My experience as a 23 year old modified R33 GTR owner, the no accident history with a rating 1 certainly helped getting a good price :)

Torque under 30 (for GTR's)

Ryno - must have owned a previous high performance vehicle for 2 years

Sun Corp - u/25

Vigil aka Unique U/25 or under 30 for GTR's (I think)

Shannons - garage only

Young and Cool aka Famous - knocked back on electronic application but offered over the phone. Any modifications to engine internals (eg. injectors) or turbo or wastegate and no more insurance...(at least for myself). Slightly cheaper than Just Cars and GIO (by $100), much lower excesses.

Just Cars - Very good price but $2900 excess

GIO Custom Car - Very expensive until they agreed to meet and beat the Just Cars price and offer a better deal.

AON - No Imports

GIO Customs were excellent on the phone and happy to beat Just Cars quote and do a better deal, there policy is also not restrictive and there excesses are expensive but a little less than Just Cars, about $2600 in an accident or $5000 for a non-listed driver but they came out on top and I've taken insurance with them.

Just thought id add to this thread, i just called shannons for insurance and they quoted me $2130. Im 26 with rating one with no accidents, speeding tix etc. 1996 R33 series 2 with just and exhaust as a mod. Damn sydney. Just cars seems the cheapest so far at $1750.

Any other reputable companies who insure imports in sydney? Or would the new GIO custom cars be the last resort? havent called them yet.

Torque insurance, ryno insurance, famous insurance, young and cool. They all do imports and price there premiums well but they are somewhat small institutions and not to sure what there claims procedures and experience would be like. Whether they would look for absolutely any excuse not to pay out.

my experience is this:

shanons is the best. but bear in mind they are a specialist insurer. so if you are 23 and have a 33 GTST that you drive 20,000kms a year to and from work every day, and it's mostly parked on the street they most likely wont cover you (which is good as you would be a high risk). if however you are 26 and have a mint VspecII R32 GTR that you drive less than 5,000kms a year and it's always garaged then shanons is the company for you. and since they don't insure really high risk customers (like my example above) your premium will be competitive.

I have been unfortunate enough to have to make a theft claim with shanons. they were tough but fair. They conducted their investigation into the theft and interviewed me etc and to be honest it was the worst weeks I've had in recent memory, but once they had exercised due diligence they promptly paid the claim. and I'm glad they fully investigate claims as otherwise they would be paying out to some fraudulent pricks out there and my premiums would be going up because of it.

also, never lie about anything to an insurance company. ever. if you should ever have to make a claim it could bite you on the arse. so be as honest as you possibly can.

Supercheap is now offering insurance... has anyone looked into it, I coulnt get a quote for the GTS1 via the website.

I'm with shannons, (and not gunna change!)

R31 GTS1

agreed value of $6500,

2 drivers @ 23 - 1 on red P's

paying about $750pa.

Yeah beer baron, I agree with you and I think shannons is one of the better insurers but $2100 a year for a GTS-T on limit use of 2 days a week is kinda steep. I wonder if the lady who quoted me typed in GTR not GTS-T.

yeah I can't comment on your premium. but let me say this. let's say you get a premium somewhere else for $1000. but if they are a shady company and don't pay your claim, or give you shoddy repair then that $2100 would suddenly be looking like very good value.

it's like buying clothes on sale. the shirt you really want is not on sale and costs $200. but there is another shirt, not quite the same style and the size is a bit too big. it's only $50 and reduced from $200. you may say the $50 shirt is the bargain and buy that. I say it's a rip off, because it's not what you want. I'd buy the $200. because even $50 is too much to pay for a $200 shirt you didn't want to buy.

holy crap some of you guys are gettin massive quotes, hows ya driving history? im 19 had no accidents/suspesions/claims n got quoted $2080 full comp with Just Car for a lightly modded r33. still debating whether to go ahead with that or $495 for 3rd party fire n theft. only down side with JC is that its an upfront payment. .no monthly installments.

As said before, a differing postcode, vehicle type, age, garaging situation, driving history, modification level, financial situation (financed vehicle) etc can have an effect on a premium so unless 2 people with all of the above matching one another, then i doubt you will ever find 2 premiums to be the same. so unless your willing to give all the above details and possibly more, then there is no point coming on and simply telling everyone how cheap your premium is when everyones circumstance is different.

I think telling people about your claims experience would be more handy, as at the end of the day you are paying a premium on the chance a claim arises, and how that is handled should be taken in to consideration.

makes big difference!!

move from sydney - say post code 2010 to say, bathurst - 2975 (I think?)

you'll save shitloads

then again, move into QLD even cheaper again.

Which has more risks...

big city...(heavy traffic, vehicles stolen, high accident areas)

small country town....??

I just rang a heap of places for a quote on my r32 gtr (i said i will be driving the car once im 21), justcar offered me $2600 ( i used to pay 1400 on my gts-t when i was 19) never in a accident never had an infringement, live in greensborough.

Famous won't insure under 25's in a Twin turbo car

Ryno now does classic cars only, not performance jap cars, with the exception of current insuree's

Famous won't insure under 25 in a gtr

GIO wont insure under 25 with high performance

So yeh, pretty much it's justcar or nothing..

anyone inerested in cheap insurance call HIA insurnace on 98087224 contact AVEDIS, mention my name Mirko and youl definatly get cheap insurance.

let me know your success stories, he will insure anycar.

Hi all, I'm planning to get a 34gtr next yr and i'm currently doing research for all the expenses that will incur. i've done up an excel sheet for all cost cept for insurance and rego. i'm from singapore, 25 this yr with a clean driving history, however, my license was only converted this year after i got my PR. i have been staying in brisbane for the past 2.5years with postal code 4122, car will be garaged, driven mostly on fri/sat/sun as i'm working during wkdays and dont wanna risk parking outside, working as an engineer. never own a car in australia but driven (friend's). any help will be much appreciated.

    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
