what's crappy about it?

you get slightly better economy on it, it's 3c per litre cheaper than normal petrol and it has the same octane rating as premium unleaded

so that'll be win/win/win then

There is the concern that it will eat fuel lines not designed for ethanol. Other than that it may cause your fuel filter to get clogged up faster than usual because A. Corroding fuel lines and B. Ethanol has a kind of cleansing effect (though I learnt this from the internet where everything is true!). Other than that I would say it would be fine to put in a car... but I admit I've only put it in my Subaru because the servo I was at was selling a 95 octane ethanol blend cheaper than a 91 octane... and we all know how much I love my Subie ;). I'd consider ethanol if it came in 98 octane or higher...

Yesterday I put Vortex 98 in my car. It didn't seem like they where running short, and the price was $1.419 (says my receipt). But seriously, who knows whats going on? I'm going to blame it on the rain :banana:

you think service stations would be selling it without warnings plastered everywhere if it could damage your car?

Man I haven't gotten fuel for like 3-4 weeks.. Gotta love that :)

I'd be able to scrape by that if I only drove to work and home and took it veeery easy :banana: yay 8-15 min drive to work ;)

Here is some stuff I found on "Australian Friends of Ethanol" (I would of chosen a better name...) I've put my thoughts in blue. They might not be right though lol

Higher Octane

Ethanol has a higher octane rating which is why it is used in high performance fuels. When 10% ethanol is added to unleaded petrol it will raise the octane rating from 92 to 95.

Thats all well and good but I want 98 octane!

Better Combustion

Ethanol contains 35% oxygen and when blended with petrol (E10) results in a more even and complete combustion of the fuels. Ethanol blended with unleaded petrol will also reduce knocking or pinging in the motor which provides better performance and helps the motor run more smoothly.

More oxygen? Lead to pre-detonation? Or is that the same thing as kocking/pinging? lol

Cleaner Engines

Because ethanol blended fuel burns more completely and cleanly your motor will accumulate less carbon deposits than from unleaded petrol without ethanol. Continued use of E10 fuel will help to clean up your motor and fuel system due to its cleaning characteristics.

As I said before, clog up a fuel filter. Thats just the filter doing its job, simply change the filter and its sorted :)

Fuel Economy

Fuel economy is affected by many variables. Carburetted vehicles that run rich will experience an increase in fuel economy when using E10. Tests on fuel-injected vehicles suggest that fuel economy may fall by around 2%. (2) This would result in fuel economy falling from 10 litres per 100km to 10.2 litres per 100km, a difference that would not be detected by the average driver.

I'm concerned about high(er) performance cars and how their owners drive them. We aren't exactly average lol

Car Warranty

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FDAI) has indicated that manufacturers new car vehicle warranties would support an ethanol level in petrol of up to 10%.

Doesn't affect us and our 6-20 year old cars, but I guess its nice to know that car manufacturers say that it doesn't void warranty

thank you!!!! I'm a servo girl and I get abused alllllll the time... If petrol prices were up to me do you really think i'd pay $1.50 a litre? lol

Do service station attendants get a discount on fuel they buy?

I guess there should be a limit for how much you can buy though

When my dad started to work for Caltex as a truck driver he got a special Star card that entitled him to about 60L of fuel a month (if my memory is good, which it probably isn't...). This was back when fuel cost the outlandish price of $0.60/L though, so it was a little bit of a joke. Was even more of a joke when they stopped offering it.

Exactly, not to mention most of the higher octane fuels have Ethanol in them anyway.

I always carry around a bottle of Octane Booster. I've never had to use it until last Sunday when the BP in Toronto (I was away for the weekend) only had 95RON. I poured it in, filled my tank and came home. I gave my car one full-throttle stretch in second when I jumped on the freeway, and it seemed fine. The one I used says it's supposed to add up to 7 points, but even if it's really only half of that it still fills the 98 requirement must of us put into our cars.

Yep, almost 3 years in fact. Plus last week I had the injectors checked for flow and they are exactly the same as they were when I started using V Power Racing. I have given up slicing fuel filters open, there was never anything in them.

Every day fuel can jump/drop as much as 10c. How is that normal? If a big mac jumped that much i'd throw it in Ronald's f**king face.

Then go buy the correct stuff. Shell sell it, I believe.

Oxegenated fuel is a good way to develop more horsepower. In fact it is a brilliant way of doing so. No, it does not induce pre ignition/pinging/knocking or much else. Have a look at the Motec website for some work they did on an Evo.

Your fuel injectors need to stay clean as well as your valves & other parts. It is not just about your fuel filter. Having crap in the fuel system that hasn't been dislodged yet is like playing Russian Roulette. It is not about the fuel itself. In any case normal petrol has detergent added to it.

The fundamental truth here is that the ethonol blend is less dense that its petrol equivalent. So don't worry so much about the fuel consumption, worry about your AFR's.

    • I hope it's actually possible. This is a write off in insurance world.
    • Yup. 2-way with shallow ramp angles. Still works.
    • That was the first session so not a lot to take from the day. It was low 20s ambient and the coolant had got to 110 (and obviously had some pressure!) so that still needs to be addressed. I haven't downloaded the data yet but will. I had refilled the auto trans with Redline DT6 because it claimed the best viscosity I could find at 100o. It wasn't really long enough to get a good feel for that; while the trans got to 100o in the session it still wasn't shifting crisply as I hoped. I think I'll try a few more sessions before judging. No steering motor overheat but I'd hope not in only 1 session! But finally the suspension; it was night and day over the standard stuff and the car was a couple of seconds quicker on the same crappy tyres, which is a huge difference. I'll stick with that and get some sway bars and a mechanical diff sorted too and see how that all goes together
    • I guess it’s partially a compromise of how my car is used, wanting to be able to switch from drift to grip with track side on-car adjustment. Also partially with the way the knuckles are set there is more static camber but less dynamic camber gain. 
    • OK, so update from the track day on Friday It was a classic "an unfortunate series of events'. There were a few cars around and when i checked my mirror coming out of the fish hook I notice some smoke from the rear of mine. Looked again and it was getting much worse, I figured I'd blown a turbo or something to got off it and pulled off the racing line. However.... since it is a left hairpin into a right kink, I was on the inside of the next corner. There was a car passing me on the left and a big drop off over the ripple strip on the right......and someone had knocked the witch's hat that was on the apex about 1m onto the track. So, between those 3, I decided to mow down the cone and not damage my car/the other car. Right choice, but surprising result.  The car decided the cone was a small pedestrian so it blew the rear bonnet hinges up to protect their head in the upcoming person to car impact....I didn't see that coming and like an airbag deployment it happened super fast. Straight into the pits from there, everything was driving fine but it became clear it was a coolant leak not smoke, it was billowing up onto the windscreen. Onto the trailer and home. I'll do a separate thread about the repair (once I work out what it is ), but the immediate problem was the bonnet wouldn't open because the front was pinched onto the front bar and would not release. Ultimately we unbolted the hinge from the bonnet, pulled it back a little and it released from the front OK. "There's your problem", the top radiator hose had popped off at the radiator.
