Hi all,

I want to bring my 33 from adelaide up to sydney, anyone know a cheap and very safe way to do so? Paint is immaculate so i dont really want to drive it up, that along with the fact that on the way i may not be able to get 98 octane fuel at some stops??

I dont really like the idea of dropping it off at a depo then loaded onto a truck then dropped off at another depo for pick up, and definitely not up for a door to door service where some dude drives the car!

Anyone ever done a transport in an enclosed truck? cost?

Does anyone recommend i drive it up? at least that way its never out of sight, but what about the petrol issue?

cheers guys, SLY

The only way you could have someone pick it up and drive streight to you without going through depos etc is hiring a tow truck and getting them to drive it up there, but that would be very expensive, think $50+ and hour each way. Best and cheapest way would be drive, just buy a few bottels of actane booster if there is not premium and dont do any high speed runs.

For cruising the highway, you really don't need to run 98, 95 will suffice. I ran mine on Mobil PULP from Melb to Bris (I have a Mobil card for the fuel), then filled with 98 (Ultimate) in Bris - no serious side effects yet

But check out the Shell Optimax website, it lists every servo that sells Optimax - you should be able to work out a fuel stop strategy to get you to Sydney if you really need to run 98.

I would drive it...

I did a drive where I was sure there would be no 98ron, but there ended up being a few, and whenever i saw one I filled up even if it was only $10. Only once did I have to use PULP, never had to use standard.

But if you're worried about stone chips, then maybe not...

I brought my car down Brisbane --> Canberra on a Finemores truck...cost about $300-$400 from memory. I don't think it was enclosed though.

The best protection for stone chiping is to gaffa tape the panels like leading edge of roof/bonnet/guards and front bar. You may want to do lower edge of body aswell. Tape is cheap in big rools and it goes a fairway when put on carefully

The only risk then is the h/lights and windscreen.

I have driven from adelaide to sydney, think I only had to fill up once without 98RON, and even then it was 95RON, wasn't too bad. As for stone chips, I attached some mesh cloth (kinda like shadecloth) to the front of the car, didn't look too good but it certainly did the job...... and didn't scratch the paint either. Also stopped every now and then to clean the bugs out of the grill/ducts etc.

just watch out for the rozzers on the Hay Plain, patrol car was travelling in opposite direction to me but once they saw the 'line they did a u turn, chased me and pulled me over, for no reason.

Al,

Drive it mate! I did the reverse of what you're looking at doing (Sydney - Adelaide) & it was a hoot :) If you're worried about access to 98RON then take a few 20L jerry cans of 98 in the boot. That's what I did. In the end I only needed to use 1 can for the trip. Everywhere else had 98.

As for stone chips & bugs etc.. Well you've seen my car & the front bar hasn't been touched since that drive across (other than polish). Like JR33 I stopped every so often to clean the front end of bugs & grime. This time of yr roo's aren't as much of a problem too!

The cost of a good quality full front bar respray is less than the transport costs. Plus there's always that chance the car will recieve damage during transport.

My final words of advice...... If you want something done right, do it yourself :(

Yeah, I've done Adelaide to Sydney too, its a great drive, you can sit on the speed limiter for hundreds of klm across the Hay plains (not that I did, of course). Sure, you might get stone chips, but unless youre talking show car paint job they're bound to happen sooner or later.

    • Manual boost controllers (where a little of the boost was bled off) were quite common back in the day, because they were cheap and easy. Generally they had a manual adjustment screw rather than being fixed like yours. Down side is they always bleed boost, not just when you want them to so an electronic boost controller that uses a solenoid will have less lag.
    • Hello , im new here and i have A31 home build  RB25det neo stock eng / turbo  aem ems 2 blue connector  aem 3.5 map aem cas disk aem wideband connected to ecu  355 lph pump 550 nismo yellow injectors side feed aftermarket regulator  and won’t start with base aem tuner basic tune eventually flipped cas 180 degree so it triggers on correct stroke not in exhaust cycle  Now it won’t start Wideband reads 10 and 11 at lowest fuel setting  and will share calibrations soon for aem tuner i think something is wrong in aem tuner    please if you have any information, am very grateful
    • Legend. I ended up finding the facebook account of the owner of the first car i sent but sadly he deactivated the account. I think you’re right in saying it’s some sort of well done custom job. Really appreciate your help anyways.
    • Totally equivalent. Stock often goes from the comp cover because that's where the actuator is also installed and the factory needs 2" of hose to make the connection - and it comes as a pre-assembled unit. They totally have a boost reference from somewhere between the turbo and the throttle(s). Oh, jeez. Just do it in M12 then. We don't actually care that much. I would expect any such AN converter fitting to rely on an o-ring or some other seal onto a flat surface under the flange of the hex**, because bolt threads are no intended to provide a pressure seal. unlike..... pipe threads. **which also requires a suitably flat and smooth surface on the turbo's boss to provide the seal.
    • I also used NP   That’s were it’s seems to be the best place to fit it? All schematic shows also that it’s should be referenced from the turbo housing. But idk, I do see high hp cars without any connection or anything to their turbos, so I really don’t know how they connect their things
