I took my R34 to Top Racing about a week and a bit ago.

Paid them to install an Avcr and SAFC.. I had already done all the wiring for both, but paid for the loom etc to be put through to the engine bay and the solenoid and pressure sensor installed. AND THEN A TUNE

I figured paying for it meant less effort for me.. too lazy

anyways..

they said the solenoid on the avcr is busted. and they could only tune the safcII on 6psi factory boost.

Told me to get another solenoid and then they can retune it

Anyways a week and a bit later i went through the whole install myself. shortened the run of vacuum hose and relocated the pressure sensor to a different location as the book said keep the hose as short as possible. I also ran 12v over the solenoid... it make clicking noises... AKA...it was WORKING

thats all i changed.

then i went through the avcr itself. vehicle settings were correct.

but the main thing... THE SENSOR SETTING was wrong.

once i set that.. the solenoid was ticking away happily and the boost reading was coming up nicely on the display etc.

perfect..

So my question is..

Do i take the car back there and ask for a retune on higher boost FOR FREE as they did not install the unit properly.

I feel like this is the right thing for me to do. I paid for 3 hours worth of labour and then an hour of tuning.

for an install that wasnt done properly in the first place..

any advice.

I would think, that if you pay for the job you are entitled too ask them to tune the ebc for free, as they were incorrect not you. And im guessing they would have tune the ebc at the same time they tune the safc so the cost of tuning wouldn't have increased.

I would say your best bet is to go down and talk to them in person and see if they are willing to fix the problem

Cheers Michael

aaah good.

this is my intention

I really wanted to check if it sounded unreasonable.

I went there because of all the positive feedback so i hope they will come to the party.

anyways in the meantime i fried the headunit of the avcr.. plugged it into the safc plug.. complete noob thing to do.

sooooo.. anyone not using the headunit for a day i would like to rent one for the tuning...

I am happy to pay someone to use it for the day

so if anyone is a weekend warrior and not using their line for a day or 2.. drop me a PM.

1 more thing... Who actually does the tuning at Top Racing.

oh and HIPSI....crossed my mind SO SO SO many times.. but seriously.. these guys get a great rap on this forum.. and this is why i went in the first place. My requirements are simple compared to the types of machines people need tuned. I reckon they will come good

no point using someone else's AVCR to tune it, as when you unplug it, it wont be controlling the boost, and doesnt the control unit store the settings anyway? thus erasing the owners settings, and you will need to get it re-done when you get yours fixed/replaced.

if the AVCR, is like any other ebc, there will be only a few settings (4 if i remember correctly) gain etc etc...

You can just write down those values, get his car tune for the higher boost (copy down the values for his boost setting) then just give it back and put the old settings in

If you have blownen up one head unit, that does not give anyone good confidence to lend you theres!

There is only a few main settings on the AVCR, but the self learn mod sets about 10 points per boost setting and people will use at least two boost settings, so it not realy a simple fix.

yeah i know... the confidence..

if its a plus.. the safcII is plugged in safely.

leaving only 1 spot free for the avcr... *CHEEZY GRIN*

hahahaha

Michael is on the case so I will retract the request for borrowing.

I will have a replacement head unit shortlyish

then its off to top racing for a negotiation

anyways on a brighter note... when the avcr did work before i decided to relocate it... car was super happy.. i completely forgot the rush of boost from my old series II

the 34 tiptronic is so smooth and linear that i forgot what i was missing..

higher boost is the new black right now

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
