Recommend me a turbo/cam setup- RB25
Lithium replied to ironmcl's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
EFR8374 and Tomei Pon cams. The EFR8374 is proven time and time again to go >450kws and is responsive as hell for a turbo capable of that, the pon cams retain VCT and the setup should stay perfectly streetable. A 6466 or a GTX3584RS are both serious overkill. -
Borg Warner EFR Series Turbo's V 2.0

How does just normal driving compare between the two? And how much harder is it to get it to stand up initially? -

Nice! Very very interested to see how this goes, those are capable of some huge power When do you aim to have it running by? -
Which should I go with GTX2863, 2530, or 2860-5

+1 to all this -

Shit that sucks. To be honest that is worse than I expected... Enough so that I suspect that something may need sorting there. How did you do the compressor upgrade etc? Is there any chance something isn't air tight or whatever ? I am a skeptic of the combo BUT that still seems a bit off to me. What did it make before playing with the turbos? Edit: oh pump gas. Right that explains some of it but that lag seems over the top to me still -
Hi @infomotive - cheers again for sharing all this Is this car all done now? Was this 655kw the final figure? If so, was the GTW3884R a drop in swap for the T04Z - possibly even using the T04Z turbine housing? I have a friend looking for ~1000hp @ crank (will be tuned on an engine dyno) on E85 with a 25/30 and already has a T04Z, this looks to me like this could be the most cost effective upgrade. I assume this has pretty big cams too?

Smh. For a start, if you read the Garrett technical articles to try and broaden your horizons a bit (try starting here: https://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/turbo_tech_basic) you'll find that their tech info contradicts what is just meant to be a loose guideline for people who don't know enough to work out the suitability of a turbo for their car better. I think it's a silly idea doing even that as it causes this kind of conversation, and I was sick of them ten years ago. There are WAY too many variables involved to make a power claim like that, as evidenced by the fact that if you put a 525hp rated GT3076R on a motor with no supporting mods it doesn't instantly make 525hp just because it has a 525hp rating. Now, my experience with people saying the things you have so far there is no point me pushing that point further so I'll stick with something much more obvious and easy to digest (hopefully). HKS did NOT put that power rating on the GT2510, and they have never put a power rating on a HKS/Garrett GTX2563R as they never made one - so there is no reason to think that squeezing a compressor wheel from a GTX2863R into the compressor housing of a GT2510 and make the engine it's feeding try and flow through the GT2510 exhaust wheel is going to result in way more power than HKS ever rated the GT2510 to. So yes, sure - someone can physically make some Frankenstein out of Garrett and HKS bits... but don't expect to take the technical or marketing documentation of those two and expect them to reflect on what the resulting mutant will behave like. -

I would go GTX2860Rs, personally. I suspect they are a bit underestimated and they should do your target power range with really good response. -
Ohhhhhhhhh. I had just skimmed over assuming you had turned the boost up more, this is someone elses car? That's not so bad then

Anyone running a GTX40-series on an RB30 hybrid?
Lithium replied to dorifticon's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
I'm guessing he has buggered off or something, no response in months since my response. So far they seem like a lemon, someone I know upgraded from a GTX3582R to a GTX4088R and didn't really pick up anything really worthwhile power wise but got a heap more lag - then went to an EFR9180 and picked up response and a bunch of power. -
Good power! But yeah, solid point @Dose Pipe Sutututu - its what, 100kw at 4000rpm??? That is possibly the least power I've ever seen from an RB30DET at those rpm!
-
Nice Be interesting to see what VCT does too, the spool already is very impressive for the power - cheers for sharing!
-
Nice, really interesting results overall. What is the difference between the blue "E68" and the green "E68 boost earlier" curves? 655kw @ wheels isn't messing about at all, should be hell of a fast car there The spool looks better than a few of the GTW results I've seen, quite cool to see a 25 head being used for something of this kind of power- is it still VCT?
-
Really really interesting how much... Or little difference the a/r change made. Is this a divided setup? And crikey - this looks like it's going to end up being a complete animal.
-
Nice!! Cheers for sharing :). More or less what one would expect, as you said. A few hundred rpm laggier too by the looks? And this would be on an RB30?
-
Hi Jason, I can't speak for everyone but I suspect this is probably the best place for all things "modern" Garrett really. I for one would be really interested to see how the GTW3884R compares with a T04Z. Is it a 67mm GTW? Anything else (ie, if its the same exhaust housing a/r etc) would be awesome info too For Oz folks reference, everything I've seen indicates Infomotive's dyno reads pretty comparable with the Dyno Dynamics dynos commonly used in Oz.

On E85? If so, nice - sound be a beast of a setup -

Lithium replied to Piggaz's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
When are you aiming to have it running by? Very interested to see how it goes, if you plan to run it up to high power (ie, 1000hp+ @ crank on E85) then it should definitely offer an unusually good drive for the power level with a 2.6 - though really too much less than 850hp @ crank you're potentially going to be living with more lag than the effort justifies. Please update when you get it going though, it's a very interesting setup! -

I guess I've had no direct experience with them - but while I think these turbos are awesome I feel a bit like people expect magic from them. I could possibly be talking them down a bit but I personally would never have suggested these for a spool improvement over -5s and I'm not sure what gave you the impression that substantially larger turbos (the EFR6758 has a 30% larger inducer and a 25% larger exducer on the compressor side than a -5 and flow >40% more!) are going to spool better - let alone substantially better? They will certainly respond very well for so much turbo on a 2.6, but if they are a lot laggier than you are hoping for when shifting from -5s I hope they don't get bagged for not performing as well as they should. It would be a huge achievement to even not give a fair amount away to the -5s. -
Borg Warner EFR Series Turbo's V 2.0
Lithium replied to Piggaz's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Depends on your targets and the spec of the 26. It is a SERIOUS amount of turbo for a 2.6, I'd guess you may end up with something that ends up "all in" around 5000rpm - depending on target boost, but capable of making a big amount of power. Would hope you've set your motor up to rev to 8000rpm, if not slightly more and have everything strong enough to pump a decent amount of boost into it to make it worthwhile. -

Oh right - that's really going to "doughy" up the driving experience... I wouldn't really any take what a solid drive of it feels like if it's running that soft timing on that soft boost. -

Lithium replied to Piggaz's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Is it tuned? Or is this just running around on the previously mentioned 7-9psi? There is definitely no magic, these things (particularly the 8374 and the 9180) are still large turbos - they just are very responsive for the flow they provide. E85 and well over 400kw will make it all make much more sense -
Yep, that's what I'm seeing
-
Here is an interesting comparison, someone in Subaru world went from a 1.03a/r Gen1 GTX3582R to a 1.03a/r Gen2 GTX3584RS with everything else the same spec.
-
They just quote some arbitrary hp number which annoys me no end, if you run a "705hp" Precision turbo on a diesel engine you are not going to make anywhere NEAR that power - though if you remove that turbo and then put it on a serious engine running "FTW Black" race fuel you could end up making 900-1000hp - yet on both engines it could have been completely at choke flow. Even "lb/min" really is a slightly crap rating for air flow, the whole "corrected gas flow" thing is all well and good when Borg Warner, Garrett, Holset etc all use different standards for defining what mass air flow is moved in whatever conditions.
