Hi all,

just wondering if I could get some feedback from those in the know.

I am currently a fairly regular attendee at sprint days and am currently pushing my R33 GTR pretty hard and am wanting to go to the next level - ie: more horsepower / side by side stuff and perhaps getting into one of the improved production classes. Rather than keep upgrading the GTR I am looking to buy and set up a dedicated race car and have a couple of options.

1. Buy a GTS (GTST), and install a GTR motor big brakes, etc. etc

2. Buy a R32 GTR and set it up specifically for the track.

I am told the better option is the GTS (with a GTR motor) due to weight, however I don't know whether or not I will miss the 4WD aspect of the GTR's.

Your comments would be appreciated. I want to do as much research before committing as I would like to be spending the money as wisely as possible.

If its improved production you want, either could be a goer but I would vote for r32. If I understand the regs properly there would be no problems with you running an rb31dett, in a much lighter car than the gtr. Of course there is a traction problem because of the narrow tyres (stock width only), thats the main down side.

However, Improved Production is extremely expensive to be competitive, not as bad as sports sedans but still pricey.

We went for Series 3E (production cars) instead because 1) you can't spend as much and 2) its the same spec for targa cars :P

But I 1000% suggest buying a seperate track car if you are even semi serious. No point wearing out a good, heavy $40,000 road car at the race track.

An Rb31DETT in an gtst would be under $20k to import and build :D

I am probably wrong but isn't a GTR built for racing.

From what I've seen an R32 GTR ate other cars for breakfast during Class A racing back in the day.

I would suggest the GTR as you can prob push harder and I'd say much more fun, plus you can see the look on the faces of others as your boost comes on hard on the main straight to take 1st. :P

Its all about the money... like others are saying. Of course the GTR would be the advantage, and I've never really seen a GTS-T do as well as a GTR.

Personally I just recently bought an R32 GTS-T with a view for setting it up with a new engine and setup for track and other fun. I could have maybe just afforded a GTR but what is the point if you can't spend much money, afraid of thrashing the pants off it, or hitting something? Kind of takes the fun out of it, when you can't do what you want to do. I suffered that frustration with my R33 gts-t, and hence why I sold it. I wouldn't be making that same mistake again on say an GTR unless I had too much money to throw around.

I just see it as getting a stock gts-t to do "x", compared to getting a stock gtr to do "x" is just as much as a challenge, and just as much fun, unless you really must have the fastest car out there...

If it is then the choice would be clearly GTR and spend a hell of dollars on it.

Then I'd argue why have the R33 GTR for the street? if its all about prestige, just go and buy a BMW or something and use the GTR for what they're for :P

I would have though you would look at purchasing a Japanese car (direct from Japan) set up for track work with all the mods already done to it. If you want it for racing then there isn’t a compliance issue, and it should be cheaper to get a car someone has already spent the R&D on.

I am not suggesting it would be ready to race straight off of the boat (I am sure it would need a freshen up - suspension and motor) but it could save a fortune on buying the parts here.

With this in mind I am guessing there are VERY limited numbers of cars like this up for sale, so you may have to take the GTSt or GTR based solely on what is available at the time.

Problem is buying a car like that from Japan may not be eligible for any class, of corse you can remove and sell the goodies...but if you have coin and sponsors then go the GTR,

Actually in VIC there is a WRX that is very competitive...outside that its a 600HP Falcon that owns the whole field provided the track isnt hard on tyres...

I was thinking about a '05 Improved Production round or two, but work isnt all that great at the moment so going OS looking for better money instead....after the Dutton of course:)

How about a Nissan S14 or S15? You can get them down to around 1100 kg. Power to weight ratio plus proper set up will give you some serious time on the track.

I've taken the GTR route and realised I should've just got a gtst and blow out whatever $ to set it up. I have to drive a little "conservative" cause the thought of rebuilding an RB26 scares the sh*t out of me.

I still say a 32 gtst over a S13/14 cause SR20's are a little pricey cause they're in demnd. RB20's are cheap as chips.

Hi guys, this subject has a large number of possible arguments. Personanly I think the killer for the GTR's is weight, for example our R32 GTST weighs 1245kgs and the R32 GTR 1558 kgs. The 25% extra weight in a GTR means that in order to go around a corner at the same speed it has to have ~25% more grip, in order to stop as well it has to have ~25% better brakes and in order to accelerate as well it has to have ~25% more power.

So if I have a GTST that has the SAME power, SAME suspension, SAME tyres and SAME brakes it will be faster than a GTR over one lap, maybe even for 2 or 3 laps. But over say 20 laps, and the higher the power output, the more the rear tyres on the GTST start to go away. That's why the GTR was, and always will be, Godzilla of the Touring Cars.:)

If I had the money I'd grab it but...not liquid right now. What is worth considering is that some major effort is required to improve the suspension on the older models. Right now I'm getting whupped by my mates in the GTR's on track days. At PI it is around the 10-11 seconds per lap. Consider that sticky tyres take off an extra 5 seconds, that's still 5-6 seconds I hope to make up with fixing my diff which is open wheeling and putting good suspension on, oh and maybe a few more kW.

The GTR setup is just so good straight away that I'm tempted to have one for a dedicated track car, but listen to the people who run race cars right now. There are advantages to both approaches.

    • At least yours have parkour down pat. One of mine will still trip over his own shadow and fall over... He's a special type of cat... Ha ha ha
    • The question then becomes - was there any fluid coming from that hole before you did the rebuild ?    You may not have noticed, of course.   Depending on how you did the rebuild, the possibility has to be considered that somehow (cleaning ?)  fluid entered that hole and is now being 'forced'  out by small movements of the proportioning valve.   From the factory, there's actually a small rubber plug in that hole but with age and under-bonnet heat it's quite common for it to 'go missing'.  That rubber plug is designed to allow the venting process but also to prevent 'stuff' getting to the area (prevent corrosion, etc).   The plug is also not available as a spare part AFAIA. Personally I wouldn't race and buy a new master just yet but keep an eye on the area to see if the 'leak' continues.   If you're concerned about brake fluid damaging nearby paintwork, cable tie a piece of suitable absorbant material over the hole and remove/monitor occasionally.    Operation of the proportioning valve and the brake master itself won't be affected, but also keep an eye on brake fluid level, of course. In terms of a new master, the genuine part is getting expensive, unfortunately.  Amayama is showing AUD900+.   I was searching recently and there's an aftermarket part available from Japan made by 'Parts Assist': https://zenmarket.jp/en/yahoo.aspx?q=BNR32%2bBM50&p=1 Whether it's any good I have no idea, although in my experience Japanese aftermarket stuff is pretty good quality-wise.   The above site allows overseas buyers to purchase stuff more easily from Japan but there are fees and shipping costs, of course.   The original Japanese seller page is here: https://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/p1197401228 Copper/Nickel is fine but I still prefer bundy tube and it's also cheaper.
