Been looking at both of these cars a bit an leaning towords the 33gtst series2. Most of the gt-t's i see are tiptronic but is it really any good. how would both the cars compare stock and how would a manual gt-t compare to the manual gts-t. just interested.

cheers.

GDay Jackson,

Someone after me will surely supply you with some engine specs comparing the R33 GTsT with the R34 GTT,

but I'd certainly pick the R34 GTT for a couple of reasons (even though I like the R33 shape better - purely from a subjective angle)

i) being a later model car, you have more chance of getting one with less Kms and less wear

ii) street cred says that an R34 GTT (manual) has won the past two NZ Targas with its 4.1 diff (against GTRs, Porsches, STis, EVOs etc)

The plus for the R33 is that they're going pretty cheap and there's lots to pick from. Just pick carefully and try >3 on the day eh?

Cheers, T

What the hell are you talking about? :)

If you are talking about Joe McAndrew then his car is not a gtt, its a gtr!

Looks like a Black GTT to me! Just watched it again!

Never mind, let's get this thread back on the road and help our friend out eh?

Thats because it has a gtt front bumper :)

And yes, back on topic.

It is probly best that you go and test a r33 and a r34 for yourself to make a decision, each have their good and bad points such as

r33 is lighter and less powerfull

r34 is heavier but has more power

r34 is newer so should be in better condition

etc etc

And when it comes down to modifying both are pretty similar, espcially when it comes to engine modifications.

r33 is lighter and less powerfull

r34 is heavier but has more power

r34 is newer so should be in better condition

etc etc

True..

In terms of engine.. a GTT is in every way superior - More PSi from stock, ceramic turbo etc.

R33 GTST pushes 184 kW, 294 Nm

R43 GTT pushes 206 kW, 343 Nm

I am really not a fan of either cars..

But after driving both.. GTT hands down..

Save a little more for a manual GTT..

R33's these days are usually thrashed to the shithouse.. which means more km.. which means you need to replace things earlier.

34's have a higher cabin quality with more comfort..

I think the question you should be asking.. is;

33GTR vs. 34GTT.

Even then.. you could buy a 34 GTS4 and would be almost the same a 33GTR for a cheaper price..

Thats my 2cents

I've got an r34 gt-t which I bought after trading in my r33.

Noticable seating position difference, lower and sportier feel in the r34. Less rear legroom in the r34 being shorter overall, but difference is marginal.

Noticable increase in chassis rigidity in an r34, steering feels a lot lighter, turn in is sharper and much more stable powering out of corners, this makes it feel lighter and more nimble than an r33 but is a heavier car

coming from an r33 they're definitely a worthwhile upgrade, which you will notice when you drive and look at both.

No battery in the boot made it easier for me to install split speakers into the rear parcel shelf (battery put back in the engine bay for the r34 models)

no ugly external radio aerial on the 34

R33 GTR, probably more chance previous owner would've thrashed it (as opposed to a gtst)

insurance premium jumps moreso I've found (I looked into getting an r33 GTR before I chose the r34)

I'd imagine running costs would be a bit more expensive in the sense of insurance, replacement parts and repairs shuld anything go bang

all the best with your car hunting :P

hey man,

my 99 R34 GT-T manual is on its way from Japan atm

i got it for 17000 complied and landed here in adelaide.

5 spd manny with 50,000 on clock grade 4.5 outta 5 in auction.

lowered, exhaust, tint

no scratches or dents, perfect body.

DVD system with sat nav

white 2 dr.

I have a mate that has the same one so i tested it before i bought mine, and eveything about them is amazing. im very happy with it so i recomend the R34 GT-T by all means, r33 are nice, but i prefer a 34 by FAR! nicer looking cars in my opinion

But good luck with everyhting mate! im sure you'll find what your looking for.

Cheers, J

34 has a stiffer chassis too, even stiffer than an r33 gtr i think (happy for someone with more knowledge to either confirm or dispute this though, as I can't remember where i read it).

Plus, in my view more important than the differrence in KW is the better low-end torque of the NEO engine, 343nm@3200rpm vs. 295NM@4800RPM for the 33. This, and the better quality interior, is why most people say its a more refined ride than a 33.

if you want an R... like we all did.. buy it... you will ultimately wish you had.

33's are a cheap way into a well balanced car. Will take money to get the performance you will want.

chassis rigidity, 34 gtt's are 'better'... 33's feel sloppy as a wet fish without tensioning... SERIOUSLY.... being better isnt exceptionally hard...

33 vs 34 engines total output is not hte story... stock for stock a 34 will JUST beat a 33. the 34 will be more fuel efficient throughout the rev range making more average power throughout that same range.

p.s. they are all second hand cars...

as clarkson said and is quite accurate actually.... they have all been wound back somewhere around dubai..

I think the question you should be asking.. is;

33GTR vs. 34GTT.

Explain how this is possible?

I dont think a r34 gtt would come close. Ive driven a r34 gtt and my current 33 gtr.

The R is far more superior.

The gtt just looks "fresher"

  • 1 month later...

Ide take an R33 GTR over an r34 gtt anyday!

Thing is if you want a gtr, you wont be satisfied untill you have one...

Which is why i might be selling my series 2 r33 gts-t and upgrading to a 1996 R33 GTR V-SPEC series 2

    • It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about. Reliability of everything in a 34 drops MASSIVELY above the 300kw mark. Keeping everything going great at beyond that value will cost ten times the $. Clutches become shit, gearboxes (and engines/bottom ends) become consumable, traction becomes crap. The good news is looking legalish/actually being legal is slighly under the 300kw mark. I would make the assumption you want to ditch the stock plenum too and want to go a front facing unit of some description due to the cross flow. Do the bends on a return flow hurt? Not really. A couple of bends do make a difference but not nearly as much in a forced induction situation. Add 1psi of boost to overcome it. Nobody has ever gone and done a track session monitoring IAT then done a different session on a different intercooler and monitored IAT to see the difference here. All of the benefits here are likely in the "My engine is a forged consumable that I drive once a year because it needs a rebuild every year which takes 9 months of the year to complete" territory. It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about with this car.
    • By "reverse flow", do you mean "return flow"? Being the IC having a return pipe back behind the bumper reo, or similar? If so... I am currently making ~250 rwkW on a Neo at ~17-18 psi. With a return flow. There's nothing to indicate that it is costing me a lot of power at this level, and I would be surprised if I could not push it harder. True, I have not measured pressure drop across it or IAT changes, but the car does not seem upset about it in any way. I won't be bothering to look into it unless it starts giving trouble or doesn't respond to boost increases when I next put it on the dyno. FWIW, it was tuned with the boost controller off, so achieving ~15-16 psi on the wastegate spring alone, and it is noticeably quicker with the boost controller on and yielding a couple of extra pounds. Hence why I think it is doing OK. So, no, I would not arbitrarily say that return flows are restrictive. Yes, they are certainly restrictive if you're aiming for higher power levels. But I also think that the happy place for a street car is <300 rwkW anyway, so I'm not going to be aiming for power levels that would require me to change the inlet pipework. My car looks very stock, even though everything is different. The turbo and inlet pipes all look stock and run in the stock locations, The airbox looks stock (apart from the inlet being opened up). The turbo looks stock, because it's in the stock location, is the stock housings and can't really be seen anyway. It makes enough power to be good to drive, but won't raise eyebrows if I ever f**k up enough for the cops to lift the bonnet.
    • There is a guy who said he can weld me piping without having to cut chassis, maybe I do that ? Or do I just go reverse flow but isn’t reverse flow very limited once again?
    • I haven’t yet cut the chassis, maybe I switch to a reverse flow. I’ve got the Intercooler mounted as I already had it but not cut yet. Might have to speak to an engineer
    • Yes that’s another issue, I always have a front mount, plus will be turbo plus intake will big hasstle. I’ve been told if it looks stock they’re fine with it by a couple others who have done it ahahaha.    I know @Kinkstaah said the stock gtt airbox is limiting but I might just have to do that to avoid a defect so it atleast looks legit. Or an enclosed pod so it’s hidden away and feed air from the snorkel and below Intercooler holes like kinstaah mentioned. Hmm what to do
