the 6x200cc and 500cc less injectors and just spray nozzle?
    • Welcome! New member myself, but I had an R33 back in 2002. Best advice I could give, based on my experience: if you're running the factory turbo, be very conservative with boost. I made the mistake of just fiddling around with the boost controller and cranking the boost for fun, and the end result was my intake pipes popping off frequently from the constant deluge of oil that was being blown into the recirc by the stressed-out turbo, which itself was siphoning oil from the engine and farting it out both sides of its centre bearing (or something to that effect). If I could do it all again, I would have gotten a new turbo and had a tune dialled in professionally and then just left it alone! Funny you mention the metal shavings in the gearbox, as I had the same thing - the probe plug (magnetic drain plug, essentially) would come out caked with shavings. At least it was doing its job. Not sure if that's just sacrificial wear and part of the deal, or if my gearbox was shagged, but I wasn't abusing it. Enjoy the R33 - they're a dying breed, and if they weren't $35k+ on CarSales in Queensland, I might have picked up one of those again, instead of the 370GT I own now (though I'm loving the 370GT, that big 3.7L V6 just hits different).
    • Howdy folks. I owned an R33 back in 2002, which was thoroughly beyond my capacity (financially speaking) to maintain/insure, so we parted ways in 2004. Fast forward 21 years (to literally yesterday, in fact) and I'm now the proud owner of a 2007 V36 370GT. I'm happily surprised by how much power the VQ37VHR makes, compared to the RB25DET, considering the latter is turbocharged. I had planned to add a turbo at some point but I'm on the fence about whether I'll even need it (though I do love the sudden onset of extra torque). Any other 370GT owners around the traps, I'd love to hear about your experiences with this car (good and bad).
