I think this topic has come up before, and no one had done it back then. Personally I don't think it would be worth while. You lose your boot space, your fuel consumption increases, your power levels decrease. For a custom system on a skyline, I'd guess the cost of install vs. the fuel savings would take 2-3 years to pay itself off, which in my mind isn't worth the loss of performance and practicality.

I think by and large, owners of skylines have resolved themselves to the trade off of premium fuel prices and amount of use, with the fact of owning the car itself.

Read= If you've bought a skyline, fuel prices aren't your first priority.

Doesn't anybody listen to our politicians and in particular, little Johnny himself?

LPG is a panic attack idea when oil gets expensive, but as is the current situation, little Johnny is throwing $2000 at us to convert to LPG, but there is about a 9 month waiting list to get it fitted to anything, let alone a Skyline.

The biggest problem facing a conversion like this is it's compatability with the stock ECU and not all cars are compatible.

My 1UZ for example, is not compatible and anything fitted with any UZ engine, I know not Nissan, (Landcruisers etc with 2UZ & 3UZ) they have not yet designed a compatible system for this engine derivative.

Now! getting back to the man, little Johnny, he has been making noises for the past 3 years about placing the excise that's on petrol, onto LPG, so in time your going to be paying nearly the same for LPG as petrol, so WHY WOULD YOU BOTHER, when LPG burns so much hotter, as it's dryer and you use 20/30% more in quantity.

its also like 103 ron fuel and if setup and tuned correctly can run better and hell of alot cleaner. also ghosterider there are several soarer v8's in the eastern states that have dedicated gas setups and a few cars with 1uz conversions running gas too. sure there all custom but nothing is impossible. it all comes down to who u know and how cheap u can get the install done

You can do it, they're doing it to XR6 turbos in SA using pretty advanced LPG injection management system coming from Italy.

Get a hold of issue 101 of Zoom, its the June issue for 2006, theres an article about it. The place in Adelaide who can fit them is called Adelaide performance Engineers ph: 08 8277 5688

As has been said, Why would you bother???

The point I was trying to make, apart from compatability is this.

Conversion cost, no matter how or where is about $2000.00 and as LPG burns so much hotter, irrespective of octane rating, it uses more fuel by about 20% and therefore, for the average person it's going to take 2 or maybe 3 years to recover the cost of the conversion and by then, IF the libs are still in power then, you can bet your ass that the excise will be on it and the price will be much the same as petrol per litre.

In the article, they were able to make more power with LPG, and also overcome the increase of fuel consumption by running the LPG in a similar fashion to that of a normal fuel injection system. Apparently the current common design for LPG systems is based on a design founded in the 1950's and is similar by comparison to a carburettor type set up, so as you can gather - is quite inneficient by todays standards.

Having said that, im not an expert on the topic, and am only re-iterating what I can remember from the article :)

I remember something about a standard option in xr6t's where you could purchase an LPG only version from factory. Had different pistons, slightly worse k's per litre as with all gas machines and had slightly less power but lasted muuuuch longer than any conversion ever will... gas converted engines seem to always need rebuilds muuuuch sooner. but admitedly this is based of 2L conversions the old man an I did on some toyota's, read multile hiace vans a few ford taxi's 1 4.1L s pac and 3 * 4L a somethings and a izusu light truck. also had a few done by other mechs an they were pretty practised on half and full conversions which did last a few years.

personly id love to run a few experiments with a decent "gasresearch" setup.

id love to money permitting, be able to go twin 510cfm carbs.

last time i was looking the biggest gas injectors u could get were like 93cc which are equal to like 400cc petrol injectors. so unless u ran gas injection and richend it right up with say a 500cfm gas carb.

i dunno its all theory atm. im still trying to get my mate to set up an account with gas research and there suppliers, which would enable access to all the prinz gas injection parts.

    • Next on the to-do list was an oil and filter change. Nothing exciting to add here except the oil filter is in a really stupid place (facing the engine mount/subframe/steering rack). GReddy do a relocation kit which puts it towards the gearbox, I would have preferred towards the front but there's obviously a lot more stuff there. Something I'll have to look at for the next service perhaps. First time using Valvoline oil, although I can't see it being any different to most other brands Nice... The oil filter location... At least the subframe wont rust any time soon I picked up a genuine fuel filter, this is part of the fuel pump assembly inside the fuel tank. Access can be found underneath the rear seat, you'll see this triangular cover Remove the 3x plastic 10mm nuts and lift the cover up, pushing the rubber grommet through The yellow fuel line clips push out in opposite directions, remove these completely. The two moulded fuel lines can now pull upwards to disconnect, along with the wire electrical plug. There's 8x 8mm bolts that secure the black retaining ring. The fuel pump assembly is now ready to lift out. Be mindful of the fuel hose on the side, the hose clamp on mine was catching the hose preventing it from lifting up The fuel pump/filter has an upper and lower section held on by 4 pressure clips. These did take a little bit of force, it sounded like the plastic tabs were going to break but they didn't (don't worry!) The lower section helps mount the fuel pump, there's a circular rubber gasket/grommet/seal thing on the bottom where the sock is. Undo the hose clip on the short fuel hose on the side to disconnect it from the 3 way distribution pipe to be able to lift the upper half away. Don't forget to unplug the fuel pump too! There's a few rubber O rings that will need transferring to the new filter housing, I show these in the video at the bottom of this write up. Reassembly is the reverse Here's a photo of the new filter installed, you'll be able to see where the tabs are more clearing against the yellow OEM plastic Once the assembly is re-installed, I turned the engine over a few times to help build up fuel pressure. I did panic when the car stopped turning over but I could hear the fuel pump making a noise. It eventually started and has been fine since.     • It was picked up on the MOT/Inspection that the offside front wheel bearing had excessive play along with the ball joint. It made sense to do both sides so I sourced a pair of spare IS200 hubs to do the swap. Unfortunately I don't have any photos of the strip down but here's a quick run down. On the back of the hub is a large circular dust cover, using a flat head screw driver and a mallet I prised it off. Underneath will reveal a 32mm hub nut (impact gun recommended). With the hub nut removed the ABS ring can be removed (I ended up using a magnetic pick up tool to help). Next up is to remove the stub axle, this was a little trickier due to limited tools. I tried a 3 leg puller but the gap between the hub and stub axle wasn't enough for the legs to get in and under. Next option was a lump hammer and someone pulling the stub axle at the same time. After a few heavy hits it released. The lower bearing race had seized itself onto the stub axle, which was fine because I was replacing them anyway. With the upper bearing race removed and the grease cleaned off they looked like this The left one looked pristine inside but gave us the most trouble. The right one had some surface rust but came apart in a single hit, figure that out?! I got a local garage to press the new wheel bearings in, reassemble was the opposite and didn't take long at all. Removing the hub itself was simple. Starting with removing the brake caliper, 2x 14mm bolts for the caliper slider and 2x 19mm? for the carrier > hub bolts. I used a cable tie to secure the caliper to the upper arm so it was out of the way, there's a 10mm bolt securing the ABS sensor on. With the brake disc removed from the hub next are the three castle nuts for the upper and lower ball joints and track rod end. Two of these had their own R clip and one split pin. A few hits with the hammer and they're released (I left the castle nuts on by a couple of turns), the track rod ends gave me the most grief and I may have nipped the boots (oops). Fitting is the reversal and is very quick and easy to do. The lower ball joints are held onto the hub by 2x 17mm bolts. The castle nut did increase in socket size to 22mm from memory (this may vary from supplier) The two front tyres weren't in great condition, so I had those replaced with some budget tyres for the time being. I'll be replacing the wheels and tyres in the future, this was to get me on the road without the worry of the police hassling me.
