The land of goat sphincter rings GRAND PRIXVIEW - UNDERSTANDING PRESS RELEASES

22 August 2007 | 8:35pm

You've had two weekends without a grand prix so here is a handy Red Bull Dictionary to remind you what all those Press Release quotes really mean: a useful Red Bullshitometer to keep with you throughout the race weekend. And don't blame the press officers, because you have to remember that the Press Release is the only thing they produce that their team bosses and you, the media, actually recognise as work! So, without even pausing to optimise our issues, please read on:

"We have no plans to change any of our drivers in the near future."

Means: "We plan to change one of our drivers on Monday after the race."

"The car retired with an electrical failure."

Means: "The engine seized, threw a piston and con rod through the side of the block where it cut through the electrical wiring loom, causing an electrical failure."* *If you run a customer engine, under no circumstances can you have an engine failure.

"We do not know what fuel loads the other teams were running in qualifying."

Means: "We are in deep trouble because we are slower than the others, but actually it's worse than that because we are much, much slower than them, as they have enough fuel to run ten laps more than us at the start of the race."

"But the car has very good pace in race trim, so we should be okay for the race."

Means: "Our car is just plain slow, but if we are stuck in the middle of the pack with no chance of overtaking, we can claim we had a competitive car and no one will know we are lying."

"We knew our car would struggle on this type of circuit."

Means: "Our car would struggle on any type of circuit made up of a tarmac road surface laid out with straights and corners."

"I have a very good relationship with my team-mate."

Means: "I am comfortably quicker than my team-mate."

"I have a good working relationship with my team-mate."

Means: "I hate my team-mate. I call him my 'team-hate.' He can't even remember the names of his mechanics, he does hardly any testing, and yet he just turns up and drives the car and is quicker than me. He also has a much prettier girlfriend."

"A difficult first day of practice which saw us struggle to find the right balance on the car. We still need to complete our tyre comparison programme."

Means: "The car is a complete pig and the only balance I'm ever likely to find is the one in my bank account. As for the tyre choice, we'll toss a coin in the hotel bar tonight to decide which one to use."

"Next year, we should be able to challenge for race wins on a regular basis."

Means: "We said exactly the same thing last year, but hope no one will notice that we are repeating ourselves."

Of course, none of these comments refer to Red Bull Racing or Toro Rosso press releases, which are always honest, decent and truthful.

Could they make them sound anymore gay?

dont misread or mispost information.

This is where you will find the exact McLaren statement.

It was copied and pasted directly from an article on the Official F1 website. I didn't misread or mispost. :(

Go Massa! pole position good work :bunny:

lets hope Kimi can knock off Hamilton and it can be a Ferrari 1,2 :P if not i want Alonso to smash Hamilton!! and take back the championship

also interesting read about

ëcclestone keen to see Schumacher return

feck the lot of you.

im IBTL as mr ct jet likes to proclaim.

..screw it and him.

im mortified. LH had it sewn up and the bloody tyre decided to pack it in...ffs.

I know i know. KR and FA had similar days. yeah? so what?

LH is a future 10 X WDC winer and you all know it.

FM is driving the car MS has honed the last 10 frickin years and he cant manage the same feats as LH is doing this year.

I dont want to hear blah blah this and blah blah that.

LH is going to be champ this year and i like to see anyone bet against that.

Im mortified..

man you guys are slow...race finished half an hour ago..

anyone up for a download of the event? PM me if youd like to see the race from another "angle".

The WDC is tightening up. I really believe LH has the goods to seal this one just as he did the GP2 WDC last year at the dying moments. I rate him higher than anyone on te grid at the moment.

Rattled FA in a way no other driver as, put KR and FM in the shade at the best of times, shown the "pack" a clean set of heels.

you can say, Mclaren car this and Mercedes money that...none of you guys can deny LH's irresistible WDC appeal...

ummm..yeah im biased..doesnt change a ting..hes going to win whether you like it or not..

GO LH! :) :)

M3gtr, you may have raised some valid points..... But I was hypnotised by your sig and didn't read any of it. Sorry.

I actually want Fernando to overtake Hamilton in the points. It'll either make or break Lewis. If he's as good as the British press say he is, then it'll be worth seeing, if not, well, then it's always fun to make fun of the poms when they get so close.... yet so far in any sporting event.

Wheres the emoticons for snore on this site?

Kimi was SOOO much faster than Massa, if he's been on pole, he would have won it by a country mile. And if Massa had to circulate in second im sure Lewis would have caught him. Nando lucked out big time, im sure he was as happy and Massa was at the end of the race.

I really want traction control ASAP, this 'racing' isnt as fun to watch anymore.

Side note: well done to kovalainen, Fisi is so 100% gone at the end of this season

so i'm assuming. massa 1, kimi 2, alson 3, heidfeld 4 and hamilton 5? i switched off 15 laps from the end. apart from wathcing the on board through turn 8 (possibly the best corner in the world) the race was actually pretty boring.

go Ferrari!

well done Massa

sucks to be Lewis ahaha! didn't have the pace to keep up with the Ferrari, and ctjet not sure what you are on about :3some: But Massa was fast and i dont see anyway Lewis could of catch him as he just didnt seem to have the pace of the Ferrari

Also not sure what happen to Alonso :D just didn't have any pace good to see some luck come his way and i hope he jumps back into form and kicks Lewis butt!

dont you mean youre waiting for it to be gone at the end of the season?

if you dont like the sport go watch NASCAR or something..

    • Sounds like you've got an interesting adventure ahead here with local support if you have trouble! My guess is that, unboosted, you will be OK with a small upgrade like -9. What will happen is that once the stock ECU sees more airflow than it expects it will add a heap of fuel and pull a heap of timing to be safe because it can't understand how it could get that much air without there being an issue. You will see clouds of black smoke and it won't pull hard through the midrange and top end. So, overall it will be a bit frustrating but should be OK. If you are still nervous set the base timing back 2o through the CAS, but it will be even more sluggish everywhere. As said above through...this is not my guarantee your engine won't be blown into a million pieces, leaving you looking for very hard to find parts A better idea is get a computer with logging ASAP, wire in a wide band O2 sensor and a use remote tuner. I've done multiple cars this way and while it is not as good as a specific tune on a dyno they can get it 90% right. I'd suggest if you can afford an R33 GTR these days you can afford an ECU and tune. And if you can't afford that you sure won't be able to afford the rebuild if it goes bad in the meantime,.
    • Yeah it would be nice if someone took the time to put that sort of information together, but there are a lot of variations in looms. I think you are making this way hard for yourself if you just want to get it running....sourcing an SR20 with the right wiring will be a billion times easier than matching the RB loom to an S15 chassis. If you do end up going this way, you just need to trace every wire in the loom with a multimeter, 95% of them will go to a location you can confirm at the ECU.....and then post it up for the next person who needs it
    • Just top it up with water, and keep a general idea of how much you added. It is normal for water to be pushed into and pulled out of the reservoir through the cap, and it should not be more than half full or it will be likely to overflow when hot. Any decent mechanic can do a pressure test of the cooling system to confirm if you have a leak. Keep in mind if it is only leaking a little and when hot it may well evaporate before you see it hit the ground
    • I'd ask the shop what they used and use that. Mixing coolants is sometimes OK, sometimes not, and you have know the details of each coolant to know whether it's a good idea or not.
    • Is it alright to top up with just another green coolant?
