RB20_ZED
To cut a long story short. Was driving today and the car seemed to accelerate without me making it. I pushed the clutch and pulled it into neutral and the engine reved quickly up to 9000 by itself and stayed there until i was able to cut the power to the fuel pump (luckily i have a kill switch). Im guessing that the accelerator cable got stuck but it seems fine and im worried that it could be caused by something else - maybe turbo/boosting related? I wasn't driving the car hard at all when it happened. what would cause the engine to spike to 9000 revs and stay there? besides the accelerator cable/pedal getting caught or stuck. my car seems fine now but im scared to drive it without knowing what may have caused it since the cable doesnt seem like it had anything to get caught on. any help/opinions would be appreciated. Cool Hand Luke
i've had a loose throttle cable slip off when the throttle was half open and stick like that, then be back in place by the time i stopped the car and lifted the hood. If the throttle body is closed, the engine cant rev. It has to be the throttle sticking somewhere Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/124044-car-got-stuck-on-9000-revs-without-me-doing-it/#findComment-2290029 Share on other sites
paulr33
throttle cable would be the only likely culprit i could think of. the throttle body would have to stay open for that scenario to have occured Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/124044-car-got-stuck-on-9000-revs-without-me-doing-it/#findComment-2290031 Share on other sites

RB20_ZED
thanks both of you. just needed the reassurance that it had to be the cable somewhere or other. R31Nismoid
Or a hose. I had some hose get loose and get jammed in the throttle body. I forgot to use a cable tie after i was changing the plugs or something and it moved in the way. No harm done Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/124044-car-got-stuck-on-9000-revs-without-me-doing-it/#findComment-2290125 Share on other sites

Was mid burn out, started getting out of shape, backed off.... hose says no. For reference, its not lucky you have a kill switch, everyone should be aware you can simply turn the key off, throttles getting stuck is not that uncommon, don't panic, just turn the key off. Careful with the key, too far and you will be dealing with the steering lock. R33fourdoor
Careful with the key, too far and you will be dealing with the steering lock. Don't you have to take the key out of the ignition before the steering locks? R31Nismoid
Or just go up a gear, 4th to 5th and jump on the brakes till you cna sort out turning the ignition off. Thats what i had to do as i wasnt sure what was going on. It isnt good for the car, but the rev limiter is there and does the job, but better than getting too outta shape. I'd rather f**k a clutch than have somethin bad happen Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/124044-car-got-stuck-on-9000-revs-without-me-doing-it/#findComment-2293307 Share on other sites
Dee 33
My story is good. The same thing happened to me. Nailed it at the lights and then the throttle jammed open somehow, car rocketed down the street, evetually switched it off and rolled to a stop. Upon inspection, the f**king trumpet from my GFB Bov had unscrewed, and jumped across the engine bay coming to rest under the throttle lever leaving it wedged fully open I made sure I screwed it on extra tight afterwards. Seriously though, what are the chances of that? 2rismo
Kill switch is a great idea. No steering lock to contend with, no turbotimer issues. **JaR**
Don't you have to take the key out of the ignition before the steering locks? dont think so, if the cars off and you move the steering wheel to far to either side it'll lock it with the keys still in the ignition.
