Hello all,

I thought this would be more appropriate in a thread of its own.

I had a task to accomplish at the request of one of my customers. He wanted to know if the turbine wheel on his pair of R34 GTR turbos was ceramic or steel. This was so that he could decide whether to upgrade to some -7's or stay with the stockies. At the risk of doing myself out of a sale, I always stay honest with my customers at all times and will always persue the truth no matter what the risk or consequence. Honesty is the very best policy in my opinion.

After many people told me I was wrong, I was beginning to think maybe I was but the evidence was confusing to say the least. I was also told by the manufacturer that it was, indeed, steel. This was direct from Garrett. I was, again, told I was wrong but I needed to prove conclusively that it was either steel or ceramic. At the risk of looking like a wanker I persued it further so that I could give my customer a definite answer.

I spoke with Garrett 3 more times on the matter and also spoke to Heat Treatments about testing the metal. I had people checking data for me from Garrett until finally speaking to the right person.

The first person I spoke to was incorrect. The second person told me, without a doubt, that the R34 GTR has a ceramic wheel on the turbine. It is still ball bearing and is the only one of its kind.

The conclusion is - R34 GTR turbos are ceramic turbine. They are the only ceramic turbined ball bearing turbo ever made by garrett.

I am sorry if I have misled anyone with information I provided on this matter. I was led to believe by experts in their field, that the fact was different.

I also said I would apologise if Garrett were lying to me, which they had unintentionally done so. I am sorry for this.

I am also sorry for dragging user DirtGarage down in multiple threads as a result of my pigheadedness in my quest to seek the truth as this argument would not have occured if I had received the correct information and not spoken until I had received it.

It sucks when you are told something direct from the horses mouth and it is the wrong information. I am sure Dirtgarage can relate to that.

At the end of the day, shit happens and if we don't have strong opinions about stuff then SAU would get boring real damn quick.

you have just gone up a notch in my book. You are now at notch 1 (joke)

sometimes the information you recieve from suppliers is not always correct or is their slanted version of the truth as i tried to point out in the P.E. thread. My reputation has been comprimised in the past for similar mis-information by a product supplier so i know exactly how you feel.

Good show man ;) And cheers for sharing, the more people in the car scene looking out for the good of the many instead of their own pride - the better things will get. I had never been too sure about the R34 turbos, always under the impression they were effectively GT25Rs.

On that topic I think Nissan have a few "specials", the (IHI based I think?) R33/R34 "GTSt" turbos are ball bearing and ceramic turbine/nylon compressor which is an interesting mix and I am still trying to ascertain whether facelift S14/S15 SR20DET turbos have a ceramic turbine. WHY DID THEY DO IT?

Might wanna get a mod to change the title to "Truth about r34 gtr turbos"

Anyways down side is now im defnitely gonna have to do my turbz asap as i dont want this ceramic junk flooding my engine when they come appart lolz.

shit man, based on you telling me my 34 had steel wheels, I cranked the boost to 437PSI and all of a sudden something went bang including my motor from this pottery looking dust....?

S15 turbos are without a doubt steel wheel on both the turbine and compressor. (I used to have one an s15)

R33gtst are ceramic turbine (turbine steel or ceramic?)

R34gtt are ceramic turbine, nylon compressor.

Mate, I feel for you I understand how frustrating it is when you get told something by the apparent expert only to find out is wrong. That is the problem I have with the automotive industry- its very difficult to find anyone you can trust. Hence I have just learnt myself by seeing/doing/watching things rather than listening to people. Well done for persisting though.

The stronger block from the R33 N1 GT-R was used on all R34 GT-Rs.

good to see someone tells the truth no matter if they are right or wrong in the first place, i know i am re iterating but so many (performance guru's) will fight to the end to be right even if they are not, ive got a question tho, ive got a pair of high flowed gtr turbo's sitting at home that are spose to have steel wheels, but a magnet wont attach to the rear wheels, a workshop owner told me once that the magnet will not stick because of carbon build up, what do you guys think?

r33 and s15 compressor wheels are aluminium alloy like 99.9% turbos.

certainly non-magnetic alloys.

    • Put a fuel pressure gauge on it. Replace the turbos. Probably completely separate issues.
    • What copper washer do you guys use on the bleeder bolts? The existing one I have I had no idea where to find it in a local store, I did buy some online but that are only 1mm thick whereas my old one is 2mm+ thick and when I put the new washer out and squeeze the top radiator hose I can hear a bit of air but not with the old one. Does this matter? The new one doesn't leak, but the inner diameter is a bit loose whereas the old one threads on the bolt.
    • Howdy all, after being out a few weeks ago on a spirited drive in my GTR I have 2 issues that oddly have appeared at the same time. Whilst accelerating quickly through the gears all of a sudden i’ve lost power at the top of third gear (below redline around 6000rpm) for no obvious reason.    From that point onwards the car has been running rich on idle, won’t really rev under load without a ton of black smoke and the odd backfire, and dying as a pull up to a set of lights unless I keep the revs up around 1500rpm. In addition when shutting down the car that same night (I was 10 minutes from home) I noticed one of the turbos was significantly noisy on wind down when shutting off the engine. After letting the car cool down overnight it starts up fine, although once it gets to temp the revs start to creep up and down, the exhaust is darker than it should be and it also sounds like it’s running rich (fat note) I’ve put a new set of plugs in it - no change, the old plugs all seemed OK with two of them being somewhat richer/fueled up than the other 3 with 1 being borderline. I’ve smoked tested the intake system via the front of the Turbos, found a split vacuum hose going to the factory boost gauge sender, which I have since replaced.  Also found another leak on the gasket coming off the rear turbo outlet, have also replaced this. After fixing both of these leaks - still have the running rich issue. I’ve also tried another pair of AFM’s - no change here After pulling off the front turbo intake pipes, there is obvious shaft play in the front turbo, which now hisses loudly on light revvs although I can’t see why this would make the car run funny even under idle. I’m curious to know why it’s running rich before I potentially replace/rebuild turbos. The car is completely stock <50,000kms  other than an exhaust. Oil and coolant are all clear. I haven’t bothered with coil packs as it looks like they won’t be the issue due to condition of the plugs. Any help appreciated as I cry myself to sleep!
    • No probs at all. I used to love trying to dig up obscure info for those in need where possible going back 20+ years on SAU.  I did have another look and couldn't come up with any closer match. I'm leaning towards those skirts in your first pic are custom fitments, cut down/extended or from another car entirely and modded to fit an R34 sedan. I would've thought someone in Japan had them and taken a photo at some stage over the last 2 decades but there's nothing. Someone out there must know surely.
