FU$K!

I just spoke to Kiwi and you are right, but it's worse than you knew. Not only is the free interstate transport dead and gone, but Kiwi have increased their freight charges to Aus effective from 18 December loading of Prince no 1. It goes from $65 USD per cubic metre to $72 USD!! plus you now have to pay $150 for interstate freight. *** I'm so mad my blood is boiling.

:werd:

But what can you do?

Ship with NYK before they decide to charge you wharf fees? I'll see what Geoff R says. I fail to see the point in paying more for your car to go to the wrong city. I'm in the same boat as you Richard, and won't be in the state at the time, so there's no rush...?

Mark

The only reason why im goin through kiwi carriers is they had an opening on there boat and it was the only space left for a few weeks, im just keen to get my car here and i dont really care paying a little extra, i also herd that all carriers are starting to charge when carrying interstate.

$250 is not much in the grand scheme of things. Just hope that parts aren't stolen from the car or that it doesn't suffer any damage. I can't really complain aboiut Kiwi, and like was said above, they do offer insurance against theft and damage. I am still in the process of making a claim on mine. Although, I don't really need the ECU or afms that they stole, and the car was going to eventually get a respray. :P

how bad was your car damaged, also are KIWI carriers goin to pay you. how long has it taken for them to organise your claim,

front bar and rear 1/4 got scraped, front guard has a small 5cm ding, rear lip spoiler is broken. Not sure on the claim, my importer is taking care of it. The claim is delayed due to the wait for quotes.

We haven't assertained exactly when the damage and theft occurred. It sat at customs storage in Brisbane for 6 months before going to Sydney Bond Storage for a week. SBS claim that the car wasn't touched by them when I went to pick it up. Enquiries are continuing, hence the further delay in the claim.

Yeah, I'd be interested to hear what Geoff advises. I won't even be in the country when mine arrives (in Japan of all places) so I was looking forward to having kiwi deliver the car direct to my door so that it could be safeyl in my garage until I return. Now I'll have to arrange to get it from Greenacre to my place without me being there to take care of things. oh well.

Richard

From Geoff yesterday:

Rate increase will only add perhaps $170. Rebate from Kiwi of $250 on transport to other States.

NYK, no guarantees on shipping timeframe, could be no space for several months. Daily wharf storage charges of $5 per day while waiting.

Kiwi is the only viable option.

I don't know anything about the rebate mentioned and have asked for confirmation that it still exists.

*sigh* If only the car was more expensive....sounds stupid, but then the costs are proportionally less and I wouldn't care as much. I feel for the guys still importing S13's.

Richard I'm looking forward to six months from now when all this is history, and I will not be browsing the Importation Forum!

Geoff's reply arrived:

This is an excerpt from a Kiwi document titled "To all Shippers and Consignees"

INTER-STATE TRANSPORT:

Please note that as from the mid December sailing from Japan, there will no longer be a transport subsidy applied to vehicles consigned to Australian Inter-State destinations. All vehicles will be manifested as having Brisbane as the discharge and final destination Port. This will also be noted on the Bill of lading.

KIWI will however apply an Inter-State freight rebate of AUD$250.00 to all vehicles that have a Consignee address in either Sydney, Melbourne or Adelaide (inner cargo or piggy back units do not separately qualify). This rebate will be paid on production of a paid transport company invoice (providing details that match the original manifest for that voyage e.g VIN number - B/L number - original voyage number). This claim should be made within 2 months of vehicle arrival in Brisbane.

Cool.

Sorry Mark,

I should have mentioned that I spoke to kiwi direct yesterday. The cost increas is around $250 AUD not $170. Yes you get a $250 rebate on the frieght, BUT the interstate freight costs $400, AND you still have to transport it from their depot to were you want the car (another ~$100 so really $350 increase).

Basically it's like this:

increased tariff from $65USD per cbm to $72USD per cbm = $100 extra AUD approx

no instertate transport is now $400 AUD - $250 rebate = $150

tow from depot to your door is at least $100

total increase in price shipping with kiwi now as opposed to kiwi up 'till this point = ~$350+

bummer.

i know your not happy richard...but aussie $ is about .77us ATM..which freight is calculated on....$0.80 is about the best it gets...cost is still cheaper than aussie $ @.56 which it hit not to long ago...just as 6 high roof delica`s i had bought left..20cu meters each ....freight was 3 grand more than planned

That does make me feel better! You're right, these are the risks we take importing. no point whingeing. It is tough though when you're ship is the first one to have this take effect!

Anyway, bring on teh car I say! :D

    • Nah. Was just wondering if you were having a small stroke or if there was some slur/gaf/inside joke that I wasn't aware of.
    • That was a fark up, it's Salamanca Place I was thinking of. And now I'm curious as to what potential slur/gaf I have caused with Salamander Road, ha ha!
    • Actually everyone on the roads was really well behaved. The only person that did any minor tailgating was a local hoon in a Turbo Focus. Unfortunately we weren't going the same way so there was no grand initial D touge battle. Lots of people pulled over and let me through. The amount of "Hey man nice car, omg skyline, nice 34 man woo" was suprising. Like really suprising. Like almost annoying. My partner was obviously surprised, she'd never seen anyone in the real world point out the car/like the car/want to chat about the car before, so to have like 3 people per day mention it was notable, I could finally say SEE? SOMEONE THINKS THEY'RE COOL. Everyone was also pretty suprised about the weather. Every day was dry and about ~13-14C. Mount Wellington had a sign that said they close the gates at 9pm and I was heading up there at about ~7:30. It was VERY apparent that conditions were getting significantly worse by the minute on the way up and down. The road on the mountain was terrible though, it's no driving road. I have various suspension related questions now. Luckily it was only about 20 minutes from where we were staying to the top of the mountain as said Google maps. We only had the 2 nights in Hobart. We went to the Farm Gate Market though which was really good - And went down to the Hastings Thermal springs/caves down there during the day. I'd definitely be up for going back again, so luckily there's a few more sights yet to see. Didn't get to do the west coast/queenstown/cradle mountain so this was supposed to be a 'scouting' trip anyway of sorts if I were to one day do/take part in/organize a more car-focused trip. As for the boat, it wasn't bad. Well it was bad, but not in the way you're thinking. We did the night trip which leaves at 6:45 (though you have to be there ~2 hours earlier) and arrives the next morning at about 6am. There is nothing to do on the ship. If you plan accordingly and bring a book/tablet/show to watch/charger you can just chill out, take some Travacalm and just sleep through it. The food there is an extremely basic buffet that costs $32 a plate, or $14 for a $3 pizza. The way back we had a travel kettle and a few different types of cup noodles and made our own tea/coffee in the room. This was a far superior way to do it. At the very least book one of the rooms with beds. I guess as we were in the off season we didn't have room mates. You get an option for rooms with 4 beds (2x bunks) or a room with just the two bottom beds. There's also some option for a deluxe queen bed but it's much pricer. We've been on sleeper trains in Asia before so we figured this is similar (and it was)
    • You just gotta be really, really, really clear and decisive with what you want your end product to be. 99% of people who want this conversion aren't "I want to run a 295 front tyre!" so they don't really need the widebody. They just want the OEM body to look a little less dumpy, so bonnet, bar, skirts job done with some camber, stretch, slam. It's when you want that, but then decide to pivot later you get big problems. See also if you're willing to get an all in one fibreglass bar, and you're willing to accept fibreglass problems like cracking the entire item on a driveway, instead of just a piece attached to the bottom, etc etc etc. Decide this all before buyin'.
