What's everyones thoughts on the Nikon D3000? I'm looking to get into photography just as a hobby. This camera is cheap (after Chrissy sales are awesome.) haven't used a DSLR before. Thanks for any help/opinions

as above????

900 bux for a twin lens kit

seems like agood buy

canon... go canon

you get what you pay for with these so just stretch it out to suit what you need. Looking at page 1 of this thread, the body will probably be outdated in a few years anyway. its an expensive and a "never be satisfied with what i got" hobby haha

Edited by I GOT RICE

might as well add my gear... will expand on it later.

Nikon D90 Base

Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD (IF)

Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro

Nikkor 50mm f/1.8

Nikkor 35mm f/2

Will probably pick up a 14-24mm wide-angle zoom and a 50mm f/1.4 sometime in the next couple of months. With everyone trading up to FX lenses and bodies, the DX lenses are dirt cheap, esp overseas... which suits me just fine for now.

fatz, get a canon. very easy to use and great pics for beginners. :P

not to mention cheaper lenses in australia, and a lot more market share than any other brand locally.

I'm a novice at this but some of the photos here have inspired me to get a DSLR.

I'm looking at buying Canon 550D. Which lenses would you consider a must-have?

Is their twin-kit a good option?

http://www.canon.com.au/en-AU/For-You/Digi...LR-Cameras/550D

Thanks

Michael

50/1.8, the one at the top of the page (note how link ends with 5018 >_<)

because its VERY cheap and VERY good

quality of pictures taken with a nifty fifty will be way better than a kit lens

ps that's just what _I_ would do after having taking photos for a while now and

having seen the difference between a kit lens and a prime

if as a newby the ability to zoom in is important then the kit lens might be better

for your needs

Actually, the 18-55mm IS kit lens has been rated pretty damned highly for something so inexpensive, so if you need a zoom lens, just buy the package with just the 18-55mm (assuming you want a zoom lens to start out on).

The extra money you would have spent on the second lens in the twin IS kit would be MUCH better invested in the Nifty Fifty that Zennon linked to - I have one, and agree that it is an incredible lens for what you pay for it (about $125)!

ricklee: There is no 50mm f1.8 on current sigma lineup

there is 50mm f1.4, which is not cheaper than the cannon equivalent but better

http://www.sigmaphoto.com/shop/standard-prime-lenses

GoldZilla: the 18-55 kit lens is a reasonable lens, but i won't rate it as a decent lens.

I will also not say the 50mm is better than the 55-250IS

they serve completely different purpose

Actually, the 55-250mm IS kit lens should be the lens that rated pretty damned highly for something so inexpensive :D

Zennon:

the 50mm f1.8 is a fantastic lens for it's price, the problem is the focus length of it

80mm (on a 550d) is very limited and i will not recommend it to people who use it as their only lens

mitric88:

Stand zoom will be the lens you use the most and will be the first lens to go if you upgrade

my advise is to spend money on it

for great money for value with great image quality i will go for Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 (A16 - http://www.tamron.com/lenses/prod/1750_diII_a016.asp)

that $500? lens is sharper than my 17-40L & 24-105L that 2-3 times the price

second lens will be the 50mm 1.8 Zennon recommend if you want a cheap fast prime lens

or the 55-250is if long focus range is what you after

once you reach this stage you should have good idea what you want :nyaanyaa:

yup sorry, didn't see the 1.8!

I'm a fan of the 1.8s for both Nikon and Canon, but you feel the limits after a while.

    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
