Cant beat a r31.  cheap, common, non turbo, cheap as parts, and go alright for what they are.  I beleive they are also under the new P plater laws limit.

lol i think its safe to say an NA R31 is WELL under the limit

not allways true

my first car was and still is my R33 gts-t .. paid $18k for it .. have had it 5 months.. was scarey handing over $18k of my hard earnt cash.. but i have not regretted it at all since

just depends how much you want it and how hard youve worked for it i spose

-Ruffels

what he said cept replace the 18k with 14.5k. :(

im getting my first car in 8 weeks, when i have 15K. I plan on getting a GTS-T R32 or possibly a GTS4. A lot of you say thats two much. well yeh your right it is. But this is something I as an individual really want. So the fact that i can have it and its in my reach. I would regret not doing it. I want to get this car because i love them. My mum keeps saying "its not gunna be worth anywhere near that later" she doesnt understand im buying the car out of passion, not a frikken investment. anyways thats my somewhat off-track two cents...

you'll prang your first car. not all people do, but many do.

it might not be the best thing to take on the stress of owning a 15k car at a young age. the stress might outdoo the enjoyment. i'd get a R31, save the money and get a GT-T when they come down in a few years. Driving a performance car requires humility, that comes with age and road experience. otherwise you'll end up knee deep in fines or in a smash from road racing, cause young people in skylines at lights = bogans in VL's.

good luck either way.

Thanks for all the imput guys. Looks like most of you, aside from a select few, started from the bottom and worked your way up.

One thing mentioned is cops.. Yesterday the cops came to my school and slapped 2 yellow stickers on 2 guys VL's. (suckers). Anyway, what exactly do cops try and spot you for? Since they are around every bush, waiting to jump out and throw out the yellow stickers like ninja stars...

-Thanks for the imput so far.

YEah,

My first car was a 1.2L 1971 corrolla. Cost me $1000, sold it for $800. Best value for first car. Inexspensive to run and cheap parts.

My r33 is my 6th car. Take ur time gettin up there, experience is everything.

Last thing u wanna do is get a nice car and right it off due to inexperience.

Good advice B)

Get something mainstream less than a 1.6Litre. Non turbocharged. 1.6 is more than enough for a first car then build up over a few years. I would say skyline at maybe 23-25 to give you chance to get your no claims bonus, get experience and get financially secure to fund one. :P

Dont wait until ur old to get your skyline, just get at least a year driving experience (on your P's) before you get it.

I got mine within a month of getting of my P's (21), and im glad i waited.

But im also glad i got it when i did, you may as well get a fast car when you want one and can. If you wait too long you'll get sucked into buying a house instead.

And insurance isnt that bad, i just got rating 1 the other day and am now down to $900 a year (with rating one protection)

if you're in a skyline on your p's, they'll more than likely pull you over no matter what!

i started with an $400 torana, kept it for a bout four years and sold it for $1200 (after doing a heap to it..). that gave me experience, then i got the gts4t. popped the 4wd fuse.. im glad i didnt start off with that much power at the rears. i was worried about it boosting around a corner and losing it, as my friend did in his r33.. slid into the gutter and wrote it off. the few times i did get a bit of a slip in the rear, i was able to control it cos of the time spent in the torrie. i lost the rear in the torana a number of times (some not even being stupid!) and it was just an old red six.. would hate to image what i would have gotten myself into with an rb20det!

im more for the experience side of this discussion, i feel with experience there not *too* much of a worry with costs of parts and repairs, though insurence is a must incase of soemone else without experience :S

shaun.

sorry not necessarily true, thats what i figured when i first got my car, the cops never once targeted me.... the secrect is..... dont drive like a f**king idiot on public roads....

cruise round normally and they just look at you go past. although they do have my plates down atm ( undisclosed reasons that wont be talked about on sau ), but thats another story.

Jar what your saying makes sense, but you gotta admit some cops out there are dickheads and just want to give P platers shit. and will pull over imports especially. apparently owning a nice car means you MUST be an illegal street racer...

For a first car, I wouldnt recommend anything that would encourage a lead foot. Whether it be a fast car like a GTST or Commodore, or a slow car that looks flash, like a Lancer Coupe, your mates are going to encourage you to do stupid shit if you've got such a car. Stupid shit that will get you into trouble. Stupid shit that will make you poor, without a car, or dead.

Get some kms under your belt before getting into a quick car. Then go have fun!

without a doubt mate.... thats why they have my plates, not coz i did anything wrong, but coz my R33 is one of only 3 in seymour, and the fact im the only P plater out of the 3 makes me the bad one ;)

but that was only coz one smart ass cop decided to be well a jerk off, the rest of them dont give me shit at all.

long story short, its your money, do what you like, you prang it, you live with the insurance hike. If your gonna be an idiot, at least be an idiot at the track, least that way your less likely to crash it or hit someone else (not saying its not imposible).

Man i say get a real cheep like 600 buk car

EG: i seen some datto 180B's going for around that price then drive that for about a 6 months to a year get some experience

an over that 6 months to a year keep saving up then after that time sell the datto and buy yourself a real nice R33 GTS-t for 16-17k

PULLS CHICKS:P...and u will still be around 18.....so it's not like ya have to wait a long time....

My first car was, and still is.. a N13 nissan exa Non turbo. Cost me $3700, has cost me too much to keep it running.. (did'nt even have oil in it when i bought it :O) and now i'm selling it, i'd be lucky to get $3,400 for it(Clutch is starting to slip)

My advice to you is, if you have $15,000 and are willing to spend it, buy something newer and more reliable, that hasnt been trashed, and won't keep costing you big $$ to keep it running... like a cheap $400 car, and just get whatever is your style. I don't think you should limit yourself in what car you get just because your 18.. just be carefull, don't drive like a maniac because you WILL get yourself into trouble.

I love Lancers. And any other riced up car. They're hillarious. Examples:

These cars MUST be so much faster than mine! Just look at them! Like a RACING CARS!!! Or Space SHIPS!!! With all their stickers and spoilers and paper thin rubber and cut springs and subwoofers!!! BROOM BROOM!!! Like Michael Schumacher's car cross with a Jet Fighter!!!

It's so very funny... I just laugh when I see those clown cars.

Okay I'm done acting like a 5 year old now

Actually a friend of mine owned a 1.5 litre carby Lancer coupe with a full exhaust and extractors etc. We can look back on it and laugh at how slow it was compared to our current rides (he is an S13 man now).

"OFF TOPIC NONSENSE COMPLETE:

I'm curious - is that $15K for the car, then:

2K for insurance (I would want my 15K car insured!)

1K maintenance (around that a year, with minor issues)

2K for mods in the first year (even just wheels / tyres / exhaust)

What I'm insinuating is - can you really AFFORD a 15K skyline? Similarly to people who can just stretch to a 20K GTR32 with $0.00 left for inevitable maintenance / insurance / major problems when buying a 'cheapie' GTR (no offense intended to people who have got good, cheap GTRs, but there must be alot of crap GTR32s out there!)

good points !

and $2k wont get you far with rims/tyres and exhaust! rims and tyres alone you'll be pushing $2k

    • Nah, OEM washer bottle and brake fluid reservoirs are fine I don't know what it is with the plastic that Mazda used, some plastics, like the washer bottle and brake fluid res are fine, and still look new after 20 years use, where as the coolant expansion tank, and PS reservoir, that I replaced with new OEM items when I first got the car, turned yellow and started getting brittle a few years later If the dirty yellow stained plastics didn't trigger me there wouldn't be an issue, but they did, much like the battery bracket....... Meh As for going back to work full time to support car stuff, nope, why, because I own a Mazda NC MX5, not a Nissan R series Skyline 🤣
    • I've never heard of CJ-motor, so can't advise you on them. I'd just go straight to GCG for a GCG highflow though. Seems no point to use a middleman. I'm somewhat surprised that the price on the CJ site is lower than the GCG retail price. Even though CJ would get a discount of some sort, you would hardly expect them to give up so much margin. Maybe the price is out of date? Having said that "I'd go to GCG"...when I did my highflow, I went to Hypergear. I did this https://hypergearturbos.com/product/rb25dethighflow/#tab-dyno-results with the R34 OP6 450HP profile. With the BB centre (extra $400) and intially with the standard boost actuator, but I eventually got him to send me the high pressure one when I got to the point of being able to actually use it. Ends up costing the same sort of money as the GCG highflow, but this is, of course, the turbo that I KNOW has a shorter length core and so moves the comp cover rearwards. The GCG apparently doesn't do that. My mechanic also swears by the GCG highflow, given that we have another turbo rebuilder who does something essentialy the same as theirs, using Garrett wheels. He says it stands up at really low revs and makes good power. I haven't pushed my HG highflow past ~240-250rwkW yet (should have a little more in it, but unclear how much) and it does have a fairly gentle boost ramp. OK, it's much better now that I have gotten my boost controller tuned up on it.  A lot of my earlier unhappiness was because I couldn't keep the wastegate flap as closed as it needed to be (including some mechanical issues). I'd still prefer it to boost up nearly as quickly as the stocker, and it certainly a bit slower than that. So maybe the GCG one is worth the first look (for you).
    • Ok thanks 🙂 I will higly consider this. Any "known" company for a good reviews and experience to send that off? Is that CJ-motor good one? Or go straight to GCG site? I need to use VPN to even find some of those "shops" let alone access them 🙂
    • You can literally put in as much WMI as it takes to quench the combustion totally (and then back it off a little, obviously), and it will keep making more and more power. The power comes from the cooling effect of the water (and the meth) and the extra fuel (the meth, which also has massive octane). It is effectively exactly like running E85. One might be slightly better than the other, but they are damn close. But with either you can lean on the boost or the timing (or both) waaaay more than with just petrol and the results are similar. Here's the first thing I googled for an anecdotal bit of evidence. Can't access the attachment without being a gold member, but it is there for the getting if able to, or searched up elsewise perhaps. https://www.hpacademy.com/forum/general-tuning-discussion/show/wmi-vs-e85/
