  1. So how much is the freight to NZ and back? How much are you willing to spend on the bottom end?
  2. Good advice Darren but can you let him know $$$ wise what he is in for just to machine and assemble the bottom end including pistons and bearings. Remember his turbo is only rated to 250rwkw.
  3. Do you expect the builder to do a good job if you are paying $2k for machine work and labour? In another month you will start the thread "Is it normal for a built motor to be noisy and blow smoke" and then your money pit will be for sale for $3k with a dud motor.
  4. Ha, that's what pussy whipped guys say. Happy for her while you cringe at what u have just given in to... I'm sure if she knew how much money will be wasted she would be a little more un happy!
  5. Can you please write down what each option will cost you and study the numbers a bit. What is the engine builder charging you to machine and assemble the bottom end?
  6. Your absolutely mad for building a forged motor for 220rwkw. Put some stock pistons in and be done with it. Why would you listen to your wife when it comes down to building an engine?? Is she a mechanic?
  7. Unfortunately there is a lot more to it than that. Will they spend the time get all the tolerances spot on? There is a difference between putting an engine together and building one properly. Your head is done and can be bolted on to a stock bottom end. What power is your turbo meant to put out? Heaps of guys are running 300rwkw on stock bottom ends with no dramas as long as the tune is in order. If it lasts you a year or 2 then buy another bottom end as the head will still be fresh. You really need to listen to guys on here that have done it all before. You haven't spent any money on the bottom end yet. How much do you think it will cost after you buy the pistons??
  8. This is exactly what i was thinking. I'm going through this myself with my Nissan Patrol. I bought a built motor and a 180,000km stocker (not that high km for a big low revving 6 cyl and only $150) . Both are now pulled apart and the stocker is in so much better condition. All the hone marks are still there and everything all in spec. The built motor has turned out to be a crap and not built well at all. If everything is done right and by some1 who knows what they are doing then yes the built motor will be a better option and be more reliable but that will cost you $$$
  9. What exactly have you done to your engine so far? Has all the bottom end been machined up?
  10. You have gone from a budget turbo upgrade to a forged rebuild. If you just want reliability now that you have some news, why aren't you just putting a stock motor in and just tuning it to a nice reliable power level and leaving it at that? You will get none of this back when you go to sell it. I hate to be negative but it's still not too late!!
  11. I'm pulling down a tb42 (4.2l 6 from a Patrol) and noticed the oil bypass valve in the oil filter housing is damaged!! Does anyone know how to replace this valve. I have another tb42 sitting here that i can swap it over with. Does the whole housing come off??
  12. Ahh ok, my bad! What does the machinist say? What is getting done.
  13. I just quoted myself but this guy got offended and STILL asked the question again after it was written there in front of him!
  14. Harden up sunshine. How do you get offended by ppl explaining things properly the first time so you don't ask the question again. Turn the boost down a few psi......free!
  15. What is the point having a 4' intake if the afm housing is 3'?
  16. I would be wedging some serious insulation between the 2
  17. I had them up to 1mm at one stage and did not notice or feel any difference except the miss up to which was costing me power. I honestly don't think there is a difference in power and response between 0.6 and 0.8mm gap.
  18. Think about what you just said. The biggest YOU CAN. If he can't run 0.8 then gap them down. Even with brand new OEM coils i was missing with a 0.8 gap. Now at 0.6 they are fine. There is nothing wrong with a slightly smaller gap. Do you think going from 0.6 to 0.8 will magically give you another 50rwkw and half your fuel usage??
