I think they should both give up... good job ruining a good research thread :)

Hasn't been completely ruined, it's just elevated the question of quality.

LSX had new rims that didn't last 6 months.

Yes it's a 1700 kg R35 and capable of huge wheel loads.

ROTA ARE ADVERTISING THEIR NEW RANGE AS RACE WHEELS !

Given safety is paramount, this is an area where they could really end up in trouble.

If someone or several people die due to wheel failure and can be proven to be a manufacture fault, and directly responsible for the incident, they could end up in a monumental law suit, however track disclaimers would probably save them.

Now Rota are on the up and up, clearly sales are increasing world wide.

I'm still considering some and have been following these discussions closely, not only in Australia, they're everywhere, and constantly recurring.

Yes there are heaps of Rotas around, and more and more people are enjoying amateur motorsport, but the bottom line is, these discussions WILL eventually get back to Rota headquarters and they'd want to bloody well discuss it.

Look at this positivley.

Guys PLEASE let me do my homework before you slander a forum sponsor. I've posted this info so others an see a potential outcome of running such rims on a 1700kg car, with slicks, running say 1:02's around wakefield, with 1mm caliper clearance. I believe these wheels have taken a lot of punishment and extreme heat (here are my brembo's after superlap for reference) it's possible/likely i have pushed these wheels beyond their intended purpose to be frank.

Speaking of which Duncan, when are you going to bring these in so we can see them? I have sent your photos to Rota and they want to see more. I imagine that they will replace them once they are satisfied they haven't been driven into any gutters.

I may get time to drop them off soon Ben. The rims have been "smashed" around a lot, i dont expect warranty.

I am glad someone said for those two guys to stop shitting on at each other,no offence but i started reading all this to see about the rota rims.is nothing better than when someone can give good feedback on what they use.i am running a 33 gtr at the moment run michelin slicks car weighs 1750 and i am pushing it hard 57.7 on the sprint track at Q.R and 58.6 at lakeside.i have been interested in this topic as i broke afront right hand tri spoke set of advans at Q.R on the national track on the 15th july,i was braking hard and turning into turn 4 and bang, one of the spokes snapped clean.I had been running these wheels for over 6 years,so probably fatigue ,so i have put my slicks onto my rota wheels.iam about to buy some new ones for the slicks and just use the rotas for wet weather.anyway very interesting.

what model tri-spoke advans?

tri-spoke is generally a pretty bad design, less distribution of spoke strength, i personally wouldnt run any of the tri-spoke models on a hard track car i dont think any, maybe the super advans, maybe, are really track orientated. although 6 years isnt that bad i guess, i still dont like the idea of wheels failing without incident.

Shock horror! a rim (other than Rota) fails? surely not! fwiw, a few people have told me about various rims cracking like yours. It happens. Just dont bother posting details, the keyboard eggsperts will delight in lecturing the how/why/wherefores, how and where you obviously went wrong, and thus how it could never happen to them.

It's the first and last time i'll bother, that's for sure.

Funnily enough i actually spoke to simmons wheels a while back about doing this; went to go down there for a measure session.. just before they closed their doors forever! But handbrake (on these forums) just got some from ccw wheels; i may go down that path as soon as his reports experience with them (they are 18's fwiw, and he's running slicks too). They are probably the "best" option, with far superior clearance vs any of the rays stuff.

Another great alternative would be the SSR range (SP1, MS1, VS1 etc etc). They are an extremely strong (stronger than Simmons) and light multi-piece wheel that can be custom built to your specifications.

The best bet would be to contact Jesse Streeter in Japan ([email protected] or jessestreeter.com) and have him get a custom set built to suit R35 GT-R in either 18 or 19 inch as you require.

Will be far better service and prices than the crap on offer in Australia :blink:

Overall I must say that 80% of this thread is a joke. Nisskid may get on some people's nerves about the way he approaches these things, but for the most part he is generally correct. There are plenty of members on here that have proven their lack of intelligence and proven they have no idea whatsoever regarding the issues at hand.

Yet they resort to name calling like children and mocking others that are correct, while they are wrong.

why are people comparing these rims to te37 and other high end wheels when they are more then double the price of these rims and obviously better quality. these should be compared with wheels on the lower end of the market such as work emotions. im sure if they received alot of track work the will probably crack too as they're just a cast rim also.

I would hardly consider the Emotions and the Rotas in the same barrel. The quality are completely different levels.

The majority of enkei rims are cast and are often confused with forget rims, they are also light and strong.

Rays engineering also makes cast rims for gram lights and others.

Enkei also use a completely different production method and high quality materials that eliminate the cheap and nasty issues found with the basic crap.

They are nowhere near the same.

Hardly the point lol. The wheels are NOT race wheels and not up to the loading the 35 puts on them using slicks.

It's not a bad thing against Rota. They're cheap wheels, for cheap uses.

High end motorsport is not their intention. So they shouldn't be used for it.

I've got no ill feelings toward against Nisskid et al, but...

How many of you can honestly say you have never investigated the potential of a cheaper alternative, done some research and inquiry and decided to go with the cheaper option??!

i agree with you, hence why i never did the i told you so thing, i think it takes balls to post up after it all, i only came back in here to counter a few people who started defending the failure as if it was OK. it's not ok to have wheels that fail simply from hard use, whether it's ROTA's or another brand.

i do it all the time, hence why i dont mind buying the cheaper FMIC's etc, but when it comes to things like wheels and suspension components, there is enough evidence out there to say that they do break, maybe i'll be lucky, maybe i wont, but f**ked if im gonna risk it when it's what's holding me to the road at over 150k's.

I can't speak for the other ssr models but the sp1's are not by any means light, and brake clearance is a real problem!

Brake clearance should be no problem with the different hi and lo disc spoke options.

    • You will now be able to lift the parcel shelf trim enough to get to the shock cover bolts; if you need to full remove the parcel shelf trim for some reason you also remove the escutcheons around the rear seat release and you will have to unplug the high stop light wiring from the boot. Next up is removal of the bracket; 6 nuts and a bolt Good news, you've finally got to the strut top! Remove the dust cover and the 3 shock mount nuts (perhaps leave 1 on lightly for now....) Same on the other side, but easier now you've done it all before
    • OK, so a bunch of trim needs to come off to get to the rear shock top mounts. Once the seat is out of the way, the plastic trim needs to come off. Remove 2 clips at the top then slide the trim towards the centre of the car to clear the lower clip Next you need to be able to lift the parcel shelf, which means you need to remove the mid dark trim around the door, and then the upper light trim above the parcel shelf. The mid trim has a clip in the middle to remove first, then lift the lowest trim off the top of the mid trim (unclips). At the top there is a hidden clip on the inner side to release first by pulling inwards, then the main clip releases by pulling the top towards the front of the car. The door seal comes off with the trim, just put them aside. The the lighter upper trim, this is easy to break to top clips so take it carefully. There is a hidden clip towards the bottom and another in the middle to release first by pulling inwards. Once they are out, there are 3 clips along the rear windscreen side of the panel that are hard to get under. This is what the rear of the panel looks like to assist:
    • Yes. Autos typically work from the speed sensor on the pinion shaft of the diff. I also think that even if you have a proper speed sensor for the bog manual in the manual box, that the signal it outputs is not compatible with the auto dash anyway. You should consult that manual (the book, not the gearbox).
    • And I just realised that that advice is slightly nonsensical for a GTR, because you need 2 of them. But it is otherwise true.
    • Having had a reasonable look at the car, I'll be able to remove the (one time) rams and retract the hinge (they are held in the down location by a tiny (m3?) sacrificial screw) which will get it physically back in shape. From there if you remove the rams you need a resistor to turn off the airbag light (as Mark said, there are plug in kits and I might go that way because its reversible). And...per all the threads on here, even if you have the resistors to turn off the airbag light, the bonnet light will stay on as it writes to the airbag computer history - that is either replace the airbag controller, reprogam the EPROM (if I can work out how), or remove the globe from the dash. Having seen how sensitive this system is, if I had my time over I'd pre-emptively remove the rams, even on a road car, because this is all a very unnecessary pain in the arse. Reminds me, time to go and have a look at the Fuga too....
