Thought i would dig up an old thread.

Got my r33 tuned with a r34 smic and hit 210rwkw (11psi) b4 my afm maxed out (i have a gt3040 and dr drift remap). I just bout some injectors and a z32 and going to get it dynoed again. I'm not sure how far it will go but will be interesting to see how it goes at around 14psi.

Its still fairly cool in melbourne so i wonder what it will be like in summer. I was thinking of bolting a small thermo fan on the back and just leave it running (only draw 3.5 amps) May not do much but has to be better than nothing when sitting at the lights.

I probably wouldnt bother doing this if i was using it for track work but my car is daily driven. I might give it a little for 2 gears and then back off so i cant see it suffering too much from heat soak but time will tell. As i'm using a remapped ecu i'm guessing it should knock back the timing if it pings (anyone confirm)??

Anyway i will hopefully give this all a go some time next week.

Thanks for the info' James... I have a S2 stagea which comes standard with the R34 smic and I wanted to know if I could get near 200kw on the standard smic... that's the first info' I've been able to find from someone actually doing it.

The 210rwkw was done fairky easy with the smic but maybe it was because of the different turbo making that power at a lower boost level (around 11psi) thus less heat.

Anyway i will just see how it goes. If the tuner says not to go over a certain psi then i wont. I'm using it cause i got it off ebay for $50 delivered (mint condition) and also have a thermo fan just sitting in the shed. I also have a different front bumper that allows a lot of air flow and i didnt use the black ducting.

Good to hear. I managed to find a Trust SMIC which is a little larger then the R34GTT one and I have no problems at 10.5 psi and 155 AWKW but I am saving up for a new turbo and aiming for at least 200AWKW at about 1 bar and hoping to keep the SMIC.

I don't know how good remapped ecu's are at adapting to different configurations - some need to be rechipped although allegedly some are tunable but i haven't been able to pin that down. I have an Apexi SITC to adjust the timing across the range.

As posted at the begining these are great little budget performers for modest power levels.

You will find that if you aren't doing sustained amounts oth thrashing the smic will be fine for road duties and even a little track time at the drags.

The location of the smic is good for static traffic situations and helps with heat soak.

A quality front mount intercooler will start to offer some value on this turbo as the power starts climbing over 230rwkw. This turbo has the legs to do it so keep it in mind. :closedeyes:

^^^ I can see myself getting a front mount in the future as i have seeen the potential with this turbo from the previous owner. I thought i would just give this ago.....see what happens and post it up on here for other to see.

On the dyno we will wind it up to its limmits and then back it off to be safe. I want to get the thermo fan on it b4 i go as it should help with continuous runs on the dyno. Last time it was on the dyno i put my hand where the SMIC was and felt hardly any airflow. My only problem is i HATE wiring things up!!! I know its not hard but its my pet hate :cool:

I hooked up a 9 inch thermo fan to the SMIC yesterday. If i would do it again i would use a 7 inch fan as this one overlaps slightly but still seems to push a lot of air. I wanted to mount it on the back of the SMIC but the mounting brackets got in the way so its at the front pushing air through. I happend to find the wire for the factory fog lights right next to the cooler. The fan only draws 3.5 amps so the factory wiring is fine and i have a switch and relay already there!!!! Because of the low power usage i ahve just been leaving the fan on while driving. Not sure of the difference it makes as only running 200rwkw and the cooler pipes always feel cool to touch anyway but i'm sure it has to make a difference.

THe r34 smic is quite thick and even with the fan it takes a lot of effort to force air through it so i cant see how it works in its factory position in traffic. I used the padding from the factory duct to seal the fan better and it made a big difference with how much air is actually forced through the entire cooler rather than just blown over the front.

Anyway i spoke to my tuner and his dyno is having troubles so i might not be able to get it dynoed b4 i go back to work. I recomend mounting a fan as its cheap, easy and seems to draw a lot of air through the cooler. I have seen the same fan on ebay for $27....so not exactly expensive.

Do you have an form of electronic boost controller? If you have one , such as the Jaycar IEBC you could take a feed from the solenoid so that the fan only comes on when you are on boost. Or alternatively you could peobably get a cheap pressure switch).

When I got my dyno run I asked the operator to direct some of the cooling fan towards the SMIC but they didn't do that. Not a real problem as it was just a 30 second power measurement but if I was getting tuning done on the dyno I would try to make sure the operator understood what was being asked and get some cooling air through the SMIC.

Got my injectors and z32 put in yesterday along with a tune. First off it made 235rwkw on 16psi but after a couple of runs it started to get heat soak and ping. Tuner wound it down to 14psi and still problems up top so had to retard timing a lot after around 5500rpm. I have gained around 25rwkw in the midrange but top end has still only got around 210kw.

The car did seem not right as we previously made 210 on 2psi less boost with a lot more timing. I'm not sure if something else is wrong or if i got some bad fuel. I will be upgrading to a front mount soon. It was aa little warmer yesterday but nothing compared to summer.

Extended dyno run is extreme use for SMIC a well ducted one on the road will get a lot more air through it. While max KW is of interest take a 80 to 120 km/hr time at each stag of tune to see actual improvement in performance. What kind and size are your new injectors?

^^^My new injectors are 555cc. Yes i'm not that concerned with the max power as i gained a lot through the midrange but it feels funny when i rev it and it pulls hard and then at around 6k it just revs with no gain. Starting to lose traction now in second at around 4k (265 rear tyres) so i will need to concentrate on the rear end soon.

I would have thought my thermo fan would have done a better job but yesterday proved otherwise. What i did notice was the bottom half of the SMIC was cooler than the top. Might have worked better with a shroud but i cant be bothered. I'm looking at around 260rwkw pretty soon, so a front mount is my only option. My r34 SMIC will be for sale soon so let me know if your keen!!

The first run where we hit 235rwkw it did not knock at all. When it did start he backed off timing and kept knocking, backed off boost and kept knocking so took it down to 14psi and took more timing off. This tune is a safe compromise as its great midrange and dies off early. I could have knocked it down to 11psi and made the same top end figure but lost in the middle.

Can anyone tell me if having a lot of timing taken off in the top end is doing any damage??? I have started to just shift early and use all my mid range......still fun to drive!

The retarded ignition up high will increase exhaust temps, may do damage if you sustain high rpm or track work as advised when you were here. I'd suggest changing before 6000rpm and you'll be safe, you've got plenty of midrange now, just wait till we get some better cooling and wind it up! As for the 34 SMIC I would suggest they'd be a lot better with ducting etc, but no difference on dyno to road as a lot of people suggested, I've got the larger fan available with the dyno, and this was directed directly as your smic.

I'm pulling the HKS FMIC off tomorrow for you :D

I fit a front mount so the smic is now for sale (look in sale section)

There is a noticable amount of lag now (doesnt ramp up as quick) so unless your aiming for over 200rwkw i would stay with the side mount.

I'd suggest it would be flowing more (less ignition) combined with the retarded ignition from the old map to prevent detonation, I would be worried if it didn't feel less responsive, would suggest the cooler is in deed flowing a lot better!

Can't wait to re-tune it for back to back comparrison.

There is no doubt it will flow and cool better but initial response will have to be effected (just look at the bigger core and more piping that has to be filled). At 200rwkw the smic was fine and did a great job so i dont see how a front mount for daily driving is needed (in cold melb). I will comment after retune though, as i like to be optimistic.

I'm not sure what is left to do after this as i should be seeing the limits of my turbo after the next tune

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways. 
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.

    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
