The life of a hot dipped gal trailer should be good for at least 25years and longer..

I know surface rust isn't the end of the world,but a gal trailer will have higher resale value and last longer.

Well if I were spending around 5 to 6k I would personally elect to buy a non gal Aussie steel trailer with some nice options. That will outlast a gal china steel trailer.

I see little point in speccing up a china trailer. They're cheap, and they're value Because they're cheap.

That's just me though.

yeah Neil looked into those. too hard to find and they require the specialist mounts on the deck of the trailer.

Dennis was using a very similar tie down system on his little trailer for his clubman. it had rings mounted on the deck (they fold down flush), and a normal ratchet strap went through them and got tied to the front. mspaint explains....

i have those tie downs in mt 23 footer. work perfectly

Whats peoples experience with Torsion axles?

Im looking into building my own car trailer as part of a final year uni project. So far the requirements are a 3.8x2m bed and a maximum load capacity of 1400 kg to carry my own track car (1200 kg supra) and possibly my mates track cars. I've previously been hiring trailers which have weighed around 1 tonne which although the tow car (saab 9000) has towed it without dramas, the aim is to try make this purpose built trailer as light as possible, hopefully around the 4-500 kg range. As such i was looking into single axle trailers but since reading this thread, would seem like a mistake.

as you know i own the same shapoe as you. i built my 23 footer with ids on all 4 wheels and electric brakes on all 4 wheels. but my old trailer was a standard 14footer with cable brakes and break away system and it was towed by my 2006 STR navara. ive now got an amorok. and with this trailer fully loaded it weighs about 3.1t

Resurrecting an old thread for a bit of advice. It's time for me to get a car trailer so I can start running my car to the track in Darwin (some 317k's away on a road that isn't as flat as you would expect) but I've come upon a rather common problem, what car trailer do I buy? I've read through this entire thread and some others, in addition I have talked to a few other mates who have half an idea about trailers but I'm still confused as to which way to go.

The thing's I do know is that I'm not buying second hand (a 600k round trip with an old shitter just doesn't cut it for me), I'm going for a duel axle as I'm moving a 33 gtst and i want to lend this trailer to other mates, I'm going to try my best to find the lightest trailer possible to keep my running costs down in the long run (and to make it easier to move around by hand) and it will have to have an open floor so it may be used as an emergency workbench (eg gearbox drops/dropping sumps/checking out the latest hecktic damage).

The thing's I don't know are just brake types I should go with (electric controlled braking is favorited up in the NT it seems) and the small things like wheel storage, electric winches, nose cones, etc etc.

That all said I recently found a company called Tilta Trailer ( http://www.tiltatrai...le_trailer.html ) whom make a trailer that seems to check a number of box's, but the only information I have of this trailer is what the website says but I was really hoping someone here has some real world experience with this trailer.

So I guess at the end of all this rambling I would like to ask the following questions: Is the Tilta Trailer as handy as it makes it's self out to be? If so would it handle a pretty average 600k round trip every month with 1200kg's sitting on it? Or should I just go for something super simple and just deal with ramps like everyone else?

And as always any extra hints and tips for towing would be appreciated.

And the mesh tops doesn't concern me too much, i can just stick a few bits of carpet underneath the tires if I'm running around on semi's just to be on the safe side.

If you don't mind me asking essay what electric brake setup did you run along with it? And how easy is it to work the air bags on the trailer?

Using Redarc remote set up. Airbags no issue, excellent ride loaded, just don't forget to undo pin allowing trailer to tilt unlike me when I was unloading it at Tru track in Melbourne in front of cafe and the car dropped onto it's CF under tray with rear wheels in the air. Oops

Oh that's just painful to hear. Hopefully i won't have anything bad like that happen during the coming years of transporting my car around, however the same cannot be said for some of my mates who will no doubt be borrowing the trailer at one point or another haha.

And cheers again for the info essay, will be emailing them soon for final prices and shipping probably tomorrow.

    • If you mean the alarm immobiliser; theyre internal to the alarm itself which makes that difficult; I couldnt even see where he put it; its not in the same place as last time; but with all black wiring it might be very challenging to trace  I had someone turn the key for me as I know it only primes for a couple of seconds As my post above; I am getting no voltage to the pump at all; but I am testing continuity of the power line (SB) from the pump plug to the relay fine. As well as the negative from the pump plug to a 12V constant.    Yeah; he blammed the no start on a bad battery; said I needed to get a new battery and it'll start. Turns out the battery drained because the tail lights had been on for half the day during the install (the rubber cushion on the brake switch gave out while he was testing it as I have a picture of the car from that morning with the tail lights off..i've replaced that). The battery was turning over the engine just fine for a long time; but got low since lights were draining it so it was too low to test a start after he finished. I bought a new one on his advice...$250 wasted. My original battery charged up just fine and is healthy.    It was running perfectly fine when I messed up the old alarm (programmed out the remotes). He couldnt start it after removing the old alarm; my assumption is that when he unhooked it; he didnt bridge the circuit back when trying to start it. Its always been perfectly fine. The ECU swap and pump were 2 years ago. It's never missed a beat in that time. 
    • This is a big issue for me without the diff. I just have zero drive from the passenger side when drivers side has no traction. Bec's parents place has a crazy steep driveway with odd camber and I have never been able to get up. My bro-in-law's 130i with an (unknown brand) LSD gets up fine as does their dad's Hiace. My car stays at the bottom. We have other odd camber roads around here as we're elevated a bit and if it's raining I can get totally stuck around some hairpins.
