+1 on organizing a cruise - moved here recently from the states, would love to get to know the area and you punks a bit better

Roads not perfect but the ride through the national park down to wollongong with a shot up Mt. Keira is great. Nice little restaurant/lookout at the top of Mt. Keira too.

I'd probably be keen on a cruise, at least through macquarie pass.

When I last organised a cruise there, we started off from Penrith Autobarn at 6am and rendezvoused with some others at the base.

At 7.30am we had 7 Skylines & NSX & FPV in convoy; all of us from lower Mtns and Penrith.

To avoid traffic, we had a pair of 7Km rated 2-ways so that one could talk from the top and say that no trucks were coming downhill;

or other obstacles! If a 10 tonner is coming down the hill it has to take up both sides of the road on a left hand hairpin... etc, etc

Breakfast at 8am was at Ranelagh House and we had booked the lounge for introductions and banter. $15/head though.

Robertson Pie Shop can be a viable alternative as a breakfast site; but it doesn't open till 9

We had intended to proceed thru Kangaroo Valley and then come back via Kangaroo Valley Rd where the EVO Club goes:

but it was foggy & drizzly that day so we came slowly down Cambewarra Mtn instead.

Had a camera car for dvd work and it all worked out like a treat! Cars arranged to sequentially pass the camera car to get footage.

I still have the plan on M'soft Word. Kangaroo Valley Rd or Jamberoo Mtn Pass Rd will be more private on a downhill run.

A future cruise can be easily arranged; and I'm glad to advise a leader to do it. I can't voluteer to lead as my wife is ill atm.

I can volunteer to be a camera car though. DVD+R disks allow for copies to be made without 'finalising'

Cheers,

Tez :D

There's a good little road near Goulburn that I like known as Wakefield Park. :D
There is also a good road around Cobbity....Oran Park I think its called?

It has 3 different layouts too!

There's also a good one just off Sutton Road near Queanbeyan, right on the border of NSW and the ACT. I'll be heading down there for a drive on September 14th...

McCarrs creek Road is good, as long as people driving skylines dont out brake themselves and hold up the traffic... :D

*waits for Cassbo to see this thread :) *

LOL, the only traffic I held up was the cars that stopped and helped me out. :domokun:

If I had to choose one bit of road to be opened up for a targa rally hillclimb thingy it would have to be Old Pacific Highway. It does suck though when you're going around a corner at 80km/h only to be suddenly confronted with a cyclist going snail pace around said blind corner :(

a place in NSW (preferrably around sydney) where you could unleash some of your car's potential.

Somewhere with minimal traffic, great views, the curvy bends, the long straights and the smooth roads.

Eastern Creek Raceway

It has everything you want, and is cop free!

I thought SAU frowned on these "potential unleashing on public roads" shenanigans?

Hiya,

I've been PM'd a few times for Mac Pass details & agenda that was implemented February last year on our Cruise - so here goes...

Agenda: Initial briefing at Penrith Autobarn Carpark at 6am SHARP and depart at 6.05

Other than earlybirds introducing themselves then (in the dark), formal introductions will happen after breakfast so that we can get a relatively free run up the Macquarie Pass first.

a) The round trip from Penrith > Kangaroo Valley > Penrith will be 360Km

Driving time overall is about 4.5 hours plus stops. So fuel tank should be full.

b) Arrival at the base of Macquarie Pass should be 7.30. This is the first stop after 1.4 hours via Northern Rd > M5 > Picton Rd > Princes Hwy > Roundabout to Albion Park > Illawarra Hwy #48

c) It is best to stop at the base for as long as possible (>3 mins) with no traffic going by, and then this gives us a free run to proceed up the mountainside.

d) Macquarie Pass consists of 130 apexes up the escarpment before the first (minor) road comes in from the RHS and then twists are not as sharp. Sweepers involving another 50 apexes are negotiated up to Robertson Pie Shop (opposite Jamberoo Mtn Rd).

The run up to there is 14Km.

e) 2nd stop will be at 8am for a full buffet breakfast (hot & cold for $25/head) 1.5 Km up the road on the LHS at Ranelagh House.

Plenty of Parking at the rear. DVD and photos of you cars can be taken underneath the archway at the front door after B'fast.

f) After B'fast, we've booked the huge lounge across the hall for introductions via a networking questionnaire. LOL

This will take up about half an hour.

g) From Robertson, it's 13Km to Sheepwash Rd and turn left towards Nowra Rd.

h) Turn left at Nowra Rd #79 and proceed 25Km down to Kangaroo Valley

i) 3rd stop will be Kangaroo Valley for morning tea. DVD can be taken of cars going across the stone bridge designed by Francis Greenway. Take your own pics here too if you like, because we'll stop in the township 1 Km further on

j) After morning tea, and 1 Km further east of Kangaroo Valley, turn left onto Kangaroo Valley Rd.

It's 15Km to Berry via sealed but at times narrow road up and then down the mountainside

The asphalt can be a bit crumbly in spots, so don't tailgate lest you want stone chips.

Turn left at the Princes Hwy speed trap and this is now Berry township.

2 more speed traps are located just north of Berry and another at Wollongong

k) Farewell lunch can be had at Picton. A first floor cafe is located in the middle of Picton with a first floor balcony overlooking the main intersection. You can watch or take pics of your cars from here.

Warnings and Recommendations....

These were printed off for attendees with regard to sections of road devoid of shoulders, usage of 2-way radio, bringing your camera and making sure you pass the camera car regularly to have your car spotted on DVD. Once the camera car was passed by all cars, the camera car was then to overtake all the cars (with care) and the DVD+R disk filming resumed once again.

Hope this helps, Terry

I thought SAU frowned on these "potential unleashing on public roads" shenanigans?

I thought the title of this thread was "Greatest Driving Road In or Around Sydney" I dont see how a awesome driving road automatically implies shenanigans... Agree - people should not be proliferating the idea that speeding or any other dangerous behaviour on public roads, but I did not think that was the point of this thread.

Terry, you must smash the springwood rd all the time!? (i remember you telling me at envy dyno day your round that area)

Hiya Dave,

Yes, Springwood Rd is very good for warm-ups with as you know, 3Km of twisties & tights. Sweepers are at the base of this escarpment for the benefit of other readers. The friendly Police have been regularly patrolling the sweepers from Hawkesbury Hts to Agnes Banks. As you know the bikies get us a bad reputation!

Sunday mornings are still best, but one needs to watch out for all types of bikes.

Cruising along the Putty? :P Grab hold of me then eh?

Terry.

I like old pac... I miss the last section, I don't even remember it ;)

The reasons I like it are:

i) it can be quite scenic

ii) it doesn't put you to sleep like driving on the freeway does at midnight on Thursday

iii) it actually takes me to where I'm going on Thursdays :)

iv) the 80 km/h speed zones are fair for anyone with a normal head on their shoulders

v) WAY less road works then the freeway

Other then that, the national park down to the gong is VERY scenic on a nice sunny day :P but then you end up in the gong :D

National Park to Wollongong fails. It used to be good about 5-6 years ago but now the rd is that bad ie: potholes, cracks and poor barriers i wouldnt call it a great rd to drive on. Mc Pass is ok(uphill). But Putty rd is the winner.

Me personally i like the new widened and resurfaced part of the M5 and onto the M7 :P

    • OK, Step 3, if you need to remove the valve body, either to replace it, the TCM, or to do a more complete drain.  First, you need to disconnect the TCM input wires, they are about half way up the transmission on the drivers side. One plug and the wires are out of the way, but there is also a spring clip that stops the socket from sliding back into the transmission. On my car the spring clip was easy to get, but the socket was really stuck in the o-ring of the transmission housing and took some.....persuasion. You can see both the plug to remove (first) and the spring clip (second) in this pic Incidentally, right next to the plug, you can see where the casting has allowance for a dispstick/filler which Nissan decided not to provide. there is a cap held on with a 6mm head bolt that you can remove to overfill it (AMS recommend a 1.5l overfill). Final step before the big mess, remove the speed sensor that is clipped to the valve body at the rear of the box.  Then removal of the Valve Body. For this the USDM Q50 workshop manual has a critical diagram: There are a billion bolts visible. Almost all of them do not need to be removed, just the 14 shown on the diagram. Even so, I both removed one extra, and didn't check which length bolt came from which location (more on that later....). Again it is worth undoing the 4 corners first, but leaving them a couple of turns in to hold the unit up....gravity is not your friend here and trans oil will be going everywhere. Once the corners are loose but still in remove all the other 10 bolts, then hold the valve body up with 1 hand while removing the final 4. Then, everything just comes free easily, or like in my case you start swearing because that plug is stuck in the casing. Done, the valve body and TCM are out
    • OK, so if you are either going for the bigger fluid change or are changing the valve body which includes the Transmission Control Module (TCM), first you should have both a new gasket 31397-1XJ0A and a torque wrench that can work down to 8Nm (very low, probably a 1/4 drive one). You can probably get by without either, but I really didn't want to pull it all apart together due to a leak. First, you now need that big oil pan. The transmission pan is 450 long x 350 wide, and it will probably leak on all sides, so get ready for a mess. There are 24x 6mm headed bolts holding the pan on. I undid the 2 rear corners, then screwed those bolts back in a couple of turns to let the pan go low at that end, then removed all the middle bolts on each side. Then, undo the front corner bolts slowly while holding the pan up, and 80% of the fluid will head out the rear. From there, remove the remaining bolts and the pan is off. You can see it is still dripping oil absolutely everywhere...it dripped all night.... I got another couple of litres when I removed the pan, and then another few when I removed the valve body - all up another 4l on top of the 3 already dropped in step 1.
    • Yeh I think i'll message an old contact i had for ages that manages his own tyre shop now.. n tell him what i want n work with him before ordering..  Got this 17x9 +30 Driftteks on 245/45/17 PSR Drag Radials on the rear.. They fit well - for your reference in future - Rear guards  have been lipped in & minimal to non flaring of the rear Gaurds.
    • If only it were that easy! I also needed to remove seats, shocks, brake calipers, send my car through a fence, and use measuring and ended up guessing because I didn't remove seats, shocks and brake calipers. It can be hard sometimes Can be a little more complex than 'just measure' if you want to truly measure the entire wheel through all of it's suspension travel. But if you aren't going for every last mm then yeah, you can check the space you currently have and guesstimate.
    • If you own a car, and it has wheels on it, and you know the offset of those wheels, and you have a measuring device, you have everything you need to work out if other wheels will fit.
