From the amount of threads on the subject, half the p-platers driving restricted cars are not even aware of these rules.

I swear to god, if I hear this one more time - "Im on my p's, I drive a 33gtst, I was just driving along, not doing anything wrong and I got pulled over......" - FFS - you are doing something wrong - DRIVING THE CAR IS ILLEGAL!!!

I drive in QLD and it aint illegal for me :)

It shits me that all you older people love to categorise all p platers as dickheads on the road, with no respect for the laws blah blah blah which is complete bs.

Many do the right thing and deserve to drive their cars they have worked long and hard for even if they are high powered.

No my parents havent paid one cent of my car and yes they know its high powered.

And dont start with my parents are irresponsible for letting me drive it....

its a numners game

you might be a champion driver... but the next 14 p-platers that drive past will be completely useless. So the government makes rules with no exceptions for the overall good of the population. Its another case of cop it on the chin like a man and move on

if you are driving a car which the law says you can't drive then you have no respect for the law. if you did you wouldn't be driving that car.

guys bit late into this debate but when i got fined for driven a car over power to weight on p's that was it just a fine and I had to leave my car on the side of the road no demerit points have laws changed??

Call up the idiots at your local transport authority and ask

It may change from state to state

Im over it now cause im off my p's literally was driving my mates vt ss for about 10minutes cause he had a few too many drinkies..he paid my fine so was all good :) the cop that pulled us over was actually really good and understood the situation..told me he'd love to do something but the laws the law..i understood havin ran into trouble before he also mentioned it was a good thing I chucked some p plates up alot of drivers get strapped with 2 fines cause they dont display p plates to look inconspicous

if you are driving a car which the law says you can't drive then you have no respect for the law. if you did you wouldn't be driving that car.

But its not breaking the law directly such as speeding, drag etc and its not dangerous to myself or others. If i mind my own business and drive normally chances are i dont get pulled over.

I think tougher penalties for doing the wrong thing would be better, its just a bit unfair to ban all because of the actions of a few.

It would be good if the police werent allowed to pull people over if they werent doing anything wrong too.

Then the people obeying laws wouldnt cop revenue raising fines and defects, and can do what they want to their car without anyone knowing.

the problem is that some of these driver training places teach too much, or too well. and then you get the rev heads and it just increases their confidence so they do even more stupid stuff on the street.

Well I totally agree with that!.. Its obvious .. Im young and think like a young person .. If I did driver training i'd know how to do everything 10 times better and i'd do it .. And with that .. monkey see monkey do! so all the copy cats would follow .. you get the drift

In regards to high performance vehicles, Im on the green p's and I got my reds prior to the laws comming in. So Im allowed to drive high performance. When I got the R34 I thought sweet like any car (Ive had a 325i M3 and c3 :S) so ive been around.. Its not - the R34 kicks the m3's ass in handling braking and steering however it lacks in the rev range, but all these new features just enhanced my need to push the limit, and not knowing the car I took several risks (off roads) in finding these limits..

The moral of the story is, P platers shouldnt drive high perfomance because most are like me.. stupid, have a need for speed and in-experenced. I feel driving in a less powered car is a good way to work up to a high powered car as I wouldnt have been able to drive out of some of the situations ive put myself in without being in those other cars first.

Theres another L law for u .. Drivers must drive in at least 2 cars of different power/weight and performance.. gives them a better unstanding of cars..

Jibbering finished

r32 gts-t r turbo but so u cant drive em.

In VIC he/she can drive it.

I have an R33 GTS-t, I'm on my green Ps, I drive it legally (I don't have restrictions) also, I'm in NSW.

From what I've read, you loose your licence straight away, fair fine on it, there's also the fact the car could be taken/towed, you also have no registration or insurance whilst driving with restrictions in a restricted car. Hence, you hit someone, your f**ked for life if you do some severe damage.

I was, at a point in time, being pulled over for random breath tests (and licence checks) and honestly, I can't blame the coppers since it is a restricted car for most P platers.

I drove quite a few cars before getting the 33 (Owned an old ute *still do* and a VR Commodore, plus drove multiple friends cars) and seriously, I was still unprepared for how the turbo car handles and drives. I'm still learning another 9 months or so on, plus doing skid pan days to learn more, and seriously, on the road, these skid pan days are making me drive more like a cat (Very cautiously!)

If you drive it, and you're restricted, and you don't get caught, you're bloody lucky, but the day you have an accident, you'll be reemed in the ass for the rest of your life.

Oh, and it also goes on your insurance history for 5 years, so once you get off your Ps, if you've been done, you have that problem with getting insurance...

I drive my 32 gts-t on my red P's in nsw

Legally of course coz ive got no restrictions, i got my license in 04' n lost it for a little while so the laws dont apply

Its kinda strange coz i dont get pulled over as much as i thought i would, but they always follow me for a little while.

Probs doing license checks.

But of the few times i have been pulled over, ive had one occasion when the officer was nice, the rest were kinda grumpy that they couldnt book me

If you drive it, and you're restricted, and you don't get caught, you're bloody lucky, but the day you have an accident, you'll be reemed in the ass for the rest of your life.

Im with him, its just not worth it

Most definately not worth it!

But take the risk if u like...

I was driving with an expired licence then saw the consequences...

*Even longer without licence

*fine

*chance of being towed

*higher insurance

*criminal record.

I now just sit on SAU and read all the articles to gain more and more knowledge on these awesome cars until i sort it out...

Take your car to skidpans, drags and track days if u want to drive it... then u have something to look forward to every fortnight or so...

If it was me i would buy a VT commodore, drive it for 3 years. then u got your full licence. sell that in 3 years time they will prob be worth 5-7K and u will have saved money then to. Then skip the GTST and go for a GTR :)

Get a low low mount turbo on an N/A registered car, water injection no intercooler, they'll never know. Just keep it subtle and keep the induction noise to minimum. My idea for my brother when he gets his license after the new Qld laws come in.

Um, you're a fool

He's then driving an unregistered car (If you're unlicenced/restricted, you registration is null and void)

You also have no insurance

If you think they won't find out, they will.

I know SOO many people who've been pulled over just because they took off a bit, the turbo spooled, and they were near an unmarked car. Fortunately for them, they were legally allowed to drive the car.

You have an accident, and hit something like an old school show car (Old Chev, Mustang, Monaro, etc) or hit a Merc, BMW, even just a Commodore, and the price to repair them is insane, you then have to pay for it out of your own pocket, you have no car, no money, and huge fines, and the possibility of being sued, plus a criminal record.

Hit something like an old car, or a high end car, and you can be up for over $50 000, hurt someone, and you're f**ked for life.

It's purely not worth it.

Oh, and the police/insurance companies go right over cars after they've been in large accidents.

Edit: And so people know, I thought I was a good driver, that I could handle my car decently (I couldn't chuck it around drift etc, but I could handle it)

And to an extent, I beleive that I can control my vehicle on the road, better then alot of P-platers, and am quite aware of going ons around me too.

Now I took up an oppurtunity around a week or two ago, to go out with Autosports to OranPark Skid pan, and chuck the car around, and I tell you what, it scared the shit outta me, how little I really did know on car control.

So, don't be a twit, save your pennys, save your regrets, hold off, go do some driver courses, then get a skyline if you still want one later on.

New P-Platers can all complain and whinge about the laws and try to find ways to bypass them but the fact remains that driving the car in question is illegal, and has been made so for a reason. Regardless if you think you are a good driver- the laws have been put in place for a reason; the fact that younger drivers in high performance vehicles are generally over-represented in the road toll figures, and the road toll in general. You are at your most vulnerable when your first start driving by yourself, and really all these laws do is protect people from themselves.

So if you choose to drive a restricted vehicle, you not only risk losing your licence/car but you will also not be covered by any insurance you have on that vehicle. Is it really worth it? Why not wait a couple of years until you have some experience under your belt. You have an extremely high chance of regretting it when you get caught.

im on greens (in NSW) so i dont have restricitions on driving my r33 gtst but its still a pain in the ass cos i get pulled over everytime i sit in my car. I dont speed or anything and the cop always says im just pulling you over to do a licence check, fair enough but then it gives them an excuse to do RBT, defect checks, i get my number plates checked to make sure car isnt stolen etc.

it takes like 30min everytime and i am always late for work. i Have to leave 30min earlier than normal and its bloody stupid.

Its getting to the stage of harrassement!!!!!

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways.
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.
    • Damn that was hilarious, and a bit embarrassing for skylines in general 😂 vintage car life ey. That R33 really stomped. Pretty entertaining stuff
    • Hi, I have a r32 gtr transmission. Does any of you guys have an idea how much power it will hold with the billet center plate and stock gearset? At what power level and use did yours brake with or without billet plate? Thanks, Oystein Lovik
    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
