Hi, recently bought a N/A r33. Didn't come with an owners manual.

Just wondering if its ok to run the car with standard unleaded (91 Octane) or will this damage the car?

Filled it with premium (98 Octane) the first few fills and it drank a tank in less than 3 days, and i don't drive like a maniac at high revs either.

Its drinking the standard unleaded much more slowly which is good for the everyday driving i do and cheaper, but i just wanna know if this is ok for the car?

Your car is built for a higher octane (100?). I would use at least 95

E10 is good, its cheap and should hold off those nasty noises - until you start winding up the timing that is. Even better, E85

Do a search for fuel consumption, plenty on here about possible causes i.e. sensors, filters etc.

one of my mates used 91 octane fuel on his skyline and the engine went bang later. higher octane fuel reduces the chances of detonation which is why i only use BP Ultimate 98RON( WA doesnt have Shell optimax grrr :P ) more expensive fuel but better than expensive repairs.

I read somewhere that NA skylines were able to run on regular japanese fuel while the turbocharged versions ran on premium. Im pretty sure regular japanese fuel is 89 AKI which equates to around 94 octane so maybe try 95 octane? Keep in mind I know next to nothing about skylines so this may not be true

technically you shouldn't get any real difference in economy from regular to premium. the ecu reads how much air is going into the engine and puts in the set amount of fuel for that afm voltage and tps position. other things will affect economy much greater than the type of fuel. you don't just take into account what revs you are doing, but how far you push the accelerator down. someone flooring it but only reving to 3000rpm will use more fuel than someone who revs to 4000rpm but uses half the throttle percentage. also the O2 sensor controls the fuel economy at light throttle loads, so if that dies your economy goes bad. also if the thermostat is shot and your car takes for ever to come up to operating temp then you will get poor economy as well. or you could simply have a slightly dicky fuel gauge. then there is your driving environment. if you have to stop at traffic lights often then you will get poor economy compared to someone who drove the same trip but got a green light every time.

finally, you said that a tank was lasting you 3 days, but the more important information is: how many kms were you doing in those 3 days, and how many litres are you calling "a tank"? i have used a full tank of fuel in a day, but i also drove 600km on that tank.

agreed, you could say you used 2 tanks in one day - but if u were driving from brisbane to sydney that would be understandable..

so more info pls?

i would however stick to bp ultimate or mobile 8000 buddy

to me if you can afford to own an import / modified car, you can afford to put 98 octane fuel in it at least! It just never ceases to piss me off that though the price for unleaded can vary up to 20cpl, ultimate etc hovers around the 1.38-1.45 mark constantly!

When I had my NA 33, I always put V-Power in it for about 1.5years and I went to sell it, after the buyer has put a deposit down, I just put in cheap normal unleaded.

And straight away, I could notice the difference, the car's responce is so much more laggy.

As for mileage, I find putting 98 in, can get me more k's than normal unleaded.

Like he said, if you can afford modified car u can afford 98 octane fuel

    • Oh, also, forgot to add these photos I believe.
    • Thought i'd update on this. I was able to get in contact with Craig Lieberman and later on Darryl Alison (owner of Kaizo Industries). Darryl was able to help me verify that my car was in fact one of theirs and is helping me find more info on mine !
    • There's restrictor pills in the stock boost control hoses. That's how they set the amount that was bled off and hence the "high" boost setting. The usual mod in the day was to remove it and send the "high" boost setting up to about 14 psi.
    • Thanks Duncan, that's the best info I've read. Furthermore after learning about the PCM programming side controlling the factory boost solenoid, the purpose of the solenoid is to "bleed" boost when pin 25 is earthed, thus allowing spring pressure in the wastegate actuator to overcome diaphragm boost pressure, thus closing or reducing the position of the wastegate flap creating more boost as the turbo is able to spin faster. It's pretty cool to see a designated Pill to do exactly this, would have liked to have seen it with a tiny filter over the end for those moments in vacuum.  The constant bleed pill has now been removed completely from the system and solenoid boost control has been restored once again.   Case closed 😂
    • The wideband reading is meaningless if it's not running. Why are you using shitty old sidefeeds on any engine, let alone a Neo? What manifold and fuel rail are you using to achieve that? Beyond that, can't help you with AEM stuff as I've never been their ECU/CAS combo.
