Thanks for the input everyone, TT I totally agree a terratrip is a lot cheaper than putting a new front end on the car :) I guess I'm just trying to see how much it will really help keep me on the black stuff.

I'm a novice driver, Kel's a novice navigator so I don't want to spend money I don't have to.

Having said that, the more I ask and research the surer I am that I should grab one (probably 202) just to give ourselves the best chance of getting back in one piece.

We're also going to be buying notes not doing our own (no time for a full rece and we'd have no idea anyway). I guess the main thing is to get as much practice on reading (and listening) to notes as we can.

t01-100, I didn't realise you worked for those guys....guess I didn't get the answers wrong then lol!

Duncan, I question the buy notes not recce routine - but each to their own. Even with notes it takes a while to trust them... Our notes, Vandenbergs, or the Rally Notes for that matter differ slightly - and you may quickly decide a better way for you - so I would try and do as much recce as time permits. Our notes have a distance at the begining of each line.... my missus used that as a check and got bent and twisted when the probe went south... My current nav doesn't fall off-or so he says (yet), and rarely uses the terra in stage, but has many signs, trees, and posts to reference our position.

Anyhow, t01-100 has plenty of spares if you "rooster" up...

As I said, the dirt rally guys would be a good place to beg borrow steal one - mine is actually on loan from one of our previous sponsors.

Not long now - bet you can't wait.

My experience is with Vandenberg notes, as TT says they provide reference points - signs, trees, power poles, power lines (crossing above) ect - therefore no need for distances.

A greater number of cars than you would think don't use distance devices, but handy for not getting lost on transports!

Hold off on buying notes dunnycan. As you well know Mel and I have contacts for all things cars. We will ring around and see what we can come up with in the next week or so.

Neil.

#832... Well Duncan, t01-100 waited till I used up all the bad luck then issued it to someone else. Good number with top 25 and class winning history.

A few new and reverse stages this year which will mean notes have not been used at speed on those stages. Recce advised!

All the best and if you think 4 months is a long time - it aint!

Ciao

hahah I am expecting to be pretty flat out between now and then getting my..stuff..together.

I thought 832 would go nicely with my normal race number (32) and figured you wouldn't be needing it now you joined the dark side....so I was lucky to get it....hopefully like you said any bad luck has been left behind - I need all the help I can get.

I don't think Jimmy is staying awake at night worrying about how to beat 832 :D

Do any of you guys have experience with the Monit TC100 (info sent with the last newsletter)? Same price as a terra 303.

Hunt the junkyards and old rally magazines Dunc. Someone will have an old Halda lying about :D

And just tell Kel to lean close for the navs. Could do wonders for the relationship.......

Seriously, talk to the gravel crew. There is so much noise in a rally car with stones banging underneath they will know the cheapest and best. After 15 years rallying on a budget with no sponsors you get used to second hand and chasing bargains.

Just checked out their site ... looks fine You find something on this forum

Ciao

I have nav'ed in Targa Tas, & nav on dirt all the time. I have only ever used/needed a Terratrip 202,(& old school Haldas!) never really had any issues. The probe being hit by rocks & knocked about abit has happened a couple of times on the dirt though. Most of the top guys use Terraphones for comms, but there is a few people using Peltors now.

You can definatley drive faster with notes, but we only used the RoadBook for Tas. The driver(my brother) figured it would be better to drive it how he saw it, not how someone else saw it, and we hadn't had much to do with notes before so we just stuck to what we knew.

Driving to finish is more important than driving fast all the time though... It worked for us, 1st in class & a Targa Trophy!

ps try looking or posting a wanted ad on www.bmsc.com.au

maybe www.rallysportmag.com.au too

Well Dad and I just got a car for Targa, and we need a comms system (car came with a terratrip 202).

Do the headsets fit in existing helmates? Or do you have to buy helmates with them intergrated?

    • Hi everyone, I've been wrestling with this for a while now and have been trying to find out the cause. For context, the turbos used are Garrett 2860 -5s, the BOV is a BNR32 HKS SSQV IV kit, the car is currently tuned to ~470 whp on 17.5 psi. The car drives normally, pulls well when it doesn't happen, and I can replicate it fairly easily. It does not sound like turbo shuffle or flutter. The engine has only a thousand or so miles and has had this behavior since it was completed. After my engine was built for my R32 GTR, I noticed that the car now sometimes makes an air discharge sound on what appears to be positive boost pressure that sounds really similar to a BOV. I had thought that it was a BOV issue but even when replacing it with a brand new unit, the sound persisted. It seems like it's coming from the passenger side but I may be mistaken. The closest scenario I could find was this post here https://www.gtr.co.uk/threads/maybe-a-boost-leak-opinions.147955/https://www.gtr.co.uk/threads/maybe-a-boost-leak-opinions.147955/ started by @yakshii and it sounds very similar. As in, at partial throttle once I reach positive boost I begin to hear the same psh psh psh psh psh sound like air is leaking somewhere when I keep the throttle in the same position. It most commonly happens in 4th gear at around 3-3.5k RPM and 5th gear around 2.5-3k RPM, which seems to coincide with normal positive boost thresholds. It might be similar to what @Austrian GTR mentioned about his own HKS SSQV. Notable difference would be that when he applies more throttle when it happens, it stops. In my scenario if I apply more throttle during this repeated psh psh psh sound, the cadence of the sound gets faster and louder rather than stopping. If I lift off slightly and apply throttle again, it will normally stop and pull without issue. I've checked all rubber couplers to ensure that they are tight, but have not gotten the opportunity to properly do a pressurized boost leak test. If anyone has had similar experiences or thoughts on what might be the cause, I'd be very keen to hear them. I also have a video of it happening from inside the cabin, if that would make it easier to understand: https://youtu.be/2zqZXcx8jbA
    • I'd want at least $40K for mine, but thats easy to say cos I'm not selling anyway.
    • That's incorrect. We have 4 seasons, consisting of pre winter, winter, post winter and a small glimpse of hope!
