5th gear at 60, thats what, about 1000 rpm, thats pretty harsh on the box, on and off all the time, feel that clunky feeling in the stick, thats bad. 5th should really be used at over 80kmh. Plus u might need to put a bit of power down on the spot for an overtake or lane change and u cant do that at 1000rpm.

5th gear in a r32 with a r33 gearbox is roughly 2000 rpm.

This is with a rb30det as well......would that be too low to cruise at?

(the extra torque the motor has i can come out of a corner in 3rd doing roughly 1500 rpm and the rb20 turbo is already at full boost btw)

meh i change just after 60km, went it goes into 5th gear the revs are around 2000rpm, i cant see why it would damage/hurt gearbox if u shit below 2000rpm, if that is ture then pushing the car too 7100rpm and then shifting faster than average into another gear cant be good too :)

about 180km/h, 250m before turn 1 usually.

Yeah, 1000rpm is really too low, you shouldn't really be under about 1500, but you will hear easily if the engine is "labouring", its pretyt hard to pick pinging in a skyline tho

The guy I had driver training with once told me that between 2000-3000 rpm the car is "happy"

I re-evaluated that slightly when I got the r33.

normally I cruise round town (50-70kmh zones) in 4th, and only use 5th if I'm in a higher speed zone.

But I think the car could even handle cruising at 60 in 3rd really.

my daily driving shift points are 60kmh to 4th then about 90kmh to 5th... just the way i've always done it... that way i have some torque there if i should want to call on it :)

this is true, i hate it when im in 5th at like 2000rpm's and need to punch it to overtake or something

Yeh I'll shift_ *super lame Nissan bump right there, lol* into 5th at 80km... General 60km/h driving 4th... Sydney 60km/h driving 3rd... much more responsive for dodging the f#ct up traffic there. Constantly even shifting down to 2nd to quickly get past huge trucks about to squish up my car on outer lane. Dam I hate syd driving.

I don't bother doing the dogde left and right when city (sydney) driving.

It's more about knowing which lane to be in.

Anyway, i cruise along at 60-65 in 5th all the time.

4th when going up the little hills though and maybe an obvius overtake.

I love seeing other poeple jumpin left and right all over the place, punchung it off and on again.

Then i cruise along at about 40 and pass em just cause i know which lane will be better.

Hehe

i hate the feel of the car under-revin in 5th gear...like tryin to ride a mule up a hill. the only time i ever use 5th is 85-90 plus. id rather cruise in 4th gear at 3000rmp around 80km which is the max speed limits here anyways excluding hwy driving of course. you dont even stay at 80 for a prolong period of time before you hit traffic or lights. ill only whack it into 5th if the roads long enough or when traffic permits which is not very often. theres no way id cruise in 5th at 60 though, car drives like a dog and theres no power or response when a tricky situation arises.

Yeah im with everyone else, i switch to 5th at 80Km/h, 4th is at 60Km/h. But like going up a hill, i prefer to hit a lower gear becasue when u gun it in 5th, 1: it doesnt move, and 2: Boost goes on more...

    • I'll probably be putting the shit box back on the dyno again soon, I want to dial in the closed loop boost control properly. I'll have a camera facing the car/motor for fun too. Just note, there are essentially 3x 10AN inlets going into the catch can and 1x going back to the intake pipe. Most of the time the catch can "return" to the sump actually is the crank case breather, pushing air out.
    • I have the R3C with a Nismo slave and by no means does it behave like a stocker, it ain’t THAT bad. On take off just give a bit more throttle than you would say a coppermix and it’s fine. It will not slip though.
    • Okay. Final round of testing done. Got a friend to hook up a fancy scanner to the car and we also ran some compression and leakdown tests, she is healthy.  The MAF was definitely the culprit. So for future reference anyone with similar issues that find this thread. I suggest the following steps, in order of affordability:   Check your spark plugs for any fouling, replace plugs if they are bad or re adjust the gaps making it narrower (0.8mm would be good). Check every coil's resistance with a multimeter. It can be done by probing the IB and G pins on the coil pack. Resistance should be around 1.4 (+/- 0.1) Ohms Check the MAF. If you have Nissan connect or a good scanner with the 14 adapter it should allow you to see the voltage on the MAF reading should be around 1.1 - 1.2V when car is idling. But if you don't, buy a new MAF from Amazon and test, then return it. (For instance, I got a Chinese one for $40 that was reporting 1.3v on idle). If you still have scanner, you can run tests on the injectors to see if they are working, just remember to unplug the fuel pump fuse/relay and have no pressure on the line. Then listen for the noises that the injectors make. Clean/replace injectors as needed. Once you find the issue and fix, order thousands of dollars worth of OEM parts to refresh unrelated things (Optional)   PS: Thanks to the absolute legends of this forum for the responses and help to someone that went a bit over their head.
