Hey guys.. just completed a full rebuild for my R32 GTR.. the below listed is what has been done..

At the moment i have a stock ecu and will be going aftermarket, either power fc or vipec etc.

The question is, having the stock internals apart from the upgraded oil pump and cams, are these suitable turbos or are they too big and will the motor hold up?

- Stock bottom end

- N1 oil pump

- Garrett GT2860 - 10 turbochargers

- Tomei Type A camshafts 260 degree 9.15mm lift

- 550cc denso injectors

- Higher volume fuel pump

- Larger FMIC

well i bought the car, had it for a while and my rings melted, previous owner rebuilt the bottom end with forged pistons and was very rough with the car.. i have just given it a fresh rebuild with second hand bottom end which is practically brand new with all stock internals apart from the oil pump which i changed to an N1.. therefore i already had everything that i have listed such as injectors, turbos, etc. So really i just want this setup to work...

GT2860-10s dont exist,

If you mean GT2871R -10 (and most people do) then these are some decent sized turbs

they are bigger than the 2860-5 (rough: 2530's) and are about the same as HKS GT-RS's

These are probably a bit big for a streetable 2.6, and ull almost definatley want forged rods and pistons

Do a search and see what the guys who run GT-RS's on 2.6l motors have to say, you might be happy with less low down power and more rush up top.

I had 2860-5's on my stock bottom end GTR and actually found them a bit laggy.. full boost 4700rpm. You really had to plan on booting it, couldn't just put your foot down at 2k and expect to go anywhere. I guess I was coming from an Evo with a short ratio box though, maybe not a fair comparison? If I was doing it again, I'd go GT-SS...

2860-10 do exist however they are GT-RS equivelents

will be laggy as shit for a street car, however your bottom end wont hold its power for long

depending on your power goals

id go 2860-7 (Garret) aka GT-SS (HKS) closer to the high 300awhp

or 2860-5 (Garret) aka GT2530s (HKS) high 400s

well i guess the plan is to have it mild tune with not too much boost going through them.. should be picking it up next week so i guess will see how it goes... however, by the sounds of it i dont think i will be enjoying the drive so far unless i give it hell which i dont like doing, i would rather somehting more responsive throughout the rev range and boost to come on around 3kish...

Go for HKS GT-SS if 3000rpm is your aim. I think Performance Wholesale has them on sale at the moment for $3000 all up. You can email them at [email protected] or the web www.hks.com.au

I saw a HKS 2.8L RB with 264/272 cams and GT-RS make on a BNR33 429kw (575HP) at 4 wheels at 22psi boost. The boost response was as follows.

2200rpm = 2.2psi

3200rpm = 4.5psi

4000rpm = 7.4psi

4250rpm = 10psi

4750rpm = 22psi (max set)

Correct which shows that if you want boost by 3000rpm these turbo's are too big. Stick with the GT-SS for response.

:) therefore, having the 2860-7's would be fair to say that roughly around the 3k mark boost will start to come through... when i drive my car for the first time this week ill let you know when the -10's come on! hope its not too late!

My 2 cents.....

Your turbos are toooooooo big for a street 2.6L GTR.

For a street car you cant drive practically with mega lag.. It just takes away the "thrill" of driving a GTR (or any turbo car for that matter).

If I were you I would would sell off your current turbos and go for the GT-SS's. You will love the power and response. Trust me.... :(

so i've been told! lol i bought the car and it was built previously with a strengthened bottom end hense the big turbos and i have gone back a couple steps however leaving the turbos for now.. in the next couple weeks ill obviously be taking them off for sale so yeah i most definately will be getting a set of GT-SS's... :wub:

of course it does! How about you get away from your keyboard for a moment, and actually pull two dyno runs, one a 2WD dyno and one on a 4WD and post up the differences in power delivery and torque curve and try to tell me otherwise...

You are wrong....we have proved this theory on more than one occasion in front of hundreds of people at Autosalon. The difference in a 500AWKW car.....2KW.

    • They are under bucket shims. Tomei provides a test shim kit and then any measurement of shim required. 
    • I always wondered how you were supposed to buy a set of 24 buckets and somehow magically have every single one of them yield exactly the desired clearance. I would have thought you'd need to assemble a cam with either 12 "sample" or "example" buckets of known top thickness (or a single such sample/example 12 times over!!) measure clearances at every valve, and then do the usual math to work out what the actual "shimness" of each bucket needed to be, before buying the required buckets to make up he thicknesses that you didn't have on hand.
    • I now seem to be limited in power due to my rev limit/hydraulic lifters in my built RB25. I'm looking into converting over to Tomei solid lifters. Question for anyone that has done the conversion. I was always under the impression that when using the Tomei solid lifter conversion, you would also require new valves (Longer or shorter stems, I can't remember which).  I don't know where I got this idea, as so far I see no mention of this in any of the Tomei documentation. It just states I need the Tomei solid buckets, solid lifter cams and upgraded springs. As my head is already built, all I would need is another set of 1000$ Kelford cams, 500$ buckets and about 4H hours of my time installing and I'm off to the races!?!? There's no way it's that simple, I must be missing something?
