Fuel filler cap is leaky.

Usually compliance, they dont use fuel resistant sealer around the insert for the fuel filler.

It'll cost you about $5-$10 for a tube from Repco from memory, follow the instructions and away you go.

i gota say...that was quick :P... i took a look at the sealer seems to be fine.... im gona re-seal it and see whether nething changes :ermm:.... if ne1 has any other suggestions (besides changing fuel lines) it be good to hear them just incase this doesnt work out and for ne1 else that might have the same problem :D

thanks

if it is the fuel filler seal you'll also get a fuel smell when you make hard right turns (fuel filler is on left). There's a couple of different sealers that I went through before I found one that worked. I tried Sikaflex 221, then loctite something. but these were soft setting so whenever I'd do up the petrol cap it'd turn the insert slightly until it eventually the seal broke. Then i bought selleys knead it, which is hard setting and i haven't had that problem since.

It is also worth checking the fuel lines running in and out of your fuel filter under the bonnet to see if they have aged...although the fact it only happens when low on fuel seems to discount this theory. I used to get a slight fuel smell in my car...found the lines had cracked due to aging and after I replaced them problem was solved.

Yep, well worth a look. Had the same problem with my car. As soon as I changed the fuel lines, it was all good.

um im not sure if it makes the sound when fuel tank is open... i dont think so :S...neways i bought some hard setting gasket type stuff :S....it says that its fuel resistant so im gona give that a go tomorrow (it only cost 6.50) and i'l let u guys know....but from inspection the seal looks alrite..but i do remember seeing lil lines coming down the quarter panel..so jeh lets hope its that and not the fuel lines...cuz i seriously dont wana go through the pain of taking off fuel lines from the fuel filter :@... that was the biggest bitch in the world

I am having a similar prob with my R33 GTST. Fuel smell now and then. I thought it was over sized injectors, but now I am not so sure, maybe my lines have perished. Wont be the filler cap because the smell is entering the cabin whilst driving straight, like its being blown in. Will check lines next weekend...piece of mind I have an extinguisher on board!

  • 2 years later...

I'm getting the fuel smell now, after changing my fuel pump last weekend. My tuner suggested it is the black round rubber fuel tank seal (not on the fuel filler cap), its the one inside the boot under the plastic cap that seals the tank. It is a b*tch to fit and the big plastic cap screw-on that comes after it is worse, have to tap with hammer..

Car is R34 and I think I got the seal in right - had to wedge the edges in with a flat screwdriver, but still theres a smell from boot area??? aaaaarghh - do i need a new seal or re-fit the existing????

Thats one old thread you revived buddy lol.

Check the hoses mate. I had the same problem with mine after I changed the fuel pump, you put in a higher output pump? Open up the flap where the fuel pump is located, get somebody else to turn the ignition on and see if fuel squirts from a crack in one of the hoses. Mine was a split hose and you are only able to tell once the car was switched on.

U mean u dont have the rubber seal insert? Man thats dangerous, u can have a lot of fuel leaking out / poor fuel economy and danger from cigarrette smoke / spark etc

I don't have the piece of metal that restricts which pump nozzle u can put in to fill the car. My fuel tank and associated pressure etc is fine. I just have the normal factory fuel hole :P which is exactly the same as the one I had in my aus delivered pulsar before I bought the skyline. All I'm in danger of is accidentally putting diesel in... Which I'm not stupi enough to do

    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
