Hey Guys and Girls,

This might be a very dum question but how importing is ABS break system on a Track.

Is it an advantage? I know how the ABS breaks work, but I can’t see how it can make much of a advantage on a track.

Thanks guys for your help.

I think an intelligent 4 channel abs system is quite good especially on the track, I think most on here would agree,

Flat spotting tyres is never a good thing. However I wasn't particularly impressed with the r32's abs system slow

And not all that clever. So I removed mine to shed some weight out of the front.

But on the Track would you press it so hard that the ABS would kick in. Just asking Because My GTR, The ABS has been removed. (Because onces in its life it had two big high mounted Turbos on it).

Iam going to do track days and just dont no if it worth putting a ABS system back on it.

After seeing pete Walsh from AMEC try another diff in his tt 300zx , on slicks, that did not have the sensor, and with his ABS disconnected, he was having all sorts of strife especially on the downhill into gumtree at Morgan park. The correct diff went back in straight away and no massive wheel lock ups.

It just went to show how modern cars rely so much on this sort of technology, here i am in a 30+ year old car, doing almost same lap times, and with no modern help like abs, it does make an average peddler look good, but when it is done by an OK driver in an old car, right on the limit of lockup into a corner, it is quite an eye-opener.

Yeah I think its a real good thing personally! I remember the electronics on mine failed at Phillip Island once and this was the result.

Having said that I deactivate my ABS for things like motokhana's / skidpans where I think it is a hinderence but on the track it's a god send.

We really the issue is safety. As Noel said, if you leave the track and ABS is connected, the ABS will stop the tyres locking on grass/gravel/kitty litter. Unfortunatetly the only way to get decent braking on a loose surface like them is to lock the wheels. So if you are in a bad situation and leave the track ABS can make it much worse...in fact there was a death in a race at phillip island that may not have occurred if ABS was disconnected.

Since then CAMS has made it legal to disconnect ABS if you want to in any category. And in Europe tracks are moving to tarmac run offs instead of gravel so ABS cars can still stop.

On the other hand, modern, fast acting ABS is a pretty good thing on the track. Like a lot of modern electrics it can make an average driver look pretty good under brakes. You still should brake until before it cuts in for stability, but if you get it wrong braking individual wheels can be really useful like at turn 2 at Oran Park.

Ahh well.....we had a good look into this years ago and gave up. There are a lot of differences.

ABS main unit (of course) 4 channel

ABS computer is in the attessa unit so you have to change that too

ATTESSA pumps are different

Wiring is different.

In the end it would be a total rewire so we gave up.

I think a R32 -> R33 ABS upgrade would be worth it. My R32 with big brakes locks the wheels, R32 just seems to be to slow to pick up diferences in wheel speed. But I think the R33 works reay well (granted it's only 3 channel), but where the R32 will lock up/have big wheel speed diferences, the R33 will pulse for like 1/2 a sec to stop this. I'm not sure if that makes sence, but i know what i mean

I'm wonding if R32 -> R33 ATTESSA/ABS will be any cheaper/easier than R32 -> R34?

Thanks guys for the info.

I guess i have to find a ABS system now. I just hope there not to dear to Buy. Thinking about upgranding my breaks soon just dont know what to, Need do some reserch.

What you guys recomened iam not looking for a Massive break like a AP Racing.

car for the street and maybe 5 track days a year.

Ben we were looking at 33 but I was sure it was 4 channel, maybe vspec is different? The R32 thing is horribly slow but that is good in a lot of ways, it will never be too obtrusive lol

Michael if the only thing you are missing is the ABS unit they are pretty common, in fact we have 1 or 2 around. But you probably need more like the brake lines as well. You are probably better to just go without unless you are ready for the stuffing around to get it all back in.

Best brakes for street and light track use are standard (maybe new lines and discs, definately with good quality fluid). If you want more than that you would be mad to go past the G4/D2 8 piston calipers and discs.

Definitely think the ABS sytem in the 32 is quite nice in the fact that it is a bit slower than the modern vehicle and in that sense unobtrusive. While the modern ABS systems are very quick and safe on the street, especially in combination with the raft of other vehicle stability systems that are incorporated, they are a bit annoying especially when used on track vehicles that have been upgraded with better pads. Brakes with higher initial bite really require quite a lot of pedal modulation to avoid ABS intrusion.........not really a problem with the R32.

^^ Agreed

My V35, which had Brembo's and upgraded pads, would be engaging ABS at the slightest touch on nearly every corner at Wakie. That being said it did give me extra confidence to brake at the last second.

But now you all have me worried cause my N1 has no ABS :-)

the big difference is the R32 system runs at 5Hz...the R33 system is 50Hz and the R34 is 100Hz.

this is why the R32 system is a snail...it looks at the wheel speed signal only 5 times a second! The R33 system is 10 times faster to react and the R34 system 20 times faster.

I all ready have slotted rear rotors and cross drilled front rotors, Grex Trust pads. Iam not going to do track days at a competive level. So i guess i might just keep what i have for now.

Cheers, Micahel.

Have driven the exact same R32GTR both with and without ABS my preference is no ABS...sure I could go deeper on some corners with the ABS but the balance/mid corner speed of the car was shot.....maybe I'm a bit old school but I don't like computor stuff trying to help me.

P.S. Would give my left nut for traction control in the wet sometimes though...lol!!!

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
