The RS's are great but the treat wear is higher and will last half the life of the SS's, personally I would go for the SS's, you can get almost 2 sets for the same money and they will last a lot longer, and I know that the SS's stick really well on the road normally, but it is up to you, the RS's do look "HORN" on almost anything performance.

Have'nt driven the GTR for a while now as the Steel belts are hanging out on the rear, so finally rang around a few tyre places today.

I like the idea of Federals 595 range, but still unsure which way to go for my car which probably will see 5000kms per year including maybe 4 competitive track events.

595-ss Treadwear 240

245/40/18 = $255 ($1020)

265/35/18 = $320 ($1280)

595-rs Treadwear 180

265/35/18 = $470 ($1880)

I have approval from the Mrs to go for the 595-rs's, after some....urm...discussion! and they would look horn, but are they worth it for a handfull of competive events, or would the 595-ss's be 90% as good for 50% of the money?

What do you guys reckon...?

which tyre you choose comes down to how competitive you want to be at those track days. The 595RS is not as soft as other semi-slicks which generally have treadwear of 60 or less, so they are designed for those who want to do a few track days and a bit of street driving without the expense of buying a second set of wheels/tyres for the track.

I am very impressed with the grip of the 595SS tyres, and I've used them at Lakeside recently, where I expected they would be found lacking, but they were surprisingly good at 9/10ths and up to 15 consecutive laps, and I'm using them this weekend on the QLD Challenge road rally (like a Dutton style event) so we'll see how they go in the results! All the serious competitors use proper semi-slicks, but I expect to still be up there in the results on the 595SS. No doubt the RS would be faster and more consistent with its softer compound, stronger construction and larger tread blocks. if you can wait till the results from the QLD Challenge come in next week, where I'll be up against a bunch of modified WRX's and STi's on semi-slicks, as well as a bunch of rally cars and other fast club racers, it will be an interesting comparison...

hrd-hr30: As with any competitive driver I want to win everything I enter....as soon as someone mentions 'Stopwatch or Timing' the 'red mist' decends!! :P

But I cannot warrant the reletively big budget (even at Club level) required to have a truely competitive car (spare rims with comp Rs, suspension and Brake upgrades / tweaks etc)

So far I have never had a car with anything like good tyres, infact i have 'never' actually bought brand new tyres for any of my performance cars in the past!...yet have still managed to win or place high in recent track days / Hillclimbs etc

So even the 595-SS's would be far better than anything I have had prior

I would be very interested to see how you get on and rate the 595-SS's, make sure you post results or PM me please :)

Cheers

Dry: 9/10

Wet 7/10

Value: best in class, but how do you score good value at 2k a set??

Got a good price from Owen tyres at Brookvale Sydney for a set of 265/35/18's

Still no change from 2k though... :)

These tyres have even more road noise than the Dunlop DJ01's I used to run on my 17's. Not sure if thats entirely due to reduced profile or not. Also give them a couple of minute to warm up cause they're a bit skatey when cold.

In the dry they are awesome! Wet isn't to bad either considering.

Contact them and they will be able to give you the name and number of a federal dealer in your area.

Sorry for the double post, but this is not on the same lines as my last post, I am looking to see if anyone has ran 245 45 R 18's on there cars and what brands and how did they perform, Im looking at a new car and they run this size as factory fitment, and I was trying to find out what brands in this size you have used, and how many k's they have done and what price you paid for them.

hey all best tyres i would have to say would be yokohama advan the best tyre in the wet and dry also there semi slicks are good too but they do get pricey but i guess u pay for what you get also falken semi slicks perform well too great in the dry and surprisingly not too bad in the wet 255/40/17 $290 a tyre but then again if thats too pricey you can always go for federals they are great value for money and now also available are federal semi slicks too

yoko advans 255/40/17

wet: 7/10

dry: 9/10

value: 6/10 $450

yoko semi slicks 265/4017

wet: 5/10

dry: 10/10

value: 7/10 not cheap but perform well $750

falken azenis semi slick 255/40/17

wet: 6/10 pretty impresive

dry: 7/10

value: 8/10 $290 pretty damn good and lasted me a good 8mths

federals 235/45/17

wet: 5/10

dry: 8/10

value: 8/10 $185

well after finally deciding upon the recommended federal 595 SS tyres, i called a few local prices (tweed heads)

to my suprise, for the size on my car 255/35/r18 the prices ranged from

$302 per tyre, $280 per tyre, down to $216 per tyre

i have no idea were the first mob came up with $302, as none of the places stock them, all need to be ordered from brissy, needless to say option 3 was a winner, anyway called back and then they went to roder them, but no 255's in stock at all, no idea when next load is coming.. so decided upon 265's (9 inch rim, rather go 265s then 245) anyway price was still only $248 per tyre, this is alot lower then everyone saying $320ish.

i braced myself before calling for a higher prices (not being major city such as brisbane, sydney etc).

but pleasently suprised..

that is all, i thought i would mention this, as it seems odly low, i even doubled checked the size and model on the phone.

Just bought a set of Falken FK 452's. 2x 235/45/17 and 2 x 255/40/17's

They are very good. Together with a good wheel alignment my car feels toatally different to drive. Excellent grip considering my diff is worn. Had ZE-326's before these and my car was constantly single wheeling on power and now it takes much more to get it spinning the wheels.

Can't comment on the wet yet.

This is on a lightly modded R33 gtst by the way.

I second the Falken FK-452s. Bought a set in 18s 235/40 and 265/35 3 weeks ago. Has tempted me to take corners a lot more confidently...awesome value too...$1100 fitted!

Yeah the Federal SS's in the 265 R 18's are normally based at Retail Price around the $250 a tyre mark, and even at that retail price, the tyre joints are still making good coin, so i have no idea where that first place got his prive of $320 a tyre for 255's, I think they doubled purchase price to get that sale price.. scammers.

You will also find that the closer you get to the middle of a city the lower the price will get too, if you are in the middle of nowhere you will pay top dollar for them cos they are a specialty item, where as the city stores tend to stock them cos they see more cars that run them, so when price huinting, call an area that has a fairly dense residentual area near by and a few tyre joints close, that way you know you are getting the best prices they can do to beable to compete, also some times doesnt hurt to throw in, oh a mate of mine got the same size down the road for $10 less, i thought it was on the same brand too, normally they will say yeah listen I will match ya half way, and you can normally squeeze $5 - $10 more out of them.

D...

PSI_GTSII, I think you'll be happy with them. We just got results from the QLD Challenge - we were 3rd outright in Speed classification on the 595SS, with everyone else up the pointy end on semi-slicks. We made a bit of a mistake on one of the stages too, out on the grass/dirt on the outside of a hairpin, which would have cost a few seconds, and considering we were 2 seconds behind 2nd place that looks like it cost us a place. I'm pretty happy with the results for normal road tyres.

altho ive had my tyres for all of 2days and there not warn in, i could definatly feel the difference between these and the cracked old jap spec bridgestones i had on it, the car just feels alot more solid on the road. but meh, will update in a few weeks

has anyone heard of a tyre brand called Nexen or something???

Yes, and cheap, sorry dont have much else to say about nexen, they are a bit like Clear Tyres, and Sava's.. Be alright for just slow city driving, but if ya plan on doing anything where you need grip, look else where for a tyre.

emmmm, see i can get 275 35 R18 all around, and i dont think i will have much traction issues even with nexen....

for the same price, i can get 225 all around from bridgestone, and then i would have problems with traction.......

Bridgestone SO3. 255/17 rear and 235/17 front.

Approx 450-490 per corner.

I have run bridgestones right back since the SO1's thru to SO2's.

I run the full Whiteline Suspension Works Pack and its a brilliant combo.

They last me two years per set, driven hard and daily, never failed.

I Rotate them evry 6 months.

I also run them on my stock R33 Sedan.

Brilliant

:D

I run the full SK suspension package, with the S03s. Couldnt agree more, the amount of grip is amazing, these tyres are worth every cent :(

Just bought some buddy club rims..

It has advan Ad07s on them.. 255 rears, 235 fronts..

Anyways these rubber handle quite well when the temps are up... Im really happy with these. However i have not pushed it to the limit yet, but overall traction is awesome!!

Have researched these on the net, and they claim to be more suited for the dry and race conditions. Expensive tyres tho..

    • Nah. Was just wondering if you were having a small stroke or if there was some slur/gaf/inside joke that I wasn't aware of.
    • That was a fark up, it's Salamanca Place I was thinking of. And now I'm curious as to what potential slur/gaf I have caused with Salamander Road, ha ha!
    • Actually everyone on the roads was really well behaved. The only person that did any minor tailgating was a local hoon in a Turbo Focus. Unfortunately we weren't going the same way so there was no grand initial D touge battle. Lots of people pulled over and let me through. The amount of "Hey man nice car, omg skyline, nice 34 man woo" was suprising. Like really suprising. Like almost annoying. My partner was obviously surprised, she'd never seen anyone in the real world point out the car/like the car/want to chat about the car before, so to have like 3 people per day mention it was notable, I could finally say SEE? SOMEONE THINKS THEY'RE COOL. Everyone was also pretty suprised about the weather. Every day was dry and about ~13-14C. Mount Wellington had a sign that said they close the gates at 9pm and I was heading up there at about ~7:30. It was VERY apparent that conditions were getting significantly worse by the minute on the way up and down. The road on the mountain was terrible though, it's no driving road. I have various suspension related questions now. Luckily it was only about 20 minutes from where we were staying to the top of the mountain as said Google maps. We only had the 2 nights in Hobart. We went to the Farm Gate Market though which was really good - And went down to the Hastings Thermal springs/caves down there during the day. I'd definitely be up for going back again, so luckily there's a few more sights yet to see. Didn't get to do the west coast/queenstown/cradle mountain so this was supposed to be a 'scouting' trip anyway of sorts if I were to one day do/take part in/organize a more car-focused trip. As for the boat, it wasn't bad. Well it was bad, but not in the way you're thinking. We did the night trip which leaves at 6:45 (though you have to be there ~2 hours earlier) and arrives the next morning at about 6am. There is nothing to do on the ship. If you plan accordingly and bring a book/tablet/show to watch/charger you can just chill out, take some Travacalm and just sleep through it. The food there is an extremely basic buffet that costs $32 a plate, or $14 for a $3 pizza. The way back we had a travel kettle and a few different types of cup noodles and made our own tea/coffee in the room. This was a far superior way to do it. At the very least book one of the rooms with beds. I guess as we were in the off season we didn't have room mates. You get an option for rooms with 4 beds (2x bunks) or a room with just the two bottom beds. There's also some option for a deluxe queen bed but it's much pricer. We've been on sleeper trains in Asia before so we figured this is similar (and it was)
    • You just gotta be really, really, really clear and decisive with what you want your end product to be. 99% of people who want this conversion aren't "I want to run a 295 front tyre!" so they don't really need the widebody. They just want the OEM body to look a little less dumpy, so bonnet, bar, skirts job done with some camber, stretch, slam. It's when you want that, but then decide to pivot later you get big problems. See also if you're willing to get an all in one fibreglass bar, and you're willing to accept fibreglass problems like cracking the entire item on a driveway, instead of just a piece attached to the bottom, etc etc etc. Decide this all before buyin'.
