As for TopGear, its fun but I'll more then likely only be watching this year too. I'll try and compete in only the JDM rounds at the QRDC events this year. Would be nice to have more contenders this year though. The most JDM cars entered last year in one round (other then MX5's) was about 9 I think, 6 or 7 of which were WRX's and only 1 of those actually lasted to the final race on Sunday. A couple didnt show, another blew a box, another blew an engine etc etc. Would be nice to see some of these fast Skylines and S13/14/15's out there.

I'd still like to get involved in that, but after a run at QR I have a few issues to work through before its anywhere near ready to circuit race. Main ones being overheating after just a couple of laps and turbo flange studs/nuts coming loose. But with the car running like a dog and only on 14psi it ran a 58.23 on the Sprint track on 3yr old Toyo RA1s, so the old Datto shows a bit of promise. I've also made a few suspension changes after its first visit to a proper racetrack - before this it was all hillclimbs which are much lower speed and didn't really show up just how soft the suspension setup was. The car just about falls over in turn 2 at QR!

Yeah but it weighs about the same as a large pizza from Domino's too :)

Do you have an oil cooler of some sort on there? If not, get one but don't get a chinese one unless you dislike your engine. The cooler might be ok but the oil lines are poor quality rubber. Saw one in use on an R33 with big dollar engine where the rubber was falling apart and blocking the turbo oil feed. This caused the bearings to collapse and the turbo to die, followed by the bearing parts travelling to sump, being eaten by the dry sump pump and so on... Chinese hose cost bigtime.

hey harry

have you looked at the type of material for being used for your turbo studs?

i only ask as we were having the same problem once. it turned out to be the material the studs were made of , they were turning to jelly when hot and stretching,

i thought they were using genuine studs and they werent! the turbos nearly fell off!!

Inconel studs are your best bet :P ...not cheap but no chance of stretching at temps

thanks for the tips guys. I've just replaced the studs with Sonic studs (mild steel) and metal-lock nuts. I really only bought them because they had the metal-lock nuts - I have no idea about the quality of the stud material. I always use genuine flange gaskets, but never thought about sourcing studs from Nissan. If it happens again I'll go looking for inconel studs. where did you guys source them?

RA1's are the gun hillclimbing tyre, but you have to buff them down for best performance. They do go off quickly on heavy cars if you're running multiple laps, but they're perfect for hillclimbing. The other options are RE55S WT compound - Mike Collin's 43sec WRX runs on them. Or the new Dunlop - everyone who's tried them at Mt Cotton has beaten their PB, so they look promising.

yeah, it is light. at least until I get in it! should be in the low 900kg range I'd say.

it has a PWR oil cooler, but only had rubber lines fixed with hose clamps so it may have been done on the cheap... I'm relocating it to beside the radiator (was behind it) and using quality braided lines and fittings. also replacing the intercooler with one under the bumper that won't block the radiator anything like as much, and have fitted a front spoiler. Oh, and moved the air filter which was partially behind the radiator! and making some shrouds for it. And I've turned the boost down to 1bar instead of 1.5. Hopefully all that will get the overheating sorted and the lower boost should reduce the heat build up in the manifold a bit. Then it will get some suspension tweaks that will hopefully make it quicker around the track even though it lost 30 or 40kw at the wheels. oh, and I've also got to sort the fuel system - the surge tank is under the car nearly horizontal... the car has alot of good gear, but the execution is lacking in alot of areas. I guess that's the risk you take when you buy a car someone else built. But at least its all minor stuff.

If my memory serves me correctly I got my Inconel studs via Apexi. That was all the way back in 1999 though so I hope my memory isn't failing me. They may well be much more readily available now? For interest, I never had any issues with manifolds/turbos loosening on that vehicle using Apexi bits after lots of circuit use

We went there in the afternoon last sunday! :miner:

Mark only got three runs with a best time of 44.44 on the mediums we used last year at tsukuba so i am trying to find a softer tyre to have another go!

http://www.skylineshack.com/racecar/000_0151.jpg <--- is a big pic so i won't put it up

I havent ran my car much and only at winton, power wise it was STD boost & missing up high (thanks to coil) but best time out of it was 1:41 at winton... and that was basically it's first run (was a regularity event so it was consistancy not speed). will have to get it back over...

But for a small rural town, we have a fair few dedicated track skylines...

cars below i have a share in

another R33 (RB30DET in the build) ---> http://www.deniliquinsportingcarclub.com/nissan/

Aus 31 with RB30ESCharged (our dirt car)

mates cars

GTS-X <--- Gibson replica (RB25)

32 GTR <--- my boss's car

some of our clubs members previous cars have been

R32 Tk GTR

R32 GTS-4

R32 GTS-T (4door)

Aus R31 with RB25DE (which done mid 40's at winton)

by the way the bar on my 33 racecar is a modified Tommy Kaira bar, with scoped air ducts etc. we made a mould if anyone wants one. (the indicators are air ducts for brakes etc)

CARS

I have no recent pics, but this is of my CA18DET powered 1600 wagon (with VG30BB turbo) built for show/circuit/street

1600.jpg

I built this mad 200B also ... with a supercharged SR20DE motor. Surprised a few people at the drags LOL

I'll hit the Mallala race circuit with the Stagea next month before I fit the turbo and cooler kit for a benchmark.

BIKES

When it comes to bikes, I took my TLR to track days

    • Hi,  Just joined the forum so I could share my "fix" of this problem. Might be of use to someone. Had the same hunting at idle issue on my V36 with VQ35HR engine after swapping the engine because the original one got overheated.  While changing the engine I made the mistake of cleaning the throttle bodies and tried all the tricks i could find to do a throttle relearn with no luck. Gave in and took it to a shop and they couldn't sort it. Then took it to my local Nissan dealership and they couldn't get it to idle properly. They said I'd need to replace the throttle bodies and the ecu probably costing more than the car is worth. So I had the idea of replacing the carbon I cleaned out with a thin layer of super glue and it's back to normal idle now. Bit rough but saved the car from the wreckers 🤣
    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
    • For race cars, this is one part where I find having the roll cage bar having gone through a hole in the floor better than the build it up on a ledge inside... The Merc I help on, the main hoop ends are marked on the car, and the jack is marked... Jack goes under a few inches and lifts one whole side of the car up... Removes that fight for long slim jacks for race car duties!   My biggest issue for the daily drivers I work on, is my jacks don't go high enough. The jacks start out on a few blocks, jack it up, then start a second jack under it on more blocks, and then I can get an axle stand under it. My axle stands are presently in use, and are nearly fully extended. The car is sitting with barely more than a cm of clearance to get the wheel off the studs! Sarah's Kluger is the same, as it has an ungodly amount of droop available in the suspension and a distinct lack of good jacking points!
    • Happy? Yep, my to do list is getting shorter and shorter. Either this light approaching is the end of the tunnel, or I'm about to be hit by a train... Ha ha ha   Also, Duncan isn't that far out of town that you need to make a multi day drive out of it. 😛
