Hahaha Cubes, i eased it to 4000RPM then gave it a hit... same as the other video... She goes real well compared to many other R33's and R34's that i have raced, some with more mods then mine (EBC, PFC, FMIC) hehe

Cheers

The vid where you said a rolling start in second r34 side mount full 3" exhaust etc...

You accelerated from a really low rpm in second and held it right out. Well I couldn't hear it punch. :verymad:

I saw the other vid where you went first short shift in to second, held second out then pinned it at what looked like ~4000rpm.

n/a like is good.. means its spooling early.

The top end looked nice. :)

I miss being able to rev mine out. Head needs to come off and that should be sorted. :O

Yep i got a full 3"... Split dump ----> 5" s/steel CAT ----> 3" cat back ------> resonator half way ------> 6" Cannon

is the resonator a 'torpedo' type, straight thru? or a big ass rectangle one?

Its an off set straight through resonator so that you don't disrupt the flow... but it elimanates the excess noise....

Yea cubes, it spools so smoothly... 10 psi by 3000RPM... before the R34 SMIC it was a sudden rush of boost and nothing down low... its so much better now!

Sarkis

i didnt think you'd get such a good result from the stock r34 smic. well done. now i am considering doing the same instead of fmic.

i wanna see what type of resonator you've got coz i have to add one to my exhaust.

off-set means it's not straight thru. straight thru would be the torpedo or bullet shaped one.

Hey Guys, the video's were recorded in mp4 format and wouldn't upload onto SAU i had to change the file extension to .mpg for it to work... if you guys try and open it into real player they will work.. or download any divx codec pack and will work in windows media player...

Just a reply to Nismo God, i am planning for big power in the future, however until i am financially ready for a larger turbo + rebuild + injectors + fuel pump .etc. the R34 SMIC upgrade will give you the full potential out of the stock turbo and setup... these SMIC's have been known to hold anything up to 14psi and 200 - 230rw/kw which is more then the stock turbo, injectors and fuel pump will ever handle... so in my opinion, full exhaust + boost control + R34 SMIC + PFC will give you the maximum and most reliable tuned power out of a stockish R33... and wont break the bank.. Not to mention will not give you any issues with the boys in blue as a FMIC would :(

Cheers,

Sarkis

BINGO! I think this type of tune is a great way to get started.

Hahaha no problems Tony!

Here is a quick vid i took tonight trying to capture the sound of my exhaust... tried getting a shot of the cannon but it was too dark... hope you like!

Good work Sarkis, I'm glad my SMIC helped. :) You owe me a ride now showing how well the car goes. >_<

For those wondering what difference the car makes when going R34 SMIC to FMIC:

- I noticed the car pulled harder through to redline

- Throttle response seemed to be the same, that is; there was no extra lag (or it wasn't very noticable) between stepping on pedal and car picking up revs accordingly

- Turbo lag however, seemed to be slightly increased. Meaning it took slightly longer for the turbo to give that 'rush' feeling but when it came it came on alot stronger where as it was hardly noticable before

Thanks Nismoid! Always a pleasure in contributing to the increasing knowledge off Skyline performance..

Hey Andy, Yep all went well thanks and ill do better then a ride, ill give you a run  hahahah jk buddy, for sure we should organise a cruise soon..

thanks for doing that. it sounds great. nice and deep.

mine sounds similar, but since the highlow cat there's also a bit of drone in the cabin. other's in my car havent noticed it, but i'm a bit picky about stuff like that.

here's a vid of mine.

Sounding good Tony! Im sure any decent resonator half way will get rid of the drone and yet maintain a deep note as mine has... I get no drone in the cabin, just enough rumble to know your driving a skyline  hehe

  • 1 year later...
Hey Guys, thought to share this with you... i just installed an R34 GTT SMIC onto my R33 GTST and boosted to 10psi + ECU Reset

Current Mods: 3" Split dump + 5" S/Steel CAT + 3" CAT back exhaust + Turbotech

Results: Car comes onto boost MUCH smoother & revs to redline MUCH easier.. there has been a HUGE increase in pull through out the rev range especially in 1st and 2nd gear... Dyno would be nice, any one offering a free dyno pass? lol

Recommendation: Definitely worth the upgrade if you have stock turbo... Proior to this upgrade, the car felt held back and restricted, now the car feels much freer and has noticably unleashed more power... Throws you right back in the seat :/

Note: Prior to the SMIC installation, i flushed it with degreaser/hot soapy water and i couldn't believe the amount of black crap that came out! had to reflush about 4 times before it was 100% clean... then ran warm water though to get rid of the soap/chemical residue... i then stuck an old hair dryer in one end and let it sit there for 30min untill it was drip dry.. worked a treat!

Look at the size difference between R33 SMIC Vs R34 SMIC!

Here is a couple short videos while driving home tonight, its just to show the smoothness of boost and ease of rev... (excuse the bad footage due to holding my phone while recording and driving) Hope you like!

Hey mate, where did you purchase your r34 GTT stock intercooler, I tried to find it on ebay but no one selling the stock one. By the way, I have another question here. I have r33 gtst with 3A racing pod filter and kakimoto catback but stock dump and catalytic converter, at 3000 rpm the boost is about 0.5 bar and 5000 is about 0.7bar? Just wonder why the boost is so little ? Is that normal or should I get a boost controller and what do you reckon mate? cheers!

    • Hey Dave, welcome aboard! Good to see another soon-to-be Stagea owner here. The wagons are awesome — plenty of space, still got that Skyline DNA, and loads of potential if you’re into mods. Definitely post up pics when you get it, everyone here loves seeing new builds. What model/year are you looking at?
    • See if you can thermal epoxy a heatsink or two onto it?
    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
    • So, what else.... Power. I don't know what it is making because I haven't done a post tune dyno run yet; I will when I get a chance. It was 240rwkw dead stock. Conclusion from the day....it does not need a single kw more until I sort some other stuff. It comes on so hard that I could hear the twin N1 turbos on the R32 crying, and I just can't use what it has around a tight track with the current setup. Brakes. They are perfect. Hit them hard all day and they never felt like having an issue; you can see in the video we were making ground on much lighter cars on better tyres under brakes. They are standard (red sport) calipers, standard size discs in DBA5000 2 piece, Winmax pads and Motul RBF600 fluid, all from Matty at Racebrakes Sydney. Keeping in mind the car is more powerful than my R32 and weighs 1780, he clearly knows his shit. Suspension. This is one of the first areas I need to change. It has electronically controlled dampers from factory, but everything is just way too soft for track work even on the hardest setting (it is nice when hustling on country roads though). In particular it rolls into oversteer mid corner and pitches too much under hard braking so it becomes unstable eg in the turn 1 kink I need to brake early, turn through the kink then brake again so I don't pirouette like an AE86. I need to get some decent shocks with matched springs and sway bars ASAP, even if it is just a v1 setup until I work out a proper race/rally setup later. Tyres. I am running Yoko A052 in 235/45/18 all round, because that was what I could get in approximately the right height on wheels I had in the shed (Rays/Nismo 18x8 off the old Leaf actually!). As track tyres they are pretty poor; I note GTSBoy recently posted a porker comparo video including them where they were about the same as AD09.....that is nothing like a top line track tyre. I'll start getting that sorted but realistically I should get proper sized wheels first (likely 9.5 +38 front and 11 +55 at the rear, so a custom order, and I can't rotate them like the R32), then work out what the best tyre option is. BTW on that, Targa Tas had gone to road tyres instead of semi slicks now so that is a whole other world of choices to sort. Diff. This is the other thing that urgently needs to be addressed. It left massive 1s out of the fish hook all day, even when I was trying not too (you can also hear it reving on the video, and see the RPM rising too fast compared to speed in the data). It has an open diff that Infiniti optimistically called a B-LSD for "Brake Limited Slip Diff". It does good straight line standing start 11s but it is woeful on the track. Nismo seem to make a 2 way for it.
