i bought my r33 gtr 6 months ago and its got compressor surge and i dont know how to go about fixing the problem. ive heard things from changing to aftermarket BOVs, could be a tuning problem, turbos could be stuffed or possibly getting a balance pipe between the two manifolds.

when trying to accelerate in fourth and fifth gears on the freeway the car just dies in the ass and doesnt wana accelerate

im realy not sure what i should do or how i should go about fixing the problem

if it helps with advice the car is a running a HKS fcon ecu, so no AFMs

the turbos are HKS items rated to 400hp each

still running stock BOVs

i already have a PFC D-jetro to go in when i have the required funds to make tuning easier

some body please help me because it is realy starting to drive me insane

you can try playing with your boost controller to bring on boost just a tad later, although i have really never heard of compressor surge from such relatively small (in the scheme of things) turbos. BOV's should effect it if its happening under load. maybe use this as an excuse to build a stroker :D

could be tuning but dont really see how, its just forcing too much air in when your motor can't swallow it obviously, you might be able to tune around it but doesnt seem like the right way to do it to me. has the Fcon been tuned in aus at all, or is it ex-japan? might be an idea to throw the d jetro in anyway

Some info that might be handy...

Our 2530's used to choof like a steam train...Jim at Croydon's completely tuned it out. We had both the inlet pipes balanced after the AFM's...obviously not your problem. We switched to GT-RS's and it was back...bigger and badder than ever...we fitted a set of HKS balance pipe manifolds and it completely disappeared.

What turbo's are you running?

im not exactly sure what turbos they are, was told that they are rated to 400hp each, they have HKS cast onto the compressor housing aswell but yeh not exactly sure as i cant read what it says on them

where did u purchase the HKS manifolds from as i would like to get a set if it fixed your prblem straight away

your lucky paul answered your question and not all the other qualified mechanics on here lol, cause they reckon coil packs fix everything.

hahaha...i'm no mechanic, nor do i know what ur problem is...but this is true...i hear a lot of people talking about changing the coilpacks haha

how does one "balance" the intake manifolds? do you mean similar to tuned length etc. or do you mean a pipe crossing between?

mine is also a steam train lol

pipe crossing in between after the AFM's...but not the problem due to the lack of them.

Id bet my balls the turbo's are 2540's as it is a common problem with them

I have a set of genuine stainless HKS balance pipe manifolds in stock but they are as rare as hens teeth and id want good coin for them.

could u pm me about how much u would want for them if u dont wont to post bit up here

how exactly?

Better airflow through the filters reduces the negative pressure difference in front of the 2 turbo.

In my car I had 2x HKS filters. I've never been a fan of foam filters and the car is still street register so it sees a bit of dust on the roads. I changed them to a pair of apexi. I instantly had more choochoo. I cleaned them with K&N air filter cleaner and did not reoil them. The surges went away. Now it only surges at cold night when it overboost past 2bars.

I may give these balanced hks manifolds a try if Paul accept bucket of Aud gold coins :)

the pic i posted up is 6 months old. the car no longer has the hks mushroom filters, im now using twin K&N filters and it makes no difference to the car at all

9krpm: i dont think your talking about the same thing. Mine does not choo-choo when overboosting past 2 bars, it choo choos when sitting on 70km in 4th gear. under boost, the engine is taking all the air in so it sounds like a normal car. I think your idea may have some merit tho i might take the filter off altogether one day and see.

my motor is a 25 with twin gt-ss. the intake is basically both turbos fed through a single afm, so there is only one pod atm.

I am using an rb25 power fc so i need to keep the afm at this point. i am very happy with the tune so would only switch to a non-afm ecu so i can get a better intake happening to get rid of this noise, which i cant really justify doing. $$

if there is any advice out there of how it can be helped tho im very interested. Im not afraid to do some work but i cant really change to dual afm or map.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just up from the 2 blue silicone joiners u have another joiner. Whats that made out of? Any chance extra airs getting in through the material? I shit myself when i had a silicon joiner come of completely, car died lol. But on yours if theres just a bit getting through maybe its contributing towards your car playing up?

Just re-read his initial post and this does not sound like compressor surge at all.

When my rb25 surged, with a maximum hi-flowed turbo, it still made power and accelerated but you would feel the surge, back and forth, and the turbo made flutter sounds.

What you have described seems to be more of a tuning issue. I assume the car came from Japan with the existing mods. Having no idea of it's history, mods before sale, tuning w/shop, fuel, etc you can't expect it to drive properly using Australian 98ron shitty fuel, without a full retune.

Have you put the car on a dyno, to see exactly what the car is doing and have a look at the a/f ratios?

Saving the $'s to fit the Pfc and get a proper tune to suit Australian fuel would be my first priority. I wouldn't try to save a few bucks buy going to a cheaper unknown tuner either, as the tune is the biggest component of any car's setup, especially when you have a d-jetro Pfc, which is a little different than your usual Pfc.

All the best, but get the current tune looked at before spending any money on changing components, just to find the same problem exists.

    • A 1.5 way is a 2 way. It is just a 2 way with a less aggressive ramp on overrun.
    • The ABS and/or TCS being missing/broken will not cause the engine to misbehave. It just casues CEL to come on and annoy you. The CEL is useless if it is always on, so you have to do the things you have to do to get rid of it, so it can be useful. Being a Stag ECU, then yes, it will not expect TCS to be present. But it will expect ABS to be present and working. You will need to either make the ABS CU talk to the ECU (don't ask me what that will take on an NA R34), and make sure the hardware is working....or, you just need to blank it out in Nistune. Do not persist with the stock ECU. You will just have problems. Gte it Nistuned. Start from there. DO YOU HAVE A BOOST SENSOR? The ECU's boost sensor that it. It is connected to the loom at the rear of the coil cover. Usually rides on the firewall on an R34, but is usually bolted down to a bracket along with all the other crap at the back of the coil cover when a Neo is dropped into another car. If you do not have it, the ECU will shit the bed. So, do you have one?
    • So sadly the fuel pump etc was not it. The pump and filter is new and it is still cutting around 4000 rpm. A read something about ABS/TCS (engine is from stagea and ECU too so no TCS) and i dont know for 100% that my car has ABS. It has ABS "cube" in engine bay but i dont think it works(or at least from my braking experience). Can be something like that?  I will be driving the car next week to Nistune tuner to properly see what is wrong...
    • the Tomei LSD fluid with lsd kit. frustrated that it was shaking the car to crap and affecting everything else negatively, I pulled the diff last night, and removed the lsd carrier, could not find anything wrong, however it seem to be 100 locked up acceleration, and deacceleration, wondering if they sent me a 2 way not a 1.5??  either way I installed the stock open carrier back in place. test drove everything smooth as butter again. no shake, shutter, random, what felt like clutch slip and grab or drive shaft play, etc. something differently wrong in side the lsd. I might bother taking it apart (if possible) to figure out what's going on inside this carrier, as bought too long ago to return.  only draw back is its back to a one wheel wonder.
