my GTR has dropped an AFM, apexi pfc tells me so and the trust pod kit on the car is crap atm, I have cleaned up the AFM's and one is still dropping out.

as I am looking for a power increase at the moment and this area has let me down I am considering options for the intake side of my quite stock brn32.

come forth and impart your wisdom as I need it now to help tame my ever cantankerous GTR

What mods do you currently have?

The stock airbox is good for into the 300rwkw range if you put a decent panel filter in, not some cheapie

I would go that way but its all been removed prior to owning the car, reason for mentioning pods is bacause its whats on it at the moment, so basic bolt fit remove/replace.

the car has 3" exaust, cam gears, PFC, and pods.

not looking to go to crazy yet but the pod setup that is on the car is not in the greatest condition and as I understand if I use RB25 or Z32 airflow meters the pods have a different fitup so I would need to upgrade them at the same time

I JUst had my 32gtr flo meter playing up for a while. ie.. losing power off/on, bad idle etc.

I recently found it to be the rear meter, and its still in workshop getting an

Apexi D-Jetro power FC fitted; the one that dosnt require the flow meters at all,

so hopefully illiminated the prob completly and allowed for max flo allong with

a new set of apexi pods and custom piping.

Should be good, hoping to get her back by this w/end.

Go Nismo..direct plug in and bolt on..no mods..are cheap now every where....

Wish some one would have told me before I bought the RB25/20 type...but then again..these were like 400+freight not long ago

Horray for the Aussie dollar...

$366 ea delivered isn't quite what I would call cheap. A little less (ouch!) expensive maybe..

I am in the same boat as Betz, having to replace the worn out M's pods and the afm's.

The options for me as I see them are:

1) pods with rb20/25 secondhandies.

2) pods with z32's

3) pods with nismo afm's

4) replacement stock airbox with nismos.

5) haltech or pfc d-jetro (with pods or airbox as well) (local tuner prefers haltech)

opinions?

If you are complaining that $366 delivered for brand new Air Flow Meters is expensive, you shouldn't be playing with a GTR.

Well a brand new Z32 airflow meter is around $310 rrp in Australia so when you factor in adaptors for the electrics (say $40) and the adaptors/reducers because they're not the right size (80mm vs 60mm) and you're not really saving yourself any money by going Z32. It's a coin toss and the Nismo's win in my book for looking stock and requiring less stuffing around and being bugger all more in the long run.

Second hand AFM's... Well an RB20 AFM could be 16 years old and they aren't exactly known for being beacons of reliability so you're buying into an unknown. RB25 AFMs are getting on a bit too. I personally think RB25 AFMs are a downgrade of epic proportions since you both have to stuff around with piping size and get next to no more resolution.

In my opinion it should go:

1) Nismo AFM's with standard airbox.

2) Z32s with pods

3) There is no number 3

Yeah, GTR stuff isn't cheap. It costs more than a R32/3/4 gts-t/gt-t in every department. So $366 ain't bad at all.

what about RB20's? is the z32 afm also a good option?

ive also read somewhere that a gtr afm can be used as an upgrade...

is this correct? what would you knowledgeable fellows suggest?

With what ECU? I'd say if you have an AP PowerFC then Z32 would be the best bet. STD RB26 would offer next to nothing for you. Unless you're already maxing out your current AFM (i.e. reading 5.1v well before you've reached peak power) then why would you change it?

Apexi make a nice pod filter set up that bolts to the Z32 AFM's. It includes the plugs you need to splice into the loom.

I have that kit + two Bosch AFMs, which with a cover work nicely.

If you know just about anyone in a trade they should be able to source the Bosch gear at a discount or trade rate. They are a direct equivalent for the Nissan items, just cheaper.

Cheapest upgrade uption is still some Nismo AFM's however.

the best and cheapest way is to go nismo afms, and either use the stock airbox (if you have one) or get some apexi pods.

zennon, the GTR AFM is a downgrade on an RB20. the only real AFM upgrade for an RB20 is a Z32 AFM.

Thanks guys - the ECU has apparently been remapped but for all I know it could still be stock (seller did lie about other things). As for maxing out current AFM - I'm not sure - don't know what it is reading since i have no way of telling but i think my car has an airflow problem as it feels like it hits a wall when it reaches 5000rpm. It has a 3" turbo back exhaust so I think the restriction must be the AFM - further more the 5000rpm problem is worse in the day time and on very cold nights when the air is very dense it goes away all together. (car has pod with stock turbo and running 11 psi) (have SAFCII lined up so ill get that before AFM and when car was on dyno the AFRs were stable...)

I do understand what you are saying. What I am trying to decide is the most economical use of my cash, for the best practical result.

Using the original filter box isn't an option either because I'd have to purchase one, M's only on here when bought.

The thing is, If I am paying that for the nismo's, and then more for the filters and adapters, I feel that z32's offer the same result for less outlay, and are available in australia..

Then the other option is the haltech e11v2 or the pfc d-jetro, plus filter kit, as I need a new ecu (only running stock atm) and the price comparison between pfc + afm's, pfc-djetro and haltech is as nearly the same.

the best GTR intake pod kit is the blitz 26024. when i had my gtr i did a comparo (advantages of having stockpiles to rumage through) between the trust, apexi, kn and blitz and the blitz was the only one with a measurable advantage over the rest...most likely due to the supplied plenum type afm adapters, the kn ones actually tested quite poorly agaist this bunch. 80,000kms later and the filter has no adverse effects on anything.

this is the 26024 http://www.blitz-uk.co.uk/ProductItem-173.aspx

don't the Blitz filter small rocks at best?

nah it is suprising, even after neglecting the filters on the gtr and checking the inlet tracts after about 20k (the only reason i got worried was because they re-did our road and a full fortnight of travellng on gravel had me stressing) but they were spotless, we just upgraded to T517's and the compressor blades are still as new after 80k of total usage...

this is only rumour but i hear zoom and hpi are about to release their filter test results and have got some myths to bust :P

dropped the afm's to the auto sparky today, he is going to cut the covers off and re soldier the connections, I'll then test it and see if it is still munted..

If I have a dead one then I spose I'll open my wallet again and fork out for some nismo ones and a pod kit, nengun lists the apexi bnr32 kit for $197 + delivery.

looks like 2 minute noodles fortea again tonite :P

    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day   Highway gets as low as 10l/100km on my end so I'm not as worried about it being a mechanical issue. More likely just the tune on the haltech.
    • While I was waiting for the new parts to come in for the charge pipe and radiator I decided to do some turbo modification. The drive pressure (exhaust backpressure) was a lot higher that I thought it should be. For 32lbs of boost drive was 55lbs. The turbine housing is a 1.10AR and my turbo builder has suggested to go to a 1.25AR. To test if a larger AR would do anything to reduce drive pressure AND not spend any money I decided to hog out the divider in my current housing. I removed it from the inlet and the whole way through the housing.  After reassembly and testing it doesn't look like this modification did anything for reducing drive pressure or requiring more fuel (making more power). Oh well, it was worth a shot. We'll get some data at the track if it makes it past the 60ft. I also machined a $7 shift knob off Amazon to fit my Stillway shifter since I didn't like the Stillway shift knob. Next on the list was the radiator replacement and fabrication of a new intercooler tube that had no silicon coupler. No pictures of this - I was short on time each night after work to get this done and didn't stop to take pictures.  Next was to get the clutch disks out and replaced. Previously when installing the dogbox I had ordered a set of the same sintered iron disks I had been running because I switched to the 26-spline input shaft. I thought it was odd that they didn't have any markings or brand name on them like all my old disks had but installed them anyway. At the track I could not get the clutch to lock up using my normal strategies. After two track nights I reached out to the clutch manufacturer and ask their thoughts. They said they had to switch the material out because they were having trouble getting the original material and that this new material would not take to being slipped very well.  So out with the first set of 26-spline disks and in with the correct material 26-spline disks. While I had the trans out I added an inspection/service hole. I've wanted one of these for a while. Now I can have a look at things and change the front cover shimming when needed (clutch wear). I hustled and got the clutch change done in a few hours on a Saturday. Hopped in the car and drove home. On the way home I did a 1-3 pull. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd the core plug in the back of the cylinder head popped out and dumped all the coolant. Thankfully I was only 30 seconds from home and coasted it there. Datalog showed nothing unusual and 2.5psi of coolant pressure. That plug has been in there since 1992 but I guess it worked its way out. Pulled the trans AGAIN and replaced the plug, JB welded it in, and made a brace. Also deleted the head drain I had added in during the bearing issue fiasco.  I am currently changing my boost control plumbing to make it cleaner. After that is done I'll make another attempt at getting past the 60.
