a helicoil is a bad idea, because using a m10 helicoil would require the hole to be drilled out to 10.3mm (refer here - http://www.thorintl.com/Drill-Sizes-HeliCoils-Metric.htm ) As the hole is currently threaded for an M12 thread, it has a major root diamater of 12mm (refer here - http://www.newmantools.com/tech/threadm.htm ) ie, once you have removed the internal 12mm thread, which you would have to do, wether to use a helicoil or any other type of sleeve, the hole you are left with is already too big. You "could" bore the motor right out to, say M16, and make a treaded sleeve up with an M16 male thread and an M10 female thread (by the pic it looks like you would have enough meat to do it) but that seems like a hell of a lot of work to me

/thread geddit? Srsly, anything soft enough to have a thread cut into it at that thickness will strip as soon as any weight is put against it. Helicoils (which are made from high carbon steel) are at leat 1.5mm thick.

RB30DETT > rebuild RB25 > second hand engine IMO second hand engines / front cuts etc should only be an option if you need to get mobile asap

Thermo Wrap... Is It Actualy Decent?
Stinky Rooster replied to chef_stagea's topic in Four Door Family & Wagoneers
ceramic coating and heat wrapping do 2 very different things and you need to be aware of which one you are chasing. Ceramic coating is a heat barrier that inhibits heat transfer to other parts of the engine (ie exhaust manifold to cylinder head) because, as we all know, heat = less power (inside the air pump we call an engine, anyway) Used on the entire exhaust side of the engine process, it forces the exhaust to carry away "waste" heat and not let it soak into the engine, whereby forcing undue load on to the heat exchange cuircuit. Thermo wrapping of exhausts is a different kettle of fish altogether, and especially on race cars, is not there to stop the heat being absorbed into other engine components, its to keep the heat in the pipes. If it was to stop radiation then simple waffle shields would be used (like on factory set ups) combined with an efficient CAI setup. The main reason for its use is because a gas's volume will increase in proportion to its temperature, which in turn increases its pressure. Exactly how much benefit this would provide in a turbo charged car I am yet to be convinced of, but in a NA application, when combined with a free flowing exhauist and a well designed set of extractors, it increases pulse scavenging by a huge amount, which in turn provides many ecomony and power advantages. -
has anyone checked the timing since the belt was done?

Nope, cats became law in Australia in 1986 when it became law that all new vehicles had to run on unleaded fuel. The main reason cars didnt run them before, was because the lead in super fuel would f**k them in fairly short order by poisoning the chemical reaction, eliminating the ability to deal with NoX. What I find interesting, is a badly tuned car running a cat, or a car with a badly positioned cat (ie, aftermarket one fitted to a "custom" exhaust) is actually at a greater risk of ejecting such lovely byproducts such as amonia and hydrogen sulphide (also known as rotten egg gas) Now, all the tree hugging stuff aside, that shit is poisonous, not just to the environment, but to us as well, and a decat piped car cant produce THAT shit no matter how badly tuned/popping hektik flames QFT

research people! acording to the drivesafe handbook (the license handbook) the car with a portion in front has right of way (epic fkn lulz, THAT should clear things up eh?) Also, when merging, BOTH lanes have to indicate, regardless of location Linky - http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/mediaFiles/...veSafePart3.pdf

Are you looking to learn as a way of forging a career? Or just to kickstart a hobby? If you want to make a living out of it, then an apprenticeship or traineeship is the only way to go. Start your research here http://www.trainingwa.wa.gov.au/apprentice.../detcms/portal/ If its just a hobby thing, then the tafe course you linked to would be an excellent way to start. Also, star looking into joining an active car club. Offering your services to an enthusiast or events club would be surrounding yourself with like minded individuals, and helping them out (with events stuff, flag marshalling and the like) and you will soon find yourself flooded with more information about cars and stuff than you will know what to do with.

Pictures Of Your Crashed Cars Thread
Stinky Rooster replied to La Bomba's topic in General Automotive Discussion
OK, I'm in Dickhead having a midlife crisis in a WRX pulled out of a t-junction ~10m in front of me. Car was a financial write off, but has since been put back on the road by another forum member, god bless him -
so, do you think that you would have to get the lobotomy and turn gay before you apply? Or maybe that will all be provided as part of the training? Either way, thats a pretty piss poor amount to be paid to become one of the most hated people in the country

Western Australia Stagea Get Together.
Stinky Rooster replied to chuckie's topic in Four Door Family & Wagoneers
OK peeps. Here it is. Just to reitterate, this is NOT a cruise, just a meet and greet. There will be families and kids there so appropriate behaviour would be appreciated. meet point is at the parkland just north of Trigg Beach http://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=-31.87475...009345&z=17 As you can see, the car park is more than visible from the BBQ area so you can all eat sossies and bask in the glory of Teh Pulsar Fury at the same time -

that depends on exactly how cute you are. He's a pretty discerning chap, is our Chuckie How about a family style BBQ at the Western Power playground at Kings Park this coming Sunday (August 8) http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=q&sou...=14&iwloc=A If nothing else - you up for a sossie burn chuck? -
Timing Belt Dramas... Car Wont Start :(
Stinky Rooster replied to chef_stagea's topic in Four Door Family & Wagoneers
Basically, you wont be able to tell anything with the head on. Take the head off and remove the cams. As Nick said, any valves that dont sit all the way closed are going to be bent at the very least. Another good diagnosis trick would be to mount the head on a stable flat surface and fill the combustion chambers with water, leave for 20 minutes and then see which ones drop in level - these are the ones with suspect valves, although the RB engine does have a pretty high level of interference and I think most damage is going to be rather self evident. Also take a really long hard look at the piston crowns and bore condition around the tops of the cylinders. The piston crowns are what will actually do the valve bending, and this usually dislodges any carbon build up in the area - especially if an exhaust valve has copped a hit. Carbon deposits floating around a combustion chamber cause hotspots, preignition (pinging) and generally score the hell out of anything they touch, but damage caused by this is usually quite easy to miss to the untrained eye, so take your time, and try and get a mate or two to go over everything a second time, just in case. Head gaskets - unless you are running uber high boost, have a massively ported head or huge cams, I would stick pretty strictly to the std head gasket. Felpro and the like do good quality aftermarket ones that wont break the bank, but raising or lowering the compression ratio on a turbo engine can lead to some pretty significant changes in your engine, and most of them arent good. Raising your compression will get you on boost quicker, but the increase in running temp, combined with the need to pull timing out to stop pinging will see any gains eaten up pretty quick, and lowering your compression ratio will allow you to crank up the boost at the turbo (if you have a hi-flow or big aftermarket jobbie) but the increase in lag, and drop off in low end torque, will kill the joy of driving. -
I dont vote for anything I havent yet seen, so in the spirit of the competiton.. show us your pussy!

The Car Always Going To A Side When Hands Not On The Wheel?
Stinky Rooster replied to ryan_perth's topic in Western Australia
hell yeah. With the castor and camber work done to the front, when the CV's were put in the alignment was knocked for 6, hence me not wanting to drive it afterwards until you guys had weaved your magic. See you again in a couple of weeks -

+1 for WA suspenders. Had them knock up an alignment for Teh Fury yesterday, and was forced to stop twice on the way to home so I could get out and roll naked across the bonnet. I dont think the chick at the drive through coffee place will ever serve me again though -
I am down for a Perth ride - I have even given up smoking after 19 years, so kinda interested to see what sort of effect it will have on my fitness...
