Just have to move the factory Stagea tranny oil cooler and wanted to know if there is anything I need to avoid?

Like does it have to be the same height as it was before? Or will the oil pressure sort that out?

I am thinkingg of relocating it to a lower position underneath the drivers side headlight cause our front bar has a big vent there, sound reasonable enough ? I am guessing I nneed to top up trans fluid , but do I need to bleed the system of air ?

Just need to consider that there is no air flow there when stationary, no clutch fan flow. So it will be slightly hotter in traffic than factory position. Also consider cutting out slots at the back to increase the air flow, (see intercooler side). My cooler (larger aftermarket one) is mounted there with a motorbike fan on the back, manual and temp switch (in the tran sump) operated. Did this because FM intercooler got in the way of factory trans cooler.

Nothing else, height etc to consider, biggest headache is customising mounts/brackets.

Since I do a lot of heavy towing in QLD, am going to mount another cooler in similar position as factory one and run the 2 in parallel, not series which adds strain to the oil pump.

This is how my (_stock_) trans' cooler is mounted on my series 2 RS Four. The relocation was done by MV Automatics (Adelaide). I don't do any towing, but I also had a heavy-duty high stall torque convertor upgrade done at the same time.

I've noticed it takes a little bit longer (maybe few minutes) to warm up in the morning and start changing into 4th/overdrive, which tells me that moving at least, it has better cooling capacity than stock. Feels warm after a drive; used to get rather warm before though. No trouble after ~6 months.

Good point regarding the lack of airflow when the car is at a stand still, something I might need to consider. The car does not see any towing duties and to be honest rarely has more than 2 people in it, but still worth considering a small thermo fan setup like you suggested. Oddly enough as fate would have it , the bracket that I removed from the factory Intercooler is a PERFECT fit for the 2 mounting lugs on the side of the factory Tranny cooler, and oddly enough the other side of the bracket seems perfectly bent to fit under the steel bumper ( are they even called bumpers anymore?? ) so I just need to test fit the front bar and get some extension hose for the cooler and I should be right to go !

Fingers crossed that when I get the front bar meshed again you shouldnt be able to see much of the oil cooler at all.

Considering that the cooler will probably get MORE airflow when the car is moving do you think a small thermo will be needed?

Regarding Draining the oil when I remove the factory oil cooler, whats the best way of doing that? If I remove one side of the hose ( so it gets some air in the system ) will it then drain back into the transmission? or is it just going to piss everywhere?

Cheers Sean. Yes I was pretty happy - you don't notice it at all down there really unless you know it's there; it's recessed a fair way. They didn't have to remove the front bar to fit it either. I discovered that if you remove the driver's headlight (which doesn't require removing the front bar, just the grille) you get better access so I think they may have done that.

Well after reading the PWR instructions on this cooler I just got it makes it pretty clear its supposed to be a SUPPLIMENT to the existing oil cooler not a REPLACEMENT oil cooler. Fck !

Stop taking those drugs! When you buy something you can do whatever you want with it. Ask your self why you bought it. I gather you bought it because you couldn't find a way to mount your current cooler in a different position so you are going to replace it with a comparable unit. So go ahead and do what you want - you are the master of your Stagea! The S1 Stagea has a tiny exterior cooler and I REPLACED it with the aftermarket one because it was bigger. You are not looking for more cooling you just want to relocate it and the new one you bought is roughly comparable to the stock S2 one so go ahead and fit it where you want. IT will be OK!!!

slight thread hijack, but is there a way to tell (outside of a temp gauge) if the oil is getting too hot, before the tranny dies? i know absolutely nothing about auto transmissions (except that they are hideously complex)... should i be on the lookout for flare between gears? bad changes? etc?

The short answer is no (that I know of anyway). The symptoms you describe would suggest that damage has already ocurred. The other thing to look for is brownish atf -not just dirty but burnt looking. Nearly all auto trans failures are caused by overheating so unless you already have a decent cooler in addition to the heat exchanger in the radiator your car would probably benefit from an aftermarket cooler (and a change of atf for a quality synthetic one).

I guess as part of my job I need to think logically. The S2 stagea trans cooler is quite large. Perhaps 50-60mm thick ?

And at a guess maybe 200mm x 120 mm. Having said that I am looking for comparable cooling, and I just dont think I am going to get that from a cooler ( PWR ) that is much thinner ( 19 mm ) and perhaps 50% larger surface area again than the factory one. I guess I want to make sure the part is fit for purpose you know? Sure I CAN install it , but will it do the job?

understand what your saying sean,and ive taken onboard the good advice so far in this thread.in addition to relocating my trans cooler and swapping the core for a larger one im also going to install a motorbike thermo fan to the back of the trans cooler basically as a safety precaution.i dont tow at all but do occasionally get heavy traffic heading to work.will hopefully have time to spend on it tomorrow,as its 40+ in adelaide today :down:

Yours are the same reasons that I was concerned about my cooler; when I was investigating getting my cooler relocated, I was eventually going to be paying for a new cooler (about $160 I think it would have cost extra) however when I took the car in to MV's the standard cooler was larger than expected, and Mike said it would be fine for the job (with the high stall convertor as well). So we used that, and I saved on a new cooler. I think there are some mounting points around the standard cooler which can be utilised to mount it just like a DC kit or similar.

Each cooler has free air through the front bar. I have cut a hole about 200mm square out of the plastic inner guard and replaced it with expanded aluminum mesh to allow the air to travel through.

The 6cyl PWR cooler fits PERFECTLY in the position of the old cooler. You just need to drill one hole on the PWR cooler to make it fit and you are done,

Here are a few pics. Does anyone think that the bend in the hose for the top connection is a bit too tight in the radius of the bends?

Don't feel better about putting in an aluminium radiator. The main purpose of the heat exchanger in the radiator is to raise the temp of the atf to optimum operating temp asap given that the vast majority of trips are short.

I understand the need for the heat exchanger but the coolant in the radiator won't flow until the thermostat opens regardless of the size of the radiator. Here in QLD it can get to zero in winter and rise to over forty in summer. In winter I can see the need for the heat exchanger in the radiator so the plan after new year is to go to the local wreckers and pick up an old copper radiator with the auto line in it and cut it open to see what it looks like (straight pipe or fined). If it is a straight pipe I will buy an aluminum radiator and have it modified then I should have the best of both worlds (unless someone knows where I can get one ready maid)

After paying ($2,800) to have my auto overhauled I want to treat it right.

    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.      
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
