Hey everyone, think about this, how is Merli going to run a fast time if he doesn't work out his set up first. His car is an absolute weapon and i'm sure once he's worked out the strengths and weaknesses of his car on the strip there will be a few shocked people. Thats if he chooses to go down this track if not he knows what its capable of and at the end of the day thats all that matters.

Congrats on even going to the drags in the first place i've noticed there seems to be a lot of people on the forum that talk the talk but how many of them have been to the drags???

buster i believe merli does realise what the weakest links are and is going about to rectify them.

just another point, entering in the off street drag night doesn't mean your all of a sudden king $hit...i have lots of respect for many ppl who choose not to goto the strip...for me its just a hell-uva-lot of fun!!!

Flicking thru the latest High Performance Imports last night, and on the final page i saw a top 10 1/4 mile times list. Even with a 13.1 youre easily make the list. Secondly with your terminal speed, i think it was the 2nd highest. (RWD over 2.4L)

OK so many owners may not read HPI or be bothered sending in their times... but for me i would rather a banshee of a car (Merli's) that from what ive seen at the track pulls hard in 2nd, 3rd, 4th blah, blah, blah all the way into top gear. How often does first gear traction count for anything other then qtr mile, and please dont say on the street.

In European mags and vids they have standing mile match races, lots of the cars that win these are loosing by half way, but win by up to 2 seconds, i am always more impressed by top end then low speed traction masking lower hp.

My preference would be for good E.Ts, and scary top end. How many car owners can say their car pulls 13.1s, that can match MOST cars 0-100km/h and embarrass majority 100-250km/h.

That said ill now crawl back under my rock, need to think of ways to break 2min barrier around Eastern Creek (circuit not 1/4 mile), perhaps a new driver.

which implies you're not interested in 1st gear or launching technique. but on the other hand you say:

Which implies your preference is for good ET's.

From my limited knowledge of the quartermile runs I'd have to say the that quarter mile encompasses not only a good launch but also strong throughout all gears and good top end.

Anyway my point is that in order to get a good ET you need a damn good laucnh and a damn good first gear as well.

Yeh thats fair enough, what i was getting at is there are those that wouldnt consider 13.1s that quick, i do, but not others. Also i suspect that 13.1 isnt indicative of the performance of the car.

What i was TRYING to say was i'd take 13.1s (my definition of good, but not brilliant) knowing the car has a lot more in it with traction etc.

As opposed to say a WRX with road/race rubber, exhaust and boost that could run similar times, but not have the same high speed acceleration due to a power deficit.

With strong top end you can still make good ET, even if traction is an issue.

And dont say "not interested in 1st gear or launching technique" , I AM. Technique Yes, an engineering solution that compromises the street driveability or circuit ability of the car, NO.

I'd RATHER good firm road/track suspension, then 90/10 suspension set up for power down for 1/4 mile.

Many of our cars are compromises and its up to the owners to decide which compromise they are to make, be it all out drag car, pure street car, track car or a combination of.

Is any of this making any sense???

andrew do some work on the rear end pineapple or urethane sub frame buses helped me get better traction then the stock shocks and yeah 16 or even 17's there are alot of cars in japn that run 275 45 17" nitto's .

take your time and plan it Ihave seen similar set up cars to you well into the the 12's on street tyres. now you know why I wa so wrapped with my improvemnt in time with just minor tweaking.

thats where the rewards are you car is plent power ful for now get it to its full potoential in it current trim b4 you go further

be happy it was only a drive shaft and yes slicks will give you gearbox big head aches

Big HP + manual rarely = results

Who cares. Drag racing really, at the end of the day dosent mean a whole lot... its just an ET, the MPH tells the story, as Ive read above. Don't go chasing the ET Andrew, as you'll only spend too much time and money as opposed to result.

400 hp the mph give you a very good indication of the cars power in the perfect world with great traction ie good 60' time any car can run a great time. for me the best indication is the fastest time on street tyres cause thats how you drive the thing 99% of the time.

Drive it yes, race it no...

People who know me, know I hardly ever open up the throttle on public roads... Mainly because if I do, and a Police Officer hears my wastegate dump, it's all over... I'm going to get pulled over and the bonnet opened, which is the *LAST* thing I need to happen.

So on the roads, I normally putt around at the speed limit, trying to draw as little attention to myself as possible... Driving a modified Skyline attracts enough attention as it is, without me opening my very VERY unsociable wastegate everywhere...

So basically 95% of the time I drive my car in anger, is on the race track... The car is setup for trackwork, not drag racing, and that's how I like it... I'd say trackwork 90%, drags 10% would be my priority... But that doesn't mean I'm going to neglect that 10%... I still want to cut good times down the 1/4 mile for myself, not for anyone else.

thats the spirit u champion.... i sooooo want to get my 1/4 times too... i will have to go get the times for myself coz i don't wanna be a "my car can run blah blah times" dickhead without even running my car... ^^ andrew, lets go to the strip together when i get back to the beautiful oz land~!~! :(

i will be happy with anything better than 13 flat...

    • Power is fed to the ECU when the ignition switch is switched to IGN, at terminal 58. That same wire also connects to the ECCS relay to provide both the coil power and the contact side. When the ECU sees power at 58 it switches 16 to earth, which pulls the ECCS relay on, which feeds main power into the ECU and also to a bunch of other things. None of this is directly involved in the fuel pump - it just has to happen first. The ECU will pull terminal 18 to earth when it wants the fuel pump to run. This allows the fuel pump relay to pull in, which switches power on into the rest of the fuel pump control equipment. The fuel pump control regulator is controlled from terminal 104 on the ECU and is switched high or low depending on whether the ECU thinks the pump needs to run high or low. (I don't know which way around that is, and it really doesn't matter right now). The fuel pump control reg is really just a resistor that controls how the power through the pump goes to earth. Either straight to earth, or via the resistor. This part doesn't matter much to us today. The power to the fuel pump relay comes from one of the switched wires from the IGN switch and fusebox that is not shown off to the left of this page. That power runs the fuel pump relay coil and a number of other engine peripherals. Those peripherals don't really matter. All that matters is that there should be power available at the relay when the key is in the right position. At least - I think it's switched. If it's not switched, then power will be there all the time. Either way, if you don't have power there when you need it (ie, key on) then it won't work. The input-output switching side of the relay gains its power from a line similar (but not the same as) the one that feeds the ECU. SO I presume that is switched. Again, if there is not power there when you need it, then you have to look upstream. And... the upshot of all that? There is no "ground" at the fuel pump relay. Where you say: and say that pin 1 Black/Pink is ground, that is not true. The ECU trigger is AF73, is black/pink, and is the "ground". When the ECU says it is. The Blue/White wire is the "constant" 12V to power the relay's coil. And when I say "constant", I mean it may well only be on when the key is on. As I said above. So, when the ECU says not to be running the pump (which is any time after about 3s of switching on, with no crank signal or engine speed yet), then you should see 12V at both 1 and 2. Because the 12V will be all the way up to the ECU terminal 18, waiting to be switched to ground. When the ECU switches the fuel pump on, then AF73 should go to ~0V, having been switched to ground and the voltage drop now occurring over the relay coil. 3 & 5 are easy. 5 is the other "constant" 12V, that may or may not be constant but will very much want to be there when the key is on. Same as above. 3 goes to the pump. There should never be 12V visible at 3 unless the relay is pulled in. As to where the immobiliser might have been spliced into all this.... It will either have to be on wire AF70 or AF71, whichever is most accessible near the alarm. Given that all those wires run from the engine bay fusebox or the ECU, via the driver's area to the rear of the car, it could really be either. AF70 will be the same colour from the appropriate fuse all the way to the pump. If it has been cut and is dangling, you should be able to see that  in that area somewhere. Same with AF71.   You really should be able to force the pump to run. Just jump 12V onto AF72 and it should go. That will prove that the pump itself is willing to go along with you when you sort out the upstream. You really should be able to force the fuel pump relay on. Just short AF73 to earth when the key is on. If the pump runs, then the relay is fine, and all the power up to both inputs on the relay is fine. If it doesn't run (and given that you checked the relay itself actually works) then one or both of AF70 and AF71 are not bringing power to the game.
    • @PranK can you elaborate further on the Colorlock Dye? The website has a lot of options. I'm sure you've done all the research. I have old genuine leather seats that I have bought various refurbing creams and such, but never a dye. Any info on how long it lasts? Does it wash out? Is it a hassle?     • These going to fit over the big brakes? I'd be reeeeeeeeaaaall hesitant to believe so.
    • The leather work properly stunned me. Again, I am thankful that the leather was in such good condition. I'm not sure what the indent is at the top of the passenger seat. Like somebody was sitting in it with a golf ball between their shoulders. The wheels are more grey than silver now and missing a lot of gloss.  Here's one with nice silver wheels.
    • It's amazing how well the works on the leather seats. Looks mint. Looking forward to see how you go with the wheels. They do suit the car! Gutter rash is easy to fix, but I'm curious about getting the colour done.
