Yeah I know turbo-back with a nice dump/front pipe and high flow cat will give you extra power and a smoother delivery all up but I've also read in numerous places that a full turbo-back would deliver less oomph/power below 3000RPM

I live near the city so a lot of my driving is between traffic lights and I'd hate to lose power ("oomph") below 3000rpm as I VERY rarely even go above 3000 RPM

I don't do any highway driving whatsoever and don't go to race tracks. So would you recommend a cat-back system rather than full turbo-back in my case? I just want a nicer sound note from my exhaust (getting the HKS Silent system)

Advice needed quickly please !! I'd like to get one installed tommorow (got a booking)

mate the turbo back gives better power below 3000rpm because of the faster turbo spool due to the less restriction on dump/front pipe, it may spool faster and might reach full boost even before 3000rpm.

But if your just looking to rice your car up for the sound, then why spend the extra money? Just get a Canon Muffler Tip :)

P.S. Ive got the HKS Silent Cat back exhaust as well for my gtt r34

That's not what I read ..and in at least a couple of places. Maybe I'm just confuzored :) I just wish people will take into account my circumstances (ie. living in the city, no long stretches of road, LOTS of <3000rpm driving) before giving advice, although any advice is appreciated. What you're saying makes sense, but I've read the opposite more than once here on SAU ie. 'smoother delivery up to 4000rpm, but less oomph at 3000rpm' for example

So how do you like the HKS Silent? Is it drony at all? I'd love a deep rumbly sound like a WRX but I don't think that's gonna happen on an R34 hey?

Edit: here's an example thread .. http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/R3...back+turbo+back notice how the OP keeps on insisting he feels less power on the lower end, presumably under 3000rpm

Well i don't see why you won't get any gains from putting a turbo back in cuz it definitely spools faster and gives better response, so wouldn't that mean its giving more power in the end?

Well the HKS Silent sounds very nice and not so loud, but when im cruising with other cars i just wish i could of put in the HKS (non silent) hi power one. And ofcourse its not gonna sound like a boxer rumble like WRX.

are you sure what you read was based on a turbo motor and not an N/A motor?

Sssh!, geez man, don't suggest anything like that...you'll make him angry. You need to understand his needs below 3000rpm in city driving. Of course it's turbo...it revs all the way out to 3k man! Are you crazy?

could this be the first time we see someone fit a ca18 turbo onto an R34??

you could unplug a coil pack or 2.....would sound like a WRX, might lose some power under 3000rpm though! But if you keep your stock exhaust and just ad a $30 tip from super cheap this should more than make up for it and would give the sound you are looking for :)

get a bike.

if you dont rev the car it will ghey up...oh wait it has already....no wait thats the other bits.

but seriously dont even bother with an exhaust its a waste of time. sell the car and get a barina.

mate I would love to know where you are reading this stuff. i have actually had a cat back on my R32 GTS and it made good power. I then had the turbo rebuilt as it was on its way out,I had an X force dump installed as well while the turbo was off. let me tell you the car came alive after this. If anything most of the gains I made were in spool up time....it came on boost a few hundred revs earlier...made it much nicer to drive...dont believe all you read

Having a HKS Silent Hi-Power Cat Back on my 34, I didn't notice much pickup in response compared to stock tbh. Then after adding a 3" stainless front pipe and cat it spools up like a mofo. A lot quicker and responsive. So whereever you are reading these 'stories', stop now.

Common sense which is not so common.....

if you use common sense a full turbo back system allows free flow....which in turn makes the turbo spool up quicker, which then comes into boost a lot quicker hence extra power....you dont really get any/much power gains from a cat back system.....i love to find out all your findings mate....

I have a full turbo back system on my 33 and my mate has the same mods as me and running 2 psi more then me but he only has a cat back and is making less power then me.....on 9 psi he is making 175rwkw and on 7 psi I am making 180rwkw.....

Once again ...read what I said. We're talking about traffic light to traffic light driving under 3k rpm.

I'm sure you're making more power than your buddy but I'm sure that the dyno run you did wasn't up to 3000rpm only.

Either way I'm getting the full turbo back system installed .. front/dump pipe, xforce 3" cat and hks silent catback so nyer.

But the dyno would have gone PASSED 3000rpm so they can still compare power output at 3000rpm.. your argument is flawed.

Sounds like you need to buy a diesel..

Just drove it back after having it all installed and it's great. No loss of power as claimed by SOME PEOPLE (not me ffs). Either way, you were right, those OTHER PEOPLE were wrong or just full of it (or had some unrelated issue).

What the f**k is with these personal attacks? Grow the f**k up.

Mate, it's teh internetz, don't believe everything you ready BUT, when you ask a question and the overwhelming majority tell you one thing and you're adamant it's the other, what do you expect?

You can't really have too large an exhaust on a turbo, completely different to having too large an exhaust on an N/A..

    • Ahhh, I need the whole head unit. I definitely needed to roll back through and review your setup, ha ha! Neat setup they have going on. I just need a full double din head unit. But I want good and responsive. I might have to review what the likes of pioneer have out these days.
    • Ok so after much research and talking with knowledgeable people I've got my turbo conversion done and it's all running great other than 1 small issue.  Car has remained auto with the na auto and tcm, I've used a stagea ecu with. NIstune board and everything is great other than my gear selection on the dash. It illuminates park, reverse, neutral, 3rd and 2nd. But nothing drive or what gear your in when you pop it into tiptronic.  I'm sure there is may e 1 wire in the ecu plug I need to move to rectify this. Dose anyone here have any ideas?   Cheers guys
    • Sorry I haven't been following all the detail, so you may have tried this. Does it idle with the tiniest bit of throttle you can add? You've mentioned the IACV, does it have an AAC valve and have you adjusted it at all (ie, screw the idle adjust screw all the way in, then back it out a couple of turns until idle is stable)?
    • My bad, I unplugged the one underlined in red instead of yellow before. With the car started, after unplugging the IACV (the one underlined in yellow), it idled at around 400/500 for 3 seconds before stalling. Attempting to start the car without the IACV will not start the car.   It does stutter and sputter for around 5 seconds before dying. However, immediately after starting it, you can already hear some slight sputters from the exhaust.   It won't start with the AFM unplugged. If it is when the car has already started, it stalls in a few seconds.   Yesterday, I did take some logs using Nistune of 3 scenarios. Car idling till it stalls Car idling and unplugging the IACV Car idling and removing the AFM I also have some previous logs of when the Car is idling till it stalls and when driving and it cuts. I am not really knowledgeable enough to understand what to look for. After every test, car idles rougher and rougher, until I have to stop. It will be fine the day after.
    • There is no difference between a 17x8 and an 18x8. The total diameter of the tyre needs to remain +/- the same (so you don't mess up the gearing, speedo reading, and clearance when turning front wheels..... so you just need to use a lower profile tyre on th 18 than you do on the 17. /rocket surgery.
