update on mine

since i blew the 20 box some 3 months ago i pushed the car to the side and did things slowly, its now up and running again with the 25 box and 1 peice shaft.

took it down for a run on moday night at the motorplex, it ran 12.077 @119.5mph!! only bummer was the 2.0 60ftr

the street E/T tyres are a hard tyre to get used too, i either bogged down or wheel spun. as the track isnt preped for the off street meets i was wheelspining all the way through first gear which on a prepd track it'll spin but grip up almost instantly.

the motor is still tottaly unopened and today i put it back on the dyno just to see where its at, it pulled a very respectable 390.5 hp @25psi

LOL...that is so awesome. Can i ask where the boost is being measured from, turbo outlet or in the inlet manifold? Also, what does your tuner think abotu you being able to make that much power at that much boost? Does he think the large exhaust housing makes the difference to it actually flowing at those revs/boost? I have the baby 8cm housing and i doubt that i could make that much power, and dont think i can get that much more air through the dicky little exhaust housing.

But all these questions means im keen to give it a try at the drags. I would love to run 23-24psi and see if i can get into the low 12s :) Your mph is damn good and your ET great considering your 60ft time :(

i'm glad he's getting the mph down the track too, WA is constantly critisised for having high reading dynos, good to see that he's backing up the hp numbers with some good times

i think the problem is there's too many dyno queens over here and not enough people hitting the track and backing it up

though admittedly it is getting better

haha I knew youd be impressed Roy :P

we get the pressure reading from the fuel reg, i've actualy been ubber slack and havent even fitted a boost gauge in the car yet haha (i rely on the profec b)

the rear housing obviously plays a big part in it, the shop i ran it up on yesterday have actauly been fitting the 8cm kits on rb25s and need to run 16-18psi to see around 360hp-atw on a safe tune. but its a generic kit..

and like Trav said when i pulled the 405hp @26psi i copped a fair bit a slack by a few people, but now the mph is there to back it up its only a matter of more practice on the launch to go into the 11's.

Hmmm...i need bigger injectors if i am to run any more boost. But i doubt i will get much more power if i wind another 4 or 5 psi in there. I wouldnt dare run that boost at the track, but at the drag strip i may give it a go...but injectors are so famn expensive :D

4 years ago i paid $1100 for mine. These now seem cheap to me :P

wow adam thats pretty impressive. no progress on mine this week working flat out 13 hour shifts 7 days a week.just gota make my exhaust housing 3 bolt flange then weld the exhaust together, put in my fixed seat an gauges then tune time. had to make my own oil feed fitting for it to no one in bunbury had anything that would fit

You are right...but the way i see it. Thats $800 to allow me to run more boost and most likely pop the motor, so cant bring myself to spend the money...then there is the case of "what money" do i have to spend :D

Just out of curiousity can you compensate (slightly) for running a smaller rear housing by running a very large external gate, I'm sure it would be harder to control boost but would it help free up the top end a little in say your example?

You can make the gate as bug as you want. it doesnt change the fact that to make the power you need to flow a lot of air through the exhaust housing...and consider this, the scroll of the 8cm housign isnt exactly big, at its smallest cross sectional area it probably is as small as a 5c piece. :worship:

Yeah I was surprised how small it was when I picked it up.....

roy i had no idea you were an attractive blonde!

haha good article none the less

yeah, i'm surprised that they didn't even include 1 pic of your ugly mug

But plently of pics of the 32 and a pretty big story spanning 5 pages - ya gotta be happy with that :domokun:

you're famous! :(

Well heres my latest demoralising update. Went to an NDSOC drag day a few weeks back in search of my elusive 12 second pass.

Before the day I got a straight through exhaust system fitted up. Sounded like a lancer at idle but unreal at high revs.

Put it on a dyno a few days before and got 170rwkw at 6-7psi and 260rwkw at 19-20psi all in at 3800rpm.

Loaded car on trailer and brought a set of brand spankers e/t streets with me to bolt on when I was up there. My mate is starting up a website and wanted footage so he spent the best part of an hour setting up the in car camera.

Finally get out to stage and run down the track off the spring taking it easy to get all the fluids up to temp. Come back and all is good so I decide to have a run with the boost up on the street tyres before bolting on the M/T's.

Get put in the water and let her rip for the burnout. It decides to start axle tramping like crazy and instead of getting out of it I push the pedal down harder thinking it will come good and start spinning nicely. High hopes it seems as instead of spinning clean it decided to spin the uni joint off the tailshaft where it meets the gearbox.

So back on the trailer where its still sitting with dust and bird shit all over it, the c@nt of a thing.

But alas, I WILL run a 12 second pass on an RB20 with factory turbo and cooler sans gas.

yeah, i'm surprised that they didn't even include 1 pic of your ugly mug :)

What mag is this? Is it some article on rb20s? sounds like a good read...

So, not to get too far from the topic... I have some questions. First, I'm seeing lots of you guys making the mid 200rwkw... let's take 250 for example... that equates to about 335rwhp. That is a good healthy amount. I also read that the RB20 block can take up to 400hp. Some of you guys have done mods but dont list them all... have any of you guys done over-sized pistons?

Reason I ask this is because I'm in the middle of a debate with a shop owner, who owns a R32 RB20DET while I have a Gazelle that has a RB20DET swapped into it. I have read these forums countless times and esp. this thread. We both agree you need bigger injectors, cams, cam gears and a larger turbo coupled with some form of a standalone or ECU management. The only thing we differ on is that he says I will need over-sized pistons... if not, then I'll need a new block soon after due to the limitations of the stock block. But I dont see anyone doing this.

I am planning to get 300rwhp or 223.88rwkw. It's not quite up with you guys in this thread... but decently good. The following are the mods I have:

RB20DET

Plazmaman intake

stainless steel high mount exhaust mani

t3/t4 (sorry... I bought it and it just came into the shop.. forgot the trim size and all... but power is well enough for 300)

555cc Tomei injectors

JGY Customs RB20DET fuel rail

Sard Type R fuel regulator

Tomei cam gears (256/8.5mm)

Cam gears

HKS SSQV

FMIC

Exhaust (2.5in from turbo the goes to 3in when there's space... right below driver/passenger), no cat

Splitfire coilpacks

GReddy Emanage Ult. using Map sensor

The question is, will I need over-sized pistons? I know location and environment plays a large factor, but theoretically, will I be able to achieve my goal? I'll be posting up my results here in the next couple of months.

So anyway, this sort of fits with my mods and what I'm hoping for part of this thread. :)

No.

plenty of guys are making 250kw on stock bottom ends, theoretically the rb20 is the strongest of all the RB's.

i would never spend anything on an rb20 bottom end, i mean its much more cost effective to do a conversion to a RB25 or 26.

the workshop just wants more money out of you, simple as that.

Its even cheaper to just get another RB20 from the wreckers :D

    • Apologies for the long post, but needed somewhere to lay out the entire timeline of events and actions taken:   I've got an 89 GTR with a R34 RB in it. It's been running great all year, driven probably 500KM in the last month. It's not my daily driver, just a weekend fun car.    Build info: R34 RB26 - HKS 2.7 stroker kit, HKS adjustable cam gears, HKS turbo upgrades, Trust intercooler, R34 factory DENSO 440cc injectors, JUN chipped/tuned R32 ECU. All of this work was performed in Japan back in 2019.    Thursday 10/2/25 - It's a nice day and decided I'll drive it to work, I start it up in the garage and I notice it took a few extra cranks and sounded a bit funny. I figure maybe it was just because it was a pretty chilly morning. I pull it out into the driveway to warm up a bit before leaving. As I leave the driveway, it feels very off and sounds like a misfire. I pull it back in the garage to deal with after work and take the daily to work. I was able to diagnose it as a cylinder 5 misfire with the old spark plug test (unplugging each plug until a sound change with the engine running). I take off the whole ignition system, ignitor, plugs, spark. *Important note, it is still on the R32 ignition system with the separate ignitor system. I test each system with a multi-meter and nothing presents as a smoking gun. I put it all back together and it starts up no issue. I go ahead and order the PRP R35 ignition conversion kit. It should arrive today (10/13/25)   Friday 10/3/25 - Another nice day, car starts up great and drives great all day. Very pleased that everything seems to be OK   Sunday 10/5/25 - Decided I'll take it to play some golf, load up and drive to the course about 25 minutes away. Drives wonderful the whole way there, I pull in the parking lot and the engine completely comes to a stop. I do not recall if it sputtered at all, but just remember all of the sudden the engine was off. I roll it into a parking spot, try to crank it back on and nothing.  It'll crank and crank and not even try to start. End up getting it towed back to my house and push it up into the garage.    Items I have checked: Fuel in the tank Fuel Pump relay Fuel pump fuse  Spark Plugs & gap Coil packs Ignitor    I know the cylinders are getting fuel as the plugs smell like fuel after a start attempt. I tried spraying starter fluid into the manifold and cranking and not even a sputter.    I decided to do the live CAS test (removing the the CAS, ignition on and spinning the CAS stalk to see if the injectors pulse and spark is active). All of the injectors were pulsing and I have spark at the plug. The half-moon end of the CAS did seem very loose, I'm not sure how much play is supposed to be there, but it was more than I expected. There was no in/out play of the shaft, just the tip end that is pinned on had quite a bit of play.    CAS Play video   When I put the CAS back in, I stupidly did not re-time the engine. I know I need to do that tonight, however, I do not think it will start given it seemingly was not the issue. My plan is to do the PRP R35 coil kit and retime the engine at the same time.    I plan on ordering the Haltech Nexus Plug-in ECU once they are available again, but ideally would like to get this sorted before firing the parts cannon at it and potentially adding more variables.    Anything glaring that I am missing here, I'm a bit at a loss?
    • Get it on a dyno. Get something logging Consult. Run it up and find out what is causing it.
    • Looking for a plenum for rb25 de+t neo  Not looking to push much power maybe 300kw at the wheels, is there much difference in flow for Freddy “Greddy style” compared to original Greddy or options like Proflow or Otaku garage?    I won’t be porting the de Neo head for now as I think it’ll be fine 280-300rwkw but appreciate the help and any experiences anyone has between them and any advice. Thanks  Looking at this plenum for now below
