I met a bunch of Skyline owners last night. A nice bunch. One thing had me worried though. Most of the GTR owners had their engines fail within 12 months of getting their cars. The failures (broken ringlands, melted pistons etc.) were caused by lower octane fuel, detonation and poor fuel mapping.

I can understand how the fuel and fuel mapping could cause an engine to fail, but I thought the knock sensors would protect it from detonation damage. But the main issue is the proportion of owners who needed a rebuild.

Why aren't the knock sensors stopping the damage? Do motors die that quickly in Australia? Is this just a poor sample group?

Knock sensors only work to an extent and only can retard the timing so much. Also in some cars they only sense detonation at lower RPM and not full throttle/high RPM because there is so much 'noise' that the detonation sensor cant really tell what is what.

You come across people who dont really know what they're doing and just wind up the boost to be 'fully sik' and dont even know what detonation really sounds like so they just boost it until something drastically goes wrong.

A GTR engine is pretty darn strong and should last just as long as any other Nissan engine if its looked after properly and tuned accordingly. Anyone who gets a rebuild every 12 months a) doesnt really know the basic mechanics of an engine and thus B) shouldnt be owning a GTR if you ask me.

Reason why they die is because a lot of people import jap shitboxes. These cars have been thrashed by the japs, worth nothing, and are sold to aussies for top dollar. They are then thrashed over here, then the engines die.

It takes a fair bit to kill an rb26. The reason why they die is poor tuning, or just wear and tear. If well taken care of, they should last past 300,000 kms. Most of those 32 gtr's would have close to that if not more :)

All RB's knock sensor only functions between 0-4000rpm. Like busky2k said there is probably too much noise above this point so it doesn't operate.

That said I think everyone has made valid points. I have tuned my car on 98ron and if I run anything lower it detonates at full load. More people need to be wary of this!!!!! USE THE FUEL THAT IT WAS TUNED ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My knock sensor in my r33 RB25 seems to pick up knock readings until redline. The hand controller shows knock values and the engine light flashes when over 60. Is it getting the knock signal from some other alternate "detection" method over 4000rpm? How many of these "die in 12 month" cars are running stock everything? I've always read heat kills an engine. Boost x 1.5 = Heat x 10

my pistons cracked, even thou it was running 12psi ( r32 89 gtr ) and it blew up... it said 112,000k but i think it really had 250+ :)

i sold it with damage motor for a r33 gts and now i am making it turbo B)

i am scared of gtr because engine can fail because of high intake temp

they work through your wohle RPM range

Knock sensors wont protect at all. If your gonna knock, your gonna knock and the initial big one is the most damaging before the ECU (if at all) puls timing etc

Biggest problem is shit tuning.

Second biggest problem is cheap owners who dont have the tuning fix or arent willing to pay $$ for a decent tune.

And 3rd is the big end bearing. They tend to do those here and there if your tracking it. thats just ages

In a standard ECU they operate between 0 - 4000 rpm and up to about 1-2 psi of boost. Within that range if an engine detonates it will retard the timing. In most applications a knock sensor will retard timing before you even hear or see it.

If the stock R32 GTR ecu is anything like the stock r32 rb20det ecu then the knock sensor will work up until 4000rpm or there abouts regardless of airflow.

It will however, dip and carry on that will take until 4500rpm or there abouts until power recovers.

Boost is not metered, its airflow that is represented as load.

Mine was pinging at 4000rpm on the stock ecu with 6psi, causing a massive powerdip that took until 4500-5000rpm to recover.

like R31 nismoid touched on the biggest problem is cheap, tight arse owners. they use cheap oil, the don't always use good fuel. they go cheap upgrades like winding up the boost without looking at other upgrades and they don't maintain the things properly. then they blow them up and cry. there is nothing wrong with a RB26 engine. if it is looked after (and i don't mean babied, just well maintained) then it will live a long, long life. obviously the only problem is with all second hand cars you don't know how it was treated before you got it.

    • If I had "perfect R33 GTR" kinda money I would have bought one of the crazy expensive low mileage HJA cars, but I am sadly not that wealthy. I already picked this car out of various Skylines for sale locally, most of which were worse in some way. Only a few cars were actually better but also more expensive. In terms of buying a motor locally, I at least have the option to inspect it myself and juding the seller as a person, and used or freshly rebuilt engines that some people sell are actually ok price-wise. I knew the car was going to require work, but shit piled up real fast and I haven't even driven 1000km yet as the turbo started oiling like a bitch within a few weeks after I got the car.   I assume it wasn't actually me who cracked it, though there is no way to know when that crack formed and if the previous owner even knew it was there. Buying another 05U Block can be a gamble, yeah, but the cheapest PRP cast block is like twice or more money-wise, and billet is 3 or 3 times as much. For now I am most likely just keeping the current engine, as a rebuild or engine swap isn't happening right now. But I am seriously considering buying a second engine and selling mine in return. Might be a sweet deal at the end.
    • Hi all. I need some help buying the correct size banjo bolts for my 2860 turbos. Because whoever installed them tore up the original part, I ordered new ones of this kind, because I just figured these were the most leak-resistant option as I already had trouble with a shitty braided line. I need to know the thread size of the smaller left hole, that is the turbo oil feed connection. I found out so far that the turbo oil inlet apparently has a 7/16"-24 thread, but I cannot find any listing or description of the thread size on this line. I do not have the original bolts. I tried using the bolts that were in the turbos (the ones that were mounted with the shitty braided line) but they sit very loosely so they can't be the right thread. Means either these bolts are the wrong ones (how do they fit the turbo then? no clue) or the wraparound-lines have a different thread than the turbo oil feed itself. Help is appreciated, asking Nissan directly is obviously not going to work.
    • EDIT: PSA to whoever stumbles upon this thread. It is in fact a crack in the block that caused this concern. Just letting you know. In my case, a few cm long hairline crack going horizontally above the turbo oil feed. Classic RB shit I guess
    • Might as well pop in some cams, head gasket, head studs, and a flex sensor. Full send.
