Regarding the chips.

The only modifications to the chips is that they idle at a slightly higher rpm to make sure that they dont drain the batttery when sitting there with everything running.

they have never had any power mods, and I doubt they ever will.

They mostly drive SS commodores because of the higher resale value at the end of the lease term and becuase they already come with the fe2 suspension.

None have ever had any engine mods done. Can you imagine the shear cost of modifying every single cop car that hits the road. The economics would be all up the sh1t.

Anybody who says that they have a Cop chip in their commo know not of what he says.

BASS OUT

my brother and his mate were working on cop cars, a holden and a ford, at their respective dealerships. The fords discs were badly cracked and damaged, and the holdens were so thin that they had little effect at all.

From my understanding (prob little,) highway patrol (etc) cars, such as the SS's, XR8s and GTs have a chip, but not much else

Although all these cop cars are "fast", i'd rather have one of them chasing me then a 34 or Cappa in Hong Kong

Or so i'm told from a friend who used to live there...

So i guess were lucky we have commos and fords on our ass insted of the true hunters of speed. ( And in Hong Kong their MEAN )

I would imagine they would be chipped at least. The governments when getting these cars probably have a deal with the makers for cop cars, and would be fitted from the factory with these upgrades. That makes sense to me. I can't see a standard 6cyl commondore keeping up with a stolen GTR (or something single turbo for that matter)on a freeway run.

I live next door to a highway patrol dude, he says theyre "nothing special" and only reason we think theyre fast is "whenever you see us we're usually caning it"

Good bloke, only he gets my car confused with another stooge who lives around my area n does all kinds of dumb shit...

Well that clears a lot up. How good is this fe2 suspension? It doesn't sound that great..

Yeh it would suck having the chopper after you.. you'd have no chance unless you wait for it to run out of fuel! Or just stop in the first place.

There's a SS Police commodore down south that hassles all the boy racers in their silvia's skylines ceffy's etc..

It is definitely a little louder than a stock commodore but still legal sounding. Looked like it got up and went as it hunted down a 180sx. :(

Its no wonder the imports get attention from the police.

Head down south on a warm day and watch all the boy racers fly up and down Griffiths Drive doing 100km/h in a 50km/h zone.

Jacks me off really, accelerate hard to near the speed limit but there's no need to keep holding it down.

Suprisingly 90% of the cars that do this are either Commodores or S13's.

post-382-1123208136.jpg

the only reason they seem faster and louder is because the Coppers get up the ALL THE TIME, and when a cop car is trying to chase you, they feel lots quicker than a normal car racing you, because you know that when they catch you, you're fu(ked

In NSW NONE of the cop cars have ECU Mods.

I was told that they do remove the 230km/h speed limiter on the XR6T/XR8 HP cars

It is also not hard to outrun a cop car, but they have the luxury of numbers, they can radio ahead to get you.

Have a friend who worked in a Holden workshop where most of the cops on the Northern Beaches have their cars "done"...

Basically the cars are stock standard; there is nothing special done to them barr the lights, stickers, some reinforcement here and there and maybe the chip. She said the chip was only at request and most did not have them.

NSW COP CARS OF INTEREST:

Smart Roadster

Smart Car

WRX (blue and white)

Cooper S

Armoured 4WD looking thing with PHAT TIRES!!!

I have a mate that works at a ford dealership where a few cop cars are contracted to have there work done on, he said that the ecu simply has a 'cop mode' that you can switch too when using the diagnostic tool and that all it does is takes away the limiter and raises the idle a bit, he isnt sure if it gives any more power or changes anything else. Also they weigh heaps because not only do they have the computers and radio and siren crap but the boot is usually full of equipment, gun/ammo riot gear etc, which is why they are usually below legal limit in height at the rear.

As for weird cop cars ive seen a few new marked magnas, ive been pulled over by an old crappy magna, i saw the smart car that was funny and my mate was pulled over by an unmarked bmw.

That is exactly right. I too work at ford and we do get the police cars from around the local area, (South Brisbane). There is no ECU Mods at all on any vehicle owned by the QLD Police. In QLD they seem to have alot of different unmarked cars now. What I have seen at work and on the streets include:

VZ SV6 Alloytec 190

VZ SS

VZ SS Ute Black

BA XR6T

BA XR6T Ute

BA XR8

BA XR8 Ute

Astra Turbo

AWD Magna

And to the people saying that they would try to get away from the police, Don't even try it! You may think 1 car is only after you but the is 2 things on your car known as number plates. This is all the police need to access your registration details and the address of the registered owner of the vehicle. Even though you have a GT-R and you could easily loose 1 car, more could be called in to block a road up further. If you do loose the police, you will have the boys in blue knocking on your door later on. So don't try it. It just gives today tonight another reason to make us car enthusists look bad.

[END RANT]

Chris.

i agree completly^^^ cops arnt as stupid as they seem they WILL catch you and yes there may be a very luky escape here and there but eventualy you will get caught and then they will most likley start trying to ban GTR's and other good names from our country...

(End Rant)

My parents have a VX II SS which was an ACT police car... This car was a special build from holden, as when they got it up on the computer, it had 'police build number xx"

I've ran new SS's, r33 skylines, 350z's and the most interesting run was against a normal ss commodore a mate had. Same model, everything, and i totally left him for dead.

Compared to other 5.7L commodores i've driven its much faster and louder as others have said. With the auto as well, you can hold it into the gear and it will not automatically shift even if locked in like most others do. Hence its pretty obvious it has an aftermarket computer.

The suspension in them is fairly good too... i cant drive the car to its full potiential, but it sure handles well. They also have cross drilled brakes on the front. And yes, thats how we purchased it. As well as the interior light, and digital speedo, and it also has 2km incriment increases, insted of the usually 10km.

Dayne

as far as i know, VIC cop cars do have ECU upgrades, so they aren't just stock falcon/commodores

they also have slightly stiffer suspension etc

as for the out running...im glad someone finally mentioned license plates....you might get away from them, but i'm sure you didnt VANISH INTO THIN AIR! the first thing they'd do in a pursuit is get your plate. then they don't even need to chase

as for cars cops drive, in melboure every second 1 is either an XR6T or an XR8/SS.

the general patrol cars are just XT/commodores with steelies.

    • I myself AM TOTALLY UNPREPARED TO BELIEVE that the load is higher on the track than on the dyno. If it is not happening on the dyno, I cannot see it happening on the track. The difference you are seeing is because it is hot on the track, and I am pretty sure your tuner is not belting the crap out of it on teh dyno when it starts to get hot. The only way that being hot on the track can lead to real ping, that I can think of, is if you are getting more oil (from mist in the inlet tract, or going up past the oil control rings) reducing the effective octane rating of the fuel and causing ping that way. Yeah, nah. Look at this graph which I will helpfully show you zoomed back in. As an engineer, I look at the difference in viscocity at (in your case, 125°C) and say "they're all the same number". Even though those lines are not completely collapsed down onto each other, the oil grades you are talking about (40, 50 and 60) are teh top three lines (150, 220 and 320) and as far as I am concerned, there is not enough difference between them at that temperature to be meaningful. The viscosity of 60 at 125°C is teh same as 40 at 100°C. You should not operate it under high load at high temperature. That is purely because the only way they can achieve their emissions numbers is with thin-arse oil in it, so they have to tell you to put thin oil in it for the street. They know that no-one can drive the car & engine hard enough on the street to reach the operating regime that demands the actual correct oil that the engine needs on the track. And so they tell you to put that oil in for the track. Find a way to get more air into it, or, more likely, out of it. Or add a water spray for when it's hot. Or something.   As to the leak --- a small leak that cannot cause near catastrophic volume loss in a few seconds cannot cause a low pressure condition in the engine. If the leak is large enough to drop oil pressure, then you will only get one or two shots at it before the sump is drained.
    • So..... it's going to be a heater hose or other coolant hose at the rear of the head/plenum. Or it's going to be one of the welch plugs on the back of the motor, which is a motor out thing to fix.
    • The oil pressure sensor for logging, does it happen to be the one that was slowly breaking out of the oil block? If it is,I would be ignoring your logs. You had a leak at the sensor which would mean it can't read accurately. It's a small hole at the sensor, and you had a small hole just before it, meaning you could have lost significant pressure reading.   As for brakes, if it's just fluid getting old, you won't necessarily end up with air sitting in the line. Bleed a shit tonne of fluid through so you effectively replace it and go again. Oh and, pay close attention to the pressure gauge while on track!
    • I don't know it is due to that. It could just be due to load on track being more than a dyno. But it would be nice to rule it out. We're talking a fraction of a second of pulling ~1 degree of timing. So it's not a lot, but I'd rather it be 0... Thicker oil isn't really a "bandaid" if it's oil that is going to run at 125C, is it? It will be thicker at 100 and thus at 125, where the 40 weight may not be as thick as one may like for that use. I already have a big pump that has been ported. They (They in this instance being the guy that built my heads) port them so they flow more at lower RPM but have a bypass spring that I believe is ~70psi. I have seen 70psi of oil pressure up top in the past, before I knew I had this leak. I have a 25 row oil cooler that takes up all the space in the driver side guard. It is interesting that GM themselves recommend 0-30 oil for their Vette applications. Unless you take it to the track where the official word is to put 20-50w oil in there, then take that back out after your track day is done and return to 0-30.
    • Nice, looks great. Nice work getting the factory parts also. Never know when you'll need them.
