I'm seriously contemplating going the circuit route with the R35 currently after my recent forest failure. With the long term aim for B12H in 2013.

There are a couple of 1hr races I could do at PI later in the year so it's just a case of getting the full details on what's involved / needed before deciding on which path to take.

Talking to Gus Kennard over the weekend, he said lapping the Mountain in the blinding rain with GT cars passing at hellish rates and sucking up 6ft high spray was more frightening than anything he'd done.... And he's defs going back next year!

Well for me it's more based upon my desire to go do the Ring 24h one day.

I like the idea of enduro's more than your typical door to door 8 lap sprints. Mostly because it also involves the team aspect (which is one of my main reasons I love rallies) + I figure there should be less panel banging in that style of racing - especially in some of the mid/lower classes. But most of the cool world wide big enduro races are on the fun tracks. I spent 2 days a few years ago driving around Spa and it sure didn't get boring. Hence why I'm going back to do it again - IN 3 WEEKS :)

But the GT guys are running this year 5 rounds with 2 x 1hr races including driver swaps which the R35 can do - and I reckon they might be fun to have a go at (even though the GT3 guys will probably be lapping around 10s/lap faster so our eye's will be in our mirrors the whole time).

But enduro events at places like Bathurst, Dubai, Daytona, Spa or the Ring I can't imagine would be that boring.

hahaha brilliant

Nissan Z31 turbo (300ZX) for targa? Bloke in our Z Car Club with targa experience is apparently looking at building one, I think for the pre 1985 class. I have had some experience with the Z31's three liter single cam V6, 350whp with a decent power spread would be doable at say 15psi boost from a standard looking motor. Car weight could be brought down to ~1200kg assuming OE steel panels are kept and the strut front semi trailing arm rear suspension could be made to work just as well as BMW did with theirs. I've yet to speak with him but apparently he is looking for a two seater rather than the heavier longer wheelbase 2+2 version which was the only one Nissan AU sold.

So, what is his likely competition and how good might it be? RX7's for starters I guess.

I think the DR30 would be a better thing, better engine, and you could probbaly get it down close to the 1000kg mark. Biggest problem is how hard they are to work on, those single turbo VG30's are a pain to work on.

In other news I finally got my footage from Southern Cross from Targa 2011.....But it has no sound!

Thats a big win, I wonder if that will make it a 4 round championship?

Yep looks like it does - email and press release:

Dear Competitor,

I write to you today to advise you of a public announcement that has just been sent out and is attached for your information advising that with the support of Events South Australia that we will be expanding the Supaloc Classic Targa Adelaide event to include all competitions currently offered at our other three Targa events. There are many reasons for this addition to the event but the key reasons are the need for the event to deliver greater economic returns to South Australia through visitation and to secure more media coverage through manufacturers support.

It will see the event grow into more of a Targa Tasmania event and create a much larger event. It will now also become the opening round of the CAMS Australian Targa Championship for ALL competitions.

As you are aware, both ourselves and Events SA were and remain very committed to a classic competition but the harsh reality is that in these less than ideal economic times, a classic only field large enough to sustain an international event in Australia is highly unlikely.

We sincerely hope that you will see the merits of this decision and understand that that one the decision was not made lightly and was made in the end in the best interest of all competitors to ensure that Adelaide has a Targa event well into the future.

We also have some exciting developments in relation to the course, which we will announce in the next couple of weeks.

To ensure that competitors in all modern competitions have the opportunity to secure the cheapest available entry fee, we have now extended the recently closed Launch Entry closing date to 30 March. New Classic competitors will also be able to secure this entry fee until the same date in the interests of fairness.

In case you weren’t aware, the InterContinental Adelaide is the events home and will host both the Welcome Party and the Presentation Dinner. To book call 08 8238 2400, email [email protected] and quote ‘Targa’ or click here to book online and get the special Targa Rate!

Please feel free to email me any thoughts you have and I look forward to welcoming you all to the event on August 22.

.....................

DR30 would be somewhere around 100kg lighter to start with than the Z31 I'd guess but there is a lot of surplus stuff in a Z31, FJ20ET -v- VG30ET engines. FJ is a great engine but crucial new parts are virtually unobtainable eg oil pumps. VG can be made virtually bullet proof without a lot of expense or effort.

The amount of monied guys around buying up every piece of FJ20 gear they can find (many gravel cars in the build) will make the DR hard to run as cheaply as a 32/33/34.

And yeah, great news about Classic Radelaide.... you must have assumed I was calling you about that this morning Stu Benno?! lol

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways.
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.
    • Damn that was hilarious, and a bit embarrassing for skylines in general 😂 vintage car life ey. That R33 really stomped. Pretty entertaining stuff
    • Hi, I have a r32 gtr transmission. Does any of you guys have an idea how much power it will hold with the billet center plate and stock gearset? At what power level and use did yours brake with or without billet plate? Thanks, Oystein Lovik
    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
