well i got my car lowered with questies old springs, must say over all drop is not as large as i thought but definatly not part of the 4WD devision anyore.

got to get a cammera to post some pics.

Oh well, I brought and built the car to use it, But hope it will stay straight.

Its the peppering of the front end, windscreen, mirrors and rear sides of the guards from little rocks and crap on the track that makes the mess - ideal places to put stickers!

I remember we painted the mirrors on the GTSt at the start of one year and three meetings later the black paint was near sandbasted off!

Its got some of that sandblasted look already, the Joy of driving on a 700 mtr gravel driveway.

Car looks great Leigh, im looking forward to seeing it out amongst the other boy racers in the TSS

Updates for me: Picked up my new belts, fuel filter and injectors are all clean and tagged ready to go in :D

Pulled the 186 down in the FC on saturday, it now has a new head gasket, new inlet manifold gasket, rocker gasket, lifters and cam adjusted, full engine/heater flush in both directions.

End verdict = car running again and quieter than before with no lifter noise so i can not only hear myself think whilst driving i can hear the motor purrrrrrrrrrrrr like a kitten :)

Started work on repairing my standard FC steering wheel to replace the sports wheel and tidied up some of the wiring this morning.

Project FC resto has begun :P

I ordered the race bearings, rings, rods, pistons and gaskets today and hopefully will be here by the end of the week so i can continue with the engine build...

Plans for the car are:

build/install hot 186

change to disc brake front end

finish install of 308 rear

repair/replace/change interior (new front seats and rails, reupholster rear seats and door skins) gauges, repair steering wheel and change/modify dash

new rubbers all around

repairs to bodywork including small rust sections

tidying up colour and adding the white over yellow for 59 colours

repair and replace some chrome work along with re polishing wheels (and hopefully some FC caps)

plus lots lots more :/

After 6 months of being stuffed about by people, its finally going. Short story, built a shit hot 3L, ended up having a bent crankshaft, slogged all the bottom end bearing to bits and made a big mess. Scrapped that idea, and just dropped a S1 25DET in, all stock for now, will slowly build it up.

The RX7 is still ticking over... the whole interior is now out and hope to get the engine out next weekend. It goes to Jason White in early November for the cage and interior paint.

Had to remove the windscreen on the weekend to get the dash out... of course the screen broken during the process!

seen this thing cruise past my work for the last couple of days... fark its nice :( definately drool worthy :);)

the joys of stripping out a car.i found that because i didn't replace anything back in the car except the dash. i had lots of radom screwsa and stuff left over and lots of rattle in the dash now over bumps. even thought i replaced all teh bolts an screws i could find.and for $70 the local windscreen place came up, pulled my windwo out and stored it and reinstalled it when the cage was finished.

yeah same, only reinstalling the the dash shell. have thrown out heaps of usless crap, but kept the interior plastics for the tarmac rally regulations.

a weekend and a few tubes of stickaflex will sort out your rattles!

i was going to get the windscreen taken out, but thought I'd chance it as it was pitted and old so a new one would go alright... plus i'm keen on getting a heated one... although seems to be a fair wait unless you have a commdore, falcon or 911!

took the a/c and heat box out last night... not much left now!

Yeah, thats teh only thing holding me back from gettign rid of my heater box. and that damn rainx works for about the first 1hour then starts to fog up. i remember from my old days at Autoban that u could buy the demister kits for rear windscreens that had teh strips and everything needed. but i can't seem to find them anywere on the internet. i kept all my plastics as well. just wondering how much you have to replace for targa tas etc..? and what about the boot as well?

Damn, who did your windscreen that cheap? Widscreens O'brian are charging me up around the $300 to remove and reinstall both my front and rear screens.

I'd heard of demister kits but not seen them for sale. We don't run a heater box in Mark Perry's R32 GTSt track car. Only one wet meeting in three years so not a massive concern.

For Targa/Rally Tas/Rallye Burnie etc you need to run but can mod dash, console, parcel shelf, a/b/c pillar trim.

You can replace door trim with carbon or cut standard trim to suit.

If its not practical to run a/b/c pillar trim, parcel shelf or rear side trim you can replace with fabric stuck on.

Boot you can strip.

With a hatch like RX7 I have to keep boot plastics as they are visable.

Ability Windscreens in burnie. and that included a generic rubber seal that looks heaps better than the old ones.

t01-100, how would i go about doing that fabric around were the cage is all tagged to the pillars? do you usually just use standard marine grade carpet or speaker box carpet?

If the A-pillar is plated or has a bar running tight and right down the pillar don't worry about putting anything on that one, its really just B and C pillars they look at as bars are usualy clean of them aside of a little tagging up top. Yeah just light weight speaker box material would do... thats all we did with the Integra if you caught a look of that in Burnie.

Some people cut up the plastic trim, but it can look terrible if not done well... with the RX7 I reckon some plastics would have to be cut into four pieces then glued into place to work so stuff that!

    • Yes that’s what im trying to decide. Should I do stock gtt box or enclosed or open pod.
    • Also, I note OP is in Melbourne, which begs the question... are you aware of how illegal your car will be with a turbo, and intercooler and any sort of filter change? I don't know how you can get past the "2 intake mods" "rule" that seems to exist in Vic. Fully engineered might or might not get you there.
    • If you have a turbo... then the ducting holes I used to feed the pod are not available because your intercooler likely uses them. If you have an intercooler, your IAT's are going to be goverened by how good your intercooler setup is. I'm yet to really see anyone check IAT with a snorkel/boxed pod/proper CAI versus and unshielded pod. It would be interesting! But I suspect that the differences would not be so noticeable as if you were N/A as the intercooler is where the air is being cooled.. and out in front where the FMIC would be is a pretty good spot for it.. When I was turbo I pushed the stock GTT box as far as I could and made some pretty good power out of it, and noticed on the street I never made the same power/boost. Then I did a before and after run with a pod filter versus the box and picked up about 9PSI from the same boost duty cycle and about 50KW instantly. I never ran the stock box again, and recently removed it for my N/A setup. The box is restrictive to a degree - Even with the V8 setup I noticed I picked up power by removing the box completely, so punching holes from the bottom of it to get air from the passenger guard *helps* but the most effective one in my case was simply having the ducts, a pod, and no box around it. In my experience, *more* air was better than cold air. The air (with ducts) will be cooled off as you start moving, and especially if you start moving fast (a race track). It actually moves around quite a bit as you can see.
    • Well you could certainly buy or build an enclosure for a pod in that corner of the bay. It is absolutely vital that there is a nice big opening to let cold air in to it from the front or underside, otherwise it will just pull air in around the edges from the bay, and if that air is hot, you gain nothing from enclosing the pod. There is lots of good evidence around (including on here, see posts by @Kinkstaah for example) showing that pods pulling hot air from the bay is only a problem when you're static or slow in traffic, and that as soon as you get the car up and moving the air being grabbed by the pod cools down. Although that will obviously vary from car to car, whether there is a flow of cold air to the pod or if it all has to come through the radiator area, etc etc. Obviously, the whole exercise requires as much thought as anything else does. Doing the lazy thing will often end up being the dumb thing. The stock GTT airbox has a cold air snorkel to feed it from over the radiator. Shows that Nissan were thinking. The GT airbox is upside down compared to the turbo one, yeah? Inlet at the bottom, AFM/exit on the lid? That might make it harder to route the turbo inlet pipe using the GT airbox than a turbo one. That would probably be the main reason I'd consider not using it, not that it is too small and restrictive. I'm looking at a photo of one now and the inlet opening seems nice and large. Also seems to have the same type of snorkel that the turbo one has. Maybe all that's required is to make a less restrictive snorkel/cold air inlet, perhaps by punching down through the guard like I did.
