what's the deal with people who paint their bonnet black?

i assume its to replicate the look achieved when someone gets a CF bonnet...

but really, it just tells everyonethat you can't afford a CF bonnet, but want to fit in so much that you paint a perfectly good panel black for no reason!

i wanted to see what SAU thinks of this because it is bocoming a huge trend these days... and personally i think its completely ghey.

end rant.

cheers,

Warren

the panda look... or as I'd like to call it... the "mega cool initial d super fan" look.

either way its for ricers with shallow wallets. ricers with deep wallets pay for 50 layers of fibreglass with 1 layer of carbon on top.

It was initially done by race cars so that there was no reflection off the bonnet...

So no, it's was not a ricer option in the past.

Maybe it's being done to look 'cool' now, but it actually serves a practical purpose, especially when the bonnet is matte instead of gloss.

same reason why you don't trim your dash in creme leather (well unless you like to be distracted by the sun off the dash).

:(

The old man restored an L34 SLR5000 that he picked up from an old lady that had it sitting in her shed.

650 holley, nice lopey cam that would pulse through the floor pan and seat. Simply nothing like the awesome raw feel that thing had.

Black bonnet, and 'Canary' (rings a bell) Yellow. :(

So in some cases.. It does look good.

I had a CF bonnet but cause of constant defects now have a stock one painted black, I painted it black because i dont mind th elook of black bonnet on white. Also the stock bonnet i go tot replace my CF one was metalic blue, so i though tit would be better i painted black than try and match the white DIY style. :P

I saw a white WRX this morning with the black bonnet and all the vents and scoop were white. Could only think "tool".

I used to paint the bonnets of my Mack trucks matt to keep the glare down, but that was like 5 acres of reflection. There is nothing "rice" about 17 tons of heavy wrecker.

its a throw back to the ol' Charger days of 71' Vitamin C orange with the black bonnet and fender stripe....soo cooool then....so lame on modern cars.

Personally nothing beats clean factory lines with original paintwork.

My old mans 1969 Mach1 Mustang has a flat black bonnet, it came like that from the factory. Wasnt till now that i know that they did it to keep the glare down when racing. I had always wanted him to get it resprayed with a gloss black but now i know the reason behind it the flat black will have to stay.

    • I've got a 2011 J50 that I imported six years ago. The unmodified factory AV system date and time has always been correct ( Japanese timezone of course ) up until last month. About two weeks ago, at engine start, the system wished me a happy new year ( in Japanese of course ). I can't think of anything that would make the system think that the date had changed, unless the GPS component has failed/reset somehow ? I checked the GPS reception in the system settings, and it can still see the satellites. Has any other J50 owner had this happen ?  It's no biggie, just annoying that it tells me the wrong date anytime I start the engine. 😅
    • Love following your adventures on IG, hopefully if you're still around in Japan when we visit again wouldn't mind going for a few beers with you (that's if you're keen on hearing how I hate Nissans).
    • ok so if i wanted to go 18's i would go for 8's  in front 30+ or 32+ off set at front and the back 9 would be ok? what offset should i aim for.. then can i do some  hunting for wheel rim choices..    If i get this - will this fit all around: Size: 18 x 8.5 +37 - n what tyres size tyre should i get for front n back?
    • Absolute f*cking nightmare. I had to take breaks constantly, and I was always pissed off when I got home. The line split in Italy on day 2 (we drove from the Netherlands), lol. Driving any narrow European town was... well, sh*t.   Appreciate it man. Here, I'll just drop a favourite from the load I took on Saturday.   I'll update here when things happen with the car, the thing is, with stock power and almost everything chassis-wise taken care of, there really are no problems. 268,000kms now and counting.
    • Ah! I actually managed to snag a lightly used set.... that aren't so suitable for me right now. They don't work on a GTT without some cutting or creative heat moulding. I thought about reselling them myself cause I didn't want to murder them, but it looks like I'm probably going to attempt to murder them/melt them because I may as well. @GTSBoy @PranK can somebody close this thread?
