What an awesome event :P

Thankyou so much JP for letting me drive the ZED. I thought we did pretty well considering the level of competition. It has been a long time since I have driven the ZED, and quickly realised it needed a miner change to make it faster for the day.

sure, a front difff. We've all been telling John that for ages!

Was upsetting to see Johns GTR with the panel damage..It was a gorgeous car :P I hope they get it fixed up and will see Craig and John out on the track again

its only 8.45 and already John is here with the black GTR to sort out whats happening. I am sure by end of day that it will pretty much be reduced to a rolling shell ready for the transplant of all the good gear into Craigs car

That's the spirit!!! :P

Will it be on the cards to fix Johns shell?? It didnt look like a write off

Was a great event and went super smooth for the first time. Will definatly be back again for the next one in my own car (will try and spend more time on the track rather than off track at the next event had a bit of a shocker saturday first time at OP takes a bit to get your head around the track layout ) Was a good fun day. Congratulations to all the competitors and winners. And sympathyies to all tht suffered from any drama especially the guy in the R34 that suffered that unfortunate (racing incident :P )

Craig and John are two fo the nicest bloks you are going to meet who really give that car hell ! :P It is the best sound GTR out there, closely followed by Mark and Russ's car. The main thing is the amount of noise comign out the tail pipe on gear changes, you hear the bassy boom resonate accross the whole race track

Yeah that was amazing! I couldnt believe the volume of sound coming out of that car on gear changes, kind of reminded me of the sound of a sonic boom from a jet.

And, im curious. If a car hits a car at a sprint, its a sad thing to happen that nobody is happy about. So noone should be lynched, sometimes these things happen.

But, am i alone in thinking that it cant be allowed to happen? If a driver hits another car from the rear under brakes then they should be asked to park the car and not considered in the results?

Again, its not a good thing to happen for anyone, and accidents happen, but its very serious and happened at a dangerous part of the track. Personally i think that even though its a tough call and hard decision, if you hit another car under brakes at a sprint event, then they should be made to sit out the rest of the day.

Especially since the officials didnt have that many flag points and were not using blue flags, the following driver has to give the competitor ahead on the road enough space that they can avoid them should they have a moment.

Anyway, i hope that is taken as a constructive comment, as it was a good event. Only i feel rather strongly about this sort of thing happening, and as unfortunate as it is, it cant be tolerated. There was no oil down etc, it was just a matter of a competitor following another far too closely :P

MAtt - I came 4th last  Doesnt matter because I enjoyed it :P

heheh

Cant see how you came 4th last? You were miles ahead of all of us walking around wishing we were out there :( Where is Barons little S13 when we needed it. It would have done real well around there. LOL, just needs 3k worth of rubber and pads :P

Awesome event guys.

From a spectators point of view, loved the fact that you could go most places and walk around the back of the pits seeing whats going on.

The one thing i couldn't believe was the amount of people on pit wall. There were people with coffee on the wall, drink bottles, leaning back having a chat etc etc.

Towrads lunch time they started cracking down on it, but really imagine a water bottle being blown off the wall into the window of someone doing a flying lap? Way to dangerous and there was no need for it.

The best part of the event for me was deciding that it's time to get a track car and make sure i enter the next one :D

Congrats to the SAU boys as well, and Chris, I've got a few good photos of you RX7 hunting.

well I will add my comments to this thing (not that anyone cares I know!).

Firstly, WOW. what a great event, Ian and Nathan and anyone else involved should be very proud. It's the kind of thing we have been needing for years. A really big event that brings together workshops and others in the trade, together with motorsport enthusiasts.

Stretch, mate your thing looked great and you did amazingly well amongst all those pesky AWD cars which always are goign to go well on the GP circuit. your car was a credit to you mate.

Mark and Russ both did amazingly well. Mark has only been to Oran Park once before and the total number of laps he's done could be most likely counted on your fingers and toes. So to be able to steer that car to the 12s is very impressive and it's a credit to Mark and Russ who built that car themselves. Russ's go in the 35 was just awesome too. We only managed to get the speed limit remover done the day before superlap and he was running it pretty much as it came from the factory right down to the (now worn) factory street tyres. So impressive that it runs 17s on streeties and Russ was driving it hard, though if he'd turned down the stereo and switched off the dvd player there may have been a few more seconds in it. :D

johnny, stop looking so sad! your car ran 6th outright mate. no small achievement that one. and next time drive your own bloody car. you know that car as well as anyone and without any disrespect to bozzo I don't really think it would be any slower with you manning the tiller on the poop deck. I will dis-own you if you don't drive in the next one.

The Vic guys, Jack, Aaron and Adz you guys did really well. Hats off to you all for making the trip up here and having a red-hot go at it. Aaron, I agree, it's absolute bullshit that middleton ran up the back of you, and had the nerve to suggest it was anyones fault other than his own. The fact that he is supposedly a professional driver makes it even worse. To my mind that 'incident' should have seen him excluded from the days results.

Well done to Jeff and Lofty. It must have been some serious fun dave to be able to wind some power into the thing after all these years running in IP the restrictors on. I knew you guys would be near the front as you boys never go into anything half arsed.

Now some feedback on the event:

Positives:

-Great format, I think the classes were good and just minimal tweaking of rules can make it even better

- lots of trophies: very important to have lots of trophies for lots of different classes etc. it gives a wide group of people a chance for some recognition

- trade involvement: you guys did well to get lots of motorsport and automotive related businesses involved. the more trade stands etc you can get the better. and any type of sponsorship is a winner. it's good for them too as they get to interact with their target market

- commentating. I think it's important to have a commentator. I think we also need a big screen (can be just a scree with laptop and projector) somewhere to show current standings to help keep people up to date.

negatives:

- need more flaggies. For a track like oran park where only small parts are visible from any one vantage point you need at least 4 flaggies. 6 would be preferable. I know they cost money, but it really does need them.

- some more pit lane control. I know you guys did try your best and did sweep through moving people on who were not meant to be on the pit wall, but it needs to be enforced more.

- competitor control: that bloke in the Queen Street RX7 must be insane. I couldn't believe it when I saw him driving the wrong way up pit lane, even as other cars were coming down the lane off the track. he should have been kicked out then and there. He then tried to deafen everyone in pit lane, then he went out and blew up his car on the straight and proceeded to drive all the way through turns 1-6, then his car stalled coming off the bridge, so what does he do? kicks it back to life and continues putting along puting out the biggest oil cloud I have ever seen. what a muppet. how he could possibly fail to notice that is beyond me. He should have been sent out there with a broom to try and clean up all the bloody oil he left everywhere. or at least fined. I didn't have to guess where he finished in the standings. lol, he got absolutely smashed by a land cruiser...middleton was another case, he should have been excluded for that. contact in a supersprint style event is un-excuseable.

I know it was a tough call with the superlap result at the end but hey, someone is always going to feel hard done by so I wouldn't worry about it.

Also, perhaps next time run it on a sunday with the saturday as free practice, and scrutineering. that will give the interstate guys a chance to practice and get scrutineering done nice and early.

Cant see how you came 4th last? You were miles ahead of all of us walking around wishing we were out there :) Where is Barons little S13 when we needed it. It would have done real well around there. LOL, just needs 3k worth of rubber and pads ;)

yeah we should have team entered it. next time brisso. :D

Sorry, 5th last :D hehehe

Nah placings for doesnt matter, I gave it a good shot and I enjoyed the little track time I had out there!

Bobby - nice mate! look forward to seeing them!!

Chris you entered! Thats awesome man!!! What was your best lap?

I think not coming last in an event that looked so serious and competitive is a credit to yourself. Just actually entering is a good effort!

Team SAU(+evo) should enter something like this in the future!

Anyone else from here enter?

Im glad I got to come along and spectate. There were so many quick cars - it was insane. Congrats to all who competed.

+1 on Middleton being a complete moron.

Commiserations to those who had 'incidents' on the day. Hopefully Bright and Burgess get the car fixed in time for WA Dutton.

We passed the S2000 on the road on teh way home on Saturday night and it was crazy to think about the times it had just been doing - one crazy car - congrats to driver and owner.

Oh yeah... and a huge thanks to SAU NSW for the corporate box - was much better viewing than the pit wall :D

Couple of happy snaps of Team SAU Vic:

    • This. As for your options - I suggest remote mounting the Nissan sensor further away on a length of steel tube. That tube to have a loop in it to handle vibration, etc etc. You will need to either put a tee and a bleed fitting near the sensor, or crack the fitting at the sensor to bleed it full of oil when you first set it up, otherwise you won't get the line filled. But this is a small problem. Just needs enough access to get it done.
    • The time is always correct. Only the date is wrong. It currently thinks it is January 19. Tomorrow it will say it is January 20. The date and time are ( should be ! ) retrieved from the GPS navigation system.
    • Buy yourself a set of easy outs. See if they will get a good bite in and unthread it.   Very very lucky the whole sender didn't let go while on the track and cost you a motor!
    • Well GTSBoy, prepare yourself further. I did a track day with 1/2 a day prep on Friday, inpromptu. The good news is that I got home, and didn't drive the car into a wall. Everything seemed mostly okay. The car was even a little faster than it was last time. I also got to get some good datalog data too. I also noticed a tiny bit of knock which was (luckily?) recorded. All I know is the knock sensors got recalibrated.... and are notorious for false knock. So I don't know if they are too sensitive, not sensitive enough... or some other third option. But I reduced timing anyway. It wasn't every pull through the session either. Think along the lines of -1 degree of timing for say, three instances while at the top of 4th in a 20 minute all-hot-lap session. Unfortunately at the end of session 2... I noticed a little oil. I borrowed some jack stands and a jack and took a look under there, but as is often the case, messing around with it kinda half cleaned it up, it was not conclusive where it was coming from. I decided to give it another go and see how it was. The amount of oil was maybe one/two small drops. I did another 20 minute session and car went well, and I was just starting to get into it and not be terrified of driving on track. I pulled over and checked in the pits and saw this: This is where I called it, packed up and went home as I live ~20 min from the track with a VERY VERY CLOSE EYE on Oil Pressure on the way home. The volume wasn't much but you never know. I checked it today when I had my own space/tools/time to find out what was going on, wanted to clean it up, run the car and see if any of the fittings from around the oil filter were causing it. I have like.. 5 fittings there, so I suspected one was (hopefully?) the culprit. It became immediately apparent as soon as I looked around more closely. 795d266d-a034-4b8c-89c9-d83860f5d00a.mp4       This is the R34 GTT oil sender connected via an adapter to an oil cooler block I have installed which runs AN lines to my cooler (and back). There's also an oil temp sensor on top.  Just after that video, I attempted to unthread the sensor to see if it's loose/worn and it disintegrated in my hand. So yes. I am glad I noticed that oil because it would appear that complete and utter catastrophic engine failure was about 1 second of engine runtime away. I did try to drill the fitting out, and only succeeded in drilling the middle hole much larger and now there's a... smooth hole in there with what looks like a damn sleeve still incredibly tight in there. Not really sure how to proceed from here. My options: 1) Find someone who can remove the stuck fitting, and use a steel adapter so it won't fatigue? (Female BSPT for the R34 sender to 1/8NPT male - HARD to find). IF it isn't possible to remove - Buy a new block ($320) and have someone tap a new 1/8NPT in the top of it ($????) and hope the steel adapter works better. 2) Buy a new block and give up on the OEM pressure sender for the dash entirely, and use the supplied 1/8 NPT for the oil temp sender. Having the oil pressure read 0 in the dash with the warning lamp will give me a lot of anxiety driving around. I do have the actual GM sensor/sender working, but it needs OBD2 as a gauge. If I'm datalogging I don't actually have a readout of what the gauge is currently displaying. 3) Other? Find a new location for the OEM sender? Though I don't know of anywhere that will work. I also don't know if a steel adapter is actually functionally smart here. It's clearly leveraged itself through vibration of the motor and snapped in half. This doesn't seem like a setup a smart person would replicate given the weight of the OEM sender. Still pretty happy being lucky for once and seeing this at the absolute last moment before bye bye motor in a big way, even if an adapter is apparently 6 weeks+ delivery and I have no way to free the current stuck/potentially destroyed threads in the current oil block.
