Driven both.

260....awesome.....but will the woman like?....if she like a manual yes......only thing that stopped me is I new I was going to clock up K's and being a pre 2001 car I had to be realistic.

M35....have there problems but still a very good car.....perfect for every day use.

If I have had my choice again.....the 260.....just because I miss having a manual.

My missus loves driving mine, the clutch is a bit heavy but apart from that she loves it. Reckons its bit of a pain to park and yeah the front bumpers are very easily scraped etc, but other then that drive like any other manual wagon.

Fits the 10yr old and a baby seat in it fine.

If M35's where just a little bigger, or i could get a R35 front for one cheap then that would be the next car for the missus, but where going a new liberty.

What's wrong with the "Pokemon" or "Deer in the headlights" front end look! :bunny: I have to agree...butt ugly front end on the M35's.....my fellow M35 owners may disagree though.

Also, be prepared to lube up well for the Subaru dealer..

On the outside their nearly the same, but on the inside their alot bigger and thats where we need it the most.

Yeah im prepared to be getting shafted by the stealer... Might lease one yet thru my work yet, works out a little cheaper.

Im not knocking M35's!! Just want something new.

My misses loves our 260RS. It's our only car and she drives it to work everyday. We've taken it camping, long road trips, squirts up Mt Nebo, city traffic and it's happy to do all of the above. No problems loading it with 4 adults and a boot full of camping gear. Personally I don't think it's quite a 'hard core race car' as people say it is. It's aggresive when you want it to be, but quite civilised for day to day driving. The suspension is firm, but quite comfortable. The interior is all good quality.

My only qualms with it is that it's too heavy. To be totally honest I wanted a GTR and I still feel a little ripped off by the added weight of the wagon (it guzzles fuel, too), but right now we can't afford 2 cars and the 260RS is a fantastic comprimise. I suggested to the wife that we get her something more fuel efficient and get me a GTR and she said she didn't think she could go back to anything slower. She certainly loves that car. I busted her in high boost the other day. She said 'the air was cold and the car was going well'. Hahaha

Oh yeah, we're both short arses (she's 153cm, I'm 163cm) and we have no problem with the seats. Must look like midgets in that massive car though...

RWD, 3.5L N/A compared to AWD, 2.6L twin turbo.

My wife is 150cm. Looks outrageous when she drives my M35.

How's Ian and Steve though!!!....at full adjustment they still have to sit on a milk crate and use a pogo stick for brake and accelerator !!! :D

Seeing your wife wont let you sell the car you could compromise with replacing a few under performing parts. I've not spent much more than 10K in buying parts for mine and am getting 400HP at the wheels, it doesn't feel heavy anymore.

so i drove an M35 AR-X on the weekend

pretty smooth ride, nice big boot

also had a look at (didn't get to drive) a 260RS but also just a WC34 RS Four

(we did also look at a Mitsubishi Legnum and Toyota Caldina, but the boot space was limited compared to a Stagea)

having sat in the 260RS, i think the wife would prefer the newer M35, but there was a blue WC34 that caught her eye a little

so now it looks like the short list is M35 AR-X vs. WC34 RS Four.

will need to do some more driving.

what's fuel consumption like on the VQ25 DET vs. RB25 DET Neo?

note the AR-X obviously has different suspension to the RS/RX's but I'm not sure on how much difference that makes to how they each drive...

I used to own a 1999 stagea (series 2) and when it was stock, fuel economy was around the 13-14L/100km mark.

I now drive a 2003 M35 so I can very unscientifically compare them and say that I'm now averaging 12.5-13L/100km (same state, similar traffic).

Now for a general comparison - the M35 is a better car than the C34 in almost every way. Faster, more comfortable ride, slightly better on fuel, bigger fuel tank, more rear-seat legroom, one extra gear (5sp auto), more modern shape, better interior incl more comfortable seats, more boot space incl space under the boot floor.

I could keep going but I'm already sounding biased enough. Check out the first page of the "M35 Info" thread (sticky) at the top of the stagea section for more info on the M35.

The C34 is possibly more of a sports wagon and has more aftermarket/performance parts all readily available, whereas the M35 is more of a luxury wagon (although it is quicker as well) and a bit rarer.

As for which one you prefer, drive both. Thats the only way.

I disagree that the liberty is bigger. The boot shape on the M35 may be ugly and like a volvo but its practical and maximises the amount of space. Other wagons like the subaru's and the holden sportwagon lose a lot of boot space in the interest of styling.

Maybe there's more seating room? but the M35 is by no means cramped.

But yeah I like the subaru wagons - I just dont think they're as good value as the M35. The M35 can pretty much match it featurewise, with 3 main advantages - they're cheaper, have rear-biased awd, and a turbo. There's my bias showing through again :)

    • What an awesome idea to fit the facelift Lamborghini Diablo headlights. They are a perfect fit!
    • An update regarding the registration with the DVLA I sent off the paperwork the day after I collected the car from the port, two weeks later it was all returned with a letter explaining they have rejected the application. This was because the cheque was £20 short for the road tax (I used a price list I found online). Nevermind it is what it is, it was sent back to them the following day with a new cheque. Fast forward another 2 weeks or so, I called them for an update to be told it had been rejected. Yesterday (16th September) I received the documents back along with another letter, this time it was because I didn't put an X in one box on the V750 (personalised number plate certificate), which declared that I had the rights to the personalised number plate. Why this wasn't mentioned in the first rejection letter, I don't know, but it could have saved this headache. The documents were sent back today, so fingers crossed third times a charm and it'll FINALLY be registered on the road just in time for the bad weather (woohoo!) To cheer myself up I lowered the front 25mm, was sick of seeing it sit like a monster truck. No idea how much clearance I'll have getting on and off the driveway, I'll worry about that when I can actually drive it

    • A few little updates that weren't filmed due to not taking long to do or not interesting enough for their own video. My new K&N Air Filter arrived, I went with an RU-4180 which matched the dimensions of the universal cone filter the car originally had.  The battery had gone flat, while that was charging I tidied up the spaghetti wiring at the bulk head and down the sides of the engine Next job was to swap the stereo The Kenwood harness had the female ISO plugs cut off and the male ISO plugs cut off the adaptor loom and joined with bullet connectors. I ordered in a repair loom through work and re-did it all. New Kenwood unit installed (Android Auto, DAB, Bluetooth, Reverse Camera) The bonnet/hood gas struts have been poor since collecting the car. I couldn't find any suitable replacements locally so took a chance on a pair from AliExpress.  The originals don't use a retaining clip to secure the cup onto the ball fixture, would explain why I struggled for 10-15mins trying to pry off the cups. The ball fixtures unscrew using a 12mm spanner, new ones are the same size. Sadly no photo of them fitted, you're not missing much lol The dished Momo steering wheel got replaced with my Momo Tuner, turns out I ordered counter sunk bolts for the horn trim ring (like they normally are for the steering wheel) instead of allen cap (flat seat)  A terrible photo of a Quaife style gear shift knob I've had stashed in my tool box for many years after purchasing the incorrect thread size (I can see a pattern emerging with ordering incorrect parts...) Also threw in a cup holder and a (empty) Boss Coffee can, because why not  
    • GT-R clearly the better choice! The 300 is certainly not insaly fast but has a decent amount of poke. Does a nice little drift around the corners with a decent amount of throttle. It's VERY predictable in a slide too.  Feels so progressive! People probably presume there's a 25 year old driving it based on my behaviour this week! 🤣
