I know you said you wanted to be different... but WHY? What is the point of hacking up a perfectly engineered car like the 350Z?

There has been so much engineering gone into the 350Z with little details like CF drive shaft and you want to rip it all apart??

Also to the guy that said the RB might make the handling of the 350z worse is incorrect unless you have factual evidence or data to back that claim up.

weight. Clear and simple. It can be compensated for, but the handling won't be as good as if didn't have the extra kilos.

Anyway, I am curious - do you want the engine or the drivetrain MORE?

My 2c - from where I'm sitting, the murano package makes much more sense on paper. Should be easier to adapt, lighter engine, still 4wd, and cheaper.

Of course, if your heart is set on it... (like I have an R32 because thats what I wanted, despite being 2L with slow 4wd), achieve the dream.

Yeah, that'd be me. I'd be incorrect because hanging a longer and heavier engine/diff/shafts etc over the front wheels that could weigh 30 to 100 kilos more than original (double and some for pounds champ) will have no effect on the handling...... Yep, I'd be wrong.

I think it has been done many times before.

In fact just before the gtr35 launch top-secret had one to stick the finger up to Nissan.

They also slapped the 3.5 350Z Motor into a gtr with Turbo's

Shabs....you need to look at what you are after first...before you experiment with the

thought of it. :D

Or on the other hand get some custom panels to make a gtr look like a 350z :P

The data is in the physics.

Replacing a compact all aluminium V6 with a long cast iron inline 6 pushes your centre of gravity forward. The 350Z already has a front biased chassis, so your car will be even more nose heavy. What do they say about the handling of front heavy cars again....?

The VQ35DE already sits half way between the strut towers, so the RB26 is going to have the vast majority of its mugh higher weight in front of your axle line. And that's before we include the weight of the intercooler, radiator front driveshafts, front LSD, etc which you've had to push forward to fit in front of this engine. There goes your polar moment of inertia.

Then there's the suspension, which has also been engineered with a specific weight balance in mind and you've just gone and f**ked about it. Its not just the spring and damper rates - the entire geometry will no longer suit. There goes your handling.

You keep crapping on about the Zele car. That was built for rallying, by a big engineering house with connections to Nissan and Nismo engineers in Japan. You've got a couple of apprentice wrench monkeys from a dealership on your side, and we all know how......qualified.....your average dealership mechanic is when it comes to working outside the company three-ring binder.

The Zele car is going to want to oversteer, because that's how they design rally cars to work. And with a surfeit of power, its not difficult to get it to power over. In the BMI video, it was quite taily, especially under power. And since Zele has Nissan factory support, they'd have access to guys who could reprogram the ATTESSA processor and calibrate it for the different weight and distribution of the new car.

And, to be quite honest, BMI isn't the be-all and end-all of technical knowledge. If you have a look at their various battles, they'll line up stock cars in multiple races and get multiple results. In some cases you can tell that they're "pulling" faster cars back, especially if the edition in question is about that vehicle.

I remember seeing one Tsukuba battle where the Supra TT beat the NSX, R33 GT-R, FD3S, etc. Another video, the NSX comes out on top. Of course, the GT-R can nevar lose in another vid. All on the same track, all dead stock.

If you're building a car for Hot Import Nights or some other car show, just import a GT-R wreck and use a big mallet to make the stuff fit. Of course it won't run, but when you've got the car raised up on a plinth so everyone can see your AWD driveshafts and the bonnet raised so they can see your chromed engine cover, everyone will know you're hectic. You could just connect the rear wheels up to the engine, so you can win the dyno comp "in RWD mode, for less drivetrain loss", and you'd have the perfect "different" dyno queen show pony.

The G35x (which we don't get in Australia so few people here know about it) would be even easier still.

Its a V35 sedan (so same platform as the Z33, making transplanting a lot easier), but the engine is mounted longtitudinally like in the Z33 and has ATTESSA ET-S.

Its a shame I can't find the flash video of when the V35 came out on the Infiniti site. They show the different modes it works in. Off the line it uses a 25:75 F:R split for maximum traction, which shifts to 0:100 when cruising. In "winter mode", the power split is 50:50 off the line. The system, like the GT-R's ATTESSA, is also dynamic. It'll shift power front and rear depending on the grip, so it'll turn-in, power out, and hitting loose surfaces like feel like the GT-Rs we're accustomed to.

If I had big budget, I'd import a G35x and rip out its drivetrain for my Z33. I'd twin turbocharge the engine if it would physically fit, but otherwise I figure a VQ40DE out of a Pathfinder being inducted by a Stillen Roots-type supercharger would give me plenty of get up and go.

There are some subtle differences int he setup, im pretty sure the sump bolt pattern and everything else would be the same. Meaning the tranny n shit would more than likely bolt straight onto a VQ35DE in a 350z... mating it up to an RB26 is gonna be another thing entirely.

^^^ 350z specs as opposed to the Murano... seem pretty similar to me.

Confirmed by wiki, same engine used in all the models specified some minor differences between the two, majority of parts are interchangeable :(

i would expect the murano VQ to be torquier since it'd be used as a tow vehicle/commuter. rather than a GT car.

I dunno in terms of "specs" if thats the case, but having driven one, they are much the same as the Ford Territory VS the BA Falcon. Same engine, different car, almost identical feel.

Im looking at buying a 350z Track Edition as my next car, have test driven a few, and the guy next door has a Murano. Same sporty feel as the 350z obvioulsy in a much sort of bulkier car but its still very sporty and nippy if that makes sense. Same deal with the Territory and BA... seems like most manufacturers are going for that kind of combo these days, smaller AWD/4WD cars that feel the same to drive as normal commuters.

Now to make it AWD easily, cheaply and hassle free thats the million dollar question.

There project was completed in Oz here that is similar but the conversion was to a VL Commodore. So i dont think it will be that hard. Will be alot of mix-and-matching but once its all sorted. .. What a beast! :laugh: good luck with the project.

yeah but theres more room around/in/under a VL, and the VL also would have more genetically in common with a skyline than a 350Z, ie: bolting up the engine and bits of the driveline would be very easy

I have fitted several different engines to the z33. Ive done the VQ40 from the pathfinder and also the 35th engine into my own maxima.

I have also done the RB26 into the Z33. Whilst getting the engine in is no big task getting it to work with the Z33 chassis and body systems is a nightmare. The vehicle I did now has fully opperational VDC with the RB26 and the CAN bus opperated perfectly besides the ECM section. The suspension needed a complete revamp as the entire car felt soggy on the track and was struggling to lap wakefield in 1.15's.

It now laps all day everyday in 1.06's and is pleasent to drive.

With the Attessa system being interfaced into the Z car you will be needing the entire ABS system from the GTR and ALOT of knowledge about the system. Your buddy may know how to fabricate but thats honestly the least of your problems come time to get it working properly.

In all honesty work with what you have OR buy a GTR. The end result will be so much better to drive.

... and that was completed by a very experienced engineering shop, and I recall reading that over 3000 man hours were required. (And a VL would likely be one of the easier vehicles to transplant)

That's a long time if you're doing it part-time :P

has everyone forgot abuot the top secret tt kit for 350z ??

300kw on 8psi which retains stock eng? man if you need awd I have NFI about hte murano but if its already designed for the vq go with that, bigger, newer tech mottor THAT ALREADY FITS and you get a VERY unique car that would probably handle a few high rpm luanches depending on murano drive train. You could probably use aftermarket items since your money pit seems bottomless anyways.

300kw's on 8psi with good tune on stock internals isnt something to sneeze @. admitedly the turbs in the front quaters doesnt look very practical for an every day street application but this doesnt sound like its much of streeter to begin with. talk about your cold air intakes though eh.

Ill have to find the mag I got this out of... prolly something real reputable like HPI or something... all i can remember was the turbo placement was ablsolute shit house but the 8psi @ 300 RWKW was something i didnt forget.

I would love to drop the Q45 motor into my XTrail .Now this would be fun..does anyone know if it will fit. :P

    • Yeah, it's getting like that, my daughter is coming over on Thursday to help me remove the bonnet so I can install the Carbuilders underbonnet stuff,  I might get her to give me a hand and remove the hardtop, maybe, because on really hot days the detachable hardtop helps the aircon keep the interior cool, the heat just punches straight through to rag top I also don't have enough hair for the "wind in the hair" experience, so there is that....LOL
    • Could be falling edge/rising edge is set wrong. Are you getting sync errors?
    • On BMWs what I do because I'm more confident that I can't instantly crush the pinch welds and do thousands of USD in chassis damage is use a set of rubber jacking pads designed to protect the chassis/plastic adapter and raise a corner of the car, place the aforementioned 2x12 inch wooden planks under a tire, drop the car, then this normally gives me enough clearance to get to the front central jack point. If you don't need it to be a ramp it only needs to be 1-1.5 feet long. On my R33 I do not trust the pinch welds to tolerate any of this so I drive up on the ramps. Before then when I had to get a new floor jack that no longer cleared the front lip I removed it to get enough clearance to put the jack under it. Once you're on the ramps once you simply never let the car down to the ground. It lives on the ramps or on jack stands.
    • Nah. You need 2x taps for anything that you cannot pass the tap all the way through. And even then, there's a point in response to the above which I will come back to. The 2x taps are 1x tapered for starting, and 1x plug tap for working to the bottom of blind holes. That block's port is effectively a blind hole from the perspective of the tap. The tapered tap/tapered thread response. You don't ever leave a female hole tapered. They are supposed to be parallel, hence the wide section of a tapered tap being parallel, the existince of plug taps, etc. The male is tapered so that it will eventually get too fat for the female thread, and yes, there is some risk if the tapped length of the female hole doesn't offer enough threads, that it will not lock up very nicely. But you can always buzz off the extra length on the male thread, and the tape is very good at adding bulk to the joint.
