If there's anyone in Perth looking for sougi there's a place in malaga that I just got a bottle from called Leader Oils. I can give out their number and address if people were interested. They did an awesome price for me and are friendly so I'd recommend them.

for anyone that wants to know, lol, unsurprisingly castrol magnatec is awful for a skyline. i'm running it in an r34 gtt as part of a flush im doing every 1000km (long story), this flush it ended up being castrol. i know some people pay more attention to the weights of oils rather than whether or not it is synthetic (which is inadvisable) so just a heads up, this oil won't make you happy.

the engine doesn't like to rev, it feels uncomfortable at mid to high rpm and is certainly louder/more raspy. it is cheap and the right weight but still not really an option.

so, just so everyone knows for sure, castrol magnatec is no good for skylines...

Comes as no suprise I use it in my partners PT Cruiser--and it loves the sh---stuff. :ninja:

AMSOil, which i'm runnning, i believe is a Group IV/V blend. Not that pricey either, again, got this from Harold. Being american, meant to be ok with E85 (which unfortunately not oils are).

Amsoil are a Group IV (PAO base) oil.... well at least they were as of Feb last year (I looked into becoming a distributor, thus received a heap of their newsletters - which were quite informative actually :banana:)

Thought it was a pretty good oil from experience.

how much is amsoil?

You will have to find an Australian distributor.

Both Henry at Performancelub.com and the guys from Lubrication Management can supply Amsoil products. Both are in Vic, have purchased from both and can recommend either for Amsoil products - although I do prefer to purchase via Henry :ninja:

Just Google "amsoil" and filter it for "australian websites only" and you should find one close to wherever you are.

10,000km is fine for a very good quality, true synthetic. That's half the point of them, longer change intervals. And if this GW is group V then 10K is fine.

But i'd still say depends on time AND km's. If you don't do 10,000km in a year then you'll be changing, if not then going by kms might be right for you.

the double ester oils, ie group V, are supposed to last significantly longer than the pao synthetic oils, group IV's, up to 10 000km. but it will probably clean all sorts of crud from your engine left over from other oils so you might want to do the first change a bit quicker. i'd personally go 5000km the first time and maybe lengthen it after that.

yeah semi's you'd want to be pretty on the ball with changes. It's just a rough guide, but keep an eye on things a little more with Group III etc.

If you're really keen or just want to stretch your money further, do a UOA after say 5,000km's or 6months with a Group III, like Nulon or Edge and see what it returns. Result might be that's all fine and you can keep going.

Depends on your driving as well. If you see a lot of peak hour traffic, your intervals are going to be shorter.

Obviously this is all exclusive of track days.

seeing as most of us are only likely to get a couple of changes out of sougi i'll probably go 5000km. i'm picking up a few on monday for a ridiculously low $60, can't believe it lol, i thought it'd be mid 60s, not high 50s.

anyways, prob back to 8100 after that. i really liked it, SIGNIFICANTLY better than nulon. seriously, worth way more than the extra 10-ish bucks

just wondering what birds recommends about sougi changes? do you go the full 10 000km or a little less?

I'm going to eek out as much life from Sougi as possible, and $ providing will stock up on some. Once that runs dry, who knows hopefully Motul will follow up on their looking into making a 10w40 8100 oil. Otherwise I imagine I'll look at either the 10w40 Royal or the 5w40 8100.

Galois, was that a typo you made? Group V oil should give you 10,000kms. And I'm sure Group IV would give more than 5000kms. It's the cheap ass, or not so cheap, but still cheap in quality oils that struggle to make 5000kms.

If money is really tight, I won't try Nulon, but might try some Valvoline, Elf, Shell or something semi. Even GW's SynX is a semi and in 10w40 too.

Interesting about your comments of the crap Castrol oil. Just adds more information here to others that it isn't the right type of oil to use. I wish the OP was around or something as we need an updated page now with not only what each group of oil is, and what makes/brands, but also what oils people have used and found they were not happy with them.

haha yeah, fixed. i thought something looked a little weird before i posted but being friday i didnt think about if after that.

motul 8100 xcess can be grabbed for $75 so not too much more than sougi, royal purple is up round $81. nulon was ok, just the 8100 was worth way more than $10 more than it, i guess other grade III's will be the same...

yeah, so angry at the castrol, not sure why, i think i just figured due to its advertising it would feel ok for at least a few hundred km. i saw some adds like "want performance/quality, want castrol magnatec" or something like that and it just really annoyed me compared to whats out there. i'd change it tomorrow, literally, if i had managed to sougi today, but alas i'll have to wait till monday. i'll probably change some time next week when i get the chance, it doesn't take long and i'll feel so much better about it.

+1, someone who's been around longer than us could maybe look into upgrading the quality of the table/list i put up the other day. all the info was taken from their websites regarding pao and ester composition, but still, quite often it's experience that counts

Change to sougi s6000 a few week ago and it has to be the best ive used to date.Thanks Kong.The oil pressure is slightly higher fom the time i put it in and has remained consistent even after my re-tune with new turbo.Every other oil i have used seemed to be really good for about a week and go backto the same pressure an old oil would after a couple weeks of driving.I'm going back next week and getting a couple more bottles and if it dries up im going to royal purple 10w40.I didn't like the motul 8100 excess.The car just felt really rough to my ears with it in when i used it.

All credit should goto Birds, that's who first put me onto the Sougi. Glad you like it, as I'm loving it too. Interesting about it holding up better than the other oils. And also nice to hear a direct comparison between 8100 vs Sougi.

I just want to add that i have been running Motul 8100 xcess 5w40w for 2 oil changes now and it's been ''rattly''. I put it down to the forged pistons but have dismissed that since running Motul turbolight 10w40w which has made it quiet.

Another satisfied Sougi fan...glad I wasn't just imagining things when I first made the switch to it. And it was pure luck through my distribution of GW haha. Oh yeah, still gotta get around to speaking with Andrew, was pretty busy this week so didn't attempt a second time...will try on Monday.

Rule of thumb is 5000km for mineral, 7500km for semi and 10,000km for full synthetic. Personally, I change mine every 5000km despite using Sougi. As a full synthetic you can stretch it out to 10,000km without a worry but I occasionally track my car and give it a boost quite frequently on the street. I'm also obsessive about oil changes - Sougi is that cheap for what it is that you can afford to "waste" it on 5000km intervals.

As gohan pointed out, it's more important how your car is driven. Above rules of thumb tend to apply to your average daily driven vehicles...if that fits your bill then by all means stick to them. But I think you'll find that Skylines, even daily driven, spend more time in the upper rev range than your average car...shearing the oil more and creating more contaminants (carbon etc.). Based on this I would shorten the intervals accordingly.

I just want to add that i have been running Motul 8100 xcess 5w40w for 2 oil changes now and it's been ''rattly''. I put it down to the forged pistons but have dismissed that since running Motul turbolight 10w40w which has made it quiet.

:P I stopped using Motul two REX's and an Rx7 ago for exactly the same reason--even if everyone says its a good drop.

    • I seem to the be only person that is using a Haltech 2500 on an NA motor, I've installed a Bosch DBW throttle body to the OEM intake manifold and am having problems maintaining AFR even with the wideband o2.  It will run extremely rich at idle and up to redline, but under load it will go extremely lean in the 20s and i'm essentially having to rev it over 4k and feather the clutch to get it up to speed.  I've read a few other threads of about the butterfly, it seems removing the vacuum to it is supposed to have it remain open, i've noticed no difference under 4k with the vacuum line to it plugged.  I'm hoping someone here has had luck using the NA manifold with Haltech, and if they happen to have a tune for it.  
    • I don't know any details, but I really wouldn't be surprised if they do it as a LHD only version, at least initially.
    • Thanks for the replies everyone. Definitely a coolant push. Oil catch can is empty and always has been. As the engine is out now I'll be having a good look over things. I do have some detonation on the piston tops from a trigger issue back about 5 years ago. I felt it and shut off then bought a new ecu and changed the trigger. Never been an issue since. It never hurt the power, its made almost 80hp more since that incident but I will pull the bearing caps to take a look. If the bearings are damaged I will do a bottom end refresh. Head is being re conditioned at the moment and the block will be cleaned and checked to ensure it's flat. I'll go with a kameari gasket and see how it ends up. The other thing I'm not super keen on is the cylinder colours. I suspect this is from the inlet manifold. The plan will be to put it back together, retune and then stick a plazmaman billet inlet on it and retune. I'm happy with the power, if it makes a little more, then great, but I would rather just make everything more efficient at this stage.

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
