Yeh I cant see the point in spending so much on a high end ecu when something lesser will do the job fine. This is only a weekend/fun car.

Ill look at the ecu options abit later on anyway. I got enough little things to sort out at the moment.

I got around to pressure testing the piping system. I think ive found out why the boost was not holding in a flat lined state. I have discovered in total 5 boost leaks lol! Two from intercooler hose joints, one just before the throttle body and the other at the first joint after the discharge port. Those two are both quite substantial, though easily fixed. There is one coming from the plenum, the block off plate I made to bolt inplace of the idle control valve, I once again used 3J aviation gasket paste there and it appears to have blown out, so I will need to threebond that shit on. The last two leaks are coming from the bypass valve. There is one small leak coming from around the throttle shaft where there is a small gap eachside of the blade right where the bearings are pressed in. You can blow through it with your own breathe, so that air is leaking and being returned back into the intake. That may be acceptable, I would have thought not but I need to find out for sure. Now the last leak is coming from the actuator housing, where the arm comes out it also leaks boost when its shut. It absolutely pisses out from around there. Im guessing the diaphram is damaged or something as im sure its not supposed to leak that much. Either I got a dodgy unit or they are meant to be like that.

Pretty well all of this could have been avoided had I gone to the effort to pressure test it all like I had planned before the tuning. When tired, I just pulled the "ahh she be right mate" it cant be too bad lol. Well fark was I wrong there.

So im curious to know just how better things might get with all the leaks fixed up, including the bypass valve.

After some more research last night, I discovered that plumb back bov's apparently work pretty well as bypass valves! Will look at giving one a try to replace my current one. Hopefully it works out!

Also found some info on sound deadening. Some sort of wrap that you put around the intercooler pipes and it keeps the noise in. Also found something about a Helmholtz resonator. Some air canister that links from the outlet of the supercharger and it cancels out noise by holding the air...Will have to look into that abit more if it will help!

most of the CAPA Vortech supercharger kits run the ole plastic Bosche valve, you would prob need 2 with a positive displacement blower though, KKR do an alloy version of it too, and it comes with 3 different springs.

both are 25mm inlet and outlet. hence my suggestion of using 2 of the buggers.

So I fixed the two hose leaks. Got some better clamps and aligned the piping better. Also fixed the leak from the inlet manifold. The standard gasket that sits under the idle control valve wasnt sealing properly with the block off plate over it. Used some threebond instead. I thought I had put 3J on it, but turns out I just re used the factory gasket. Eitherway its not leaking anymore :) However I have discovered a new leak in the throttle body. Its leaking past the shaft and out around the tps drive. Hopefully I can get some sort of O ring to seal around the shaft and under the drive adaptor I made.

So many leaks....Its no suprise the power was down and it wouldnt hold stable boost!

I changed the bypass valve to a turbosmart 38mm plumb back bov last night and cut the spring down so it works....Its alot more progressive now. The driveability has increased a shit load! But I cut the spring abit too much and its bleeding boost off up high lol. Can only achieve 1.2 bar now  Hopefully some shims under the spring will help that issue.

Still waiting on my cooling mist WMI kit to come from the states.

Funny you should mention that, I actually tried hooking up the bleed valve to the old bypass valve and it didnt make much difference. I may try hooking it upto the bov and see what it does. I still need to shim it. It only needs just enough so it stays closed under full boost.

If none of this works as well as I want, then Ill just have to hook up my old wastegate and plumb it up as I was originally advised by StockyMcstock who successfully twincharged his vl 3-4 years ago. Atleast I know his method will work. In hindsight I should have just taken his advice! I seem to naturally do things the hardway!

I went and had a look at this on Sunday....WOW!

The amount of fabrication work involved is unbelievable, Well done Mike.

At idle it sounds like a rutting red stag but at full noise it sounds like a chainsaw on rhoids..."Its stock officer" :bunny:

Thanks Noel. Am I still good to tag along on Sunday?

Just a small update, Im finally in the process of fitting up the power steering pump. I have the pump mounted, just need to plumb up the lines and do the wiring! Then fingers crossed she works and I have some proper power steering again :D I will get some pictures of all this and try to document it well as I know there are people who have been curious about setting up a EHPS system in a skyline.

Hell yeah mike. Meetup is at aspley hypermarket at 8 a.m.

Saweeeet! Sunday is going to be awesome! So long as I dont get pulled up lol....

Also Noel do you have a contact number for this gonzo character so I may try and get one of these uber resonators please?

not yet but I'm working on it.

i know for a fact that a nice big 16x11x8" muffler will fit on the back of an R33, combined with the decent sized mid muffler you have now that should take a lot of the noise out, i know on a turbo skyline one of them mufflers and a hotdog will get a 3" exhaust to legal levels. (as mine is a 16x11x6 + hotdog mid muffler and reads 89db @ 4000, 92db @ idle)

Being NA it will be a bit harder to make quiet but you can always go a custom huge muffler if off the shelf sizes dont take enough out.

I think mike is takin the piss Titan. No way on earth can you hear a top fuel exhaust over the banshee wails of that supercharger. :)

I should see how many dbs it actually is to start with. But with those two mufflers I have now, they dont seem to be enough. I was thinking of using the muffler off the race car which is quite good, but it is huge, possibly similiar in size to what you are describing. Bu l ike you said, it is NA now and its fricken loud whilst cruising and it just gets exponentially louder as the charger starts forcing more and more air through it.

My main priority is to try and quiten down the induction noise because it is just rediculous!

I still owe a few videos of it going. I havent gotten around to it yet. Hopefully on the weekend :)

    • Just don’t be silly enough to think it’ll never happen either
    • I take it that you bought the centre to suit the GTR axles? As in there was a plan, not just somehow lucky that it worked? It all looks excellent, by the way.
    • New engine block time. Up to you whether you want to keep going down this road with this project. Unfortunately a lot of these cars are like this. The road to getting these cars into decent shape is long and not fun for reasons that you're discovering.
    • Essay time. First things first, an RB running stock turbo and boost levels shouldn't get so bad as to stall from reversion if the recirc valve has been deleted. Should get a little fluffy and annoying, but in my experience, not so bad as to stall. Of course, every car is a bit different, so it remains possible that stalling will happen. So, running with no recirc valve is somewhat of an option, for otherwise stock stuff. Atmo BOVs cause all sorts of shit, even on an otherwise stock setup. Only gets worse the higher the boost and the bigger the turbo. At that point you really need to go for a different ECU and no AFM. Rebuilding the stock recirc valve configuration is not hard. You just need a stock or aftermarket BOV with the appropriate adapter for the 2 bolt flange on the back of the J pipe, and to get/make an appropriate ~1" pipe to get the air back to the turbo inlet, and to possibly modify the inlet (if it is not stock) to take the recirc pipe back in. Not hard. Just takes some cutting and welding. Putting an R35 type AFM into the car anywhere is not as simple as just buying the AFM and throwing it in. You will also need to buy the appropriate boss that will then need to be welded onto the pipe where you're installing it. You can clearly see why by looking at the photo posted above. They are not a "simple" swap for a stocker. You can't put on in place of the stock AFM. You can put one in place of the stock AFM, if you get the mounting boss and weld it to some pipe and otherwise make that pipe piece work like the stock AFM housing. Or you can buy such an adapter, either complete with the 4 bolt flange for the air box, or without, for varying degrees of work needed to then make it fit your stock airbox or some pod filter or whatever you have going on. Oh, and the R35 AFM is not plug and play. The wiring is different, but changing that is trivial. The plug is also different so you either end up repinning the original wires onto the new plug, or you just use a short adapter. If you weld a boss to the cold side pipe, the cold side pipe really wants to be 3", otherwise the scaling on the meter can get a bit weird, but whatever the pipe size, it's not as easy as just using the (fully documented in the Nistune doco) simple method for choosing R35 AFM in X" pipe size in the software, because the scaling will already be a bit different. Anyway, all of this has been comprehensively worked through on the Nistune forums, so there is full knowledge available. I would use a Link/Haltech before I would bother putting an AFM into a cold side pipe. That's a lot of effort for a bodge. Nistune is great, can work well even at fairly high power levels, but you are stuck with the limitations of it being the stock ECU, which includes needing to use an AFM, which is not always convenient for every set of modifications. You have to have a think about what you already have, what you want to have, and decide early if you'd be better off jumping ship to an aftermarket ECU. This so you don't waste time and money doing things 2 or 3 times. Never heard of ECUmaster. Sounds like a backyard operation. If there are good tuners for it where you are, and it is a solid product, then it will be fine. We're only talking about an R engine here. Back in the day they all ran on crude nasty early 90s ECUs and they were fine. You don't need a rocket surgeon's ECU to run one.
    • So left off with high hopes of having a gearbox in pretty quickly........ Got the adapter plate that week and had to chase a few threads and work out how/where everything goes as no instructions. Got the adapter fitted, test fitted gearbox and found had to cut and shave a few things. Tunnel required some hits with a decent hammer to give some clearance on passenger side but it fits with no problems,  could fit a 8hp70 with a little more work. For a cross member I wasn't going to spend $1100 on so shiny machined piece. Went through a few designs and remembered I had a gktech s chassis to cd00# cross member. Fitted that and found its close enough with a few extra bits welded so have gone that way and still a work in progress.  After this got into modifying the intercooler with some bends and clamps. I was procrastinating on this as was not keen to cut up and weld it myself but happy with the outcome.  Onto the radiator shroud and oil cooler mount. This thing took way longer than I thought it would but having to add an extra oil cooler for the trans and wanting everything within the chassis rails its good enough for now. It mounts to the chassis and gives plenty of room for lines and pipes. All the coolers are rubber mounted and sealed the shroud on the top and sides, will use some tape to seal the bottom gap of about 10mm. 20250508_111500.mp4   Next job was to build the new diff and after a delay with a friend got built this week. I ended up putting it all together with supervision and was good to learn how to set one up correctly. I ended up going a 3.69 ratio, nismo 1.5 way gt pro with gtr Axel's. Stripped it all down, gave all the parts a good clean, pressed on new bearings and set backlash. Was good working in a clean assembly room with all the gear. Once got home wire wheeled the case and hit it with some rollbar/chassis black paint. Got a few more bits done but will leave them for the next update.
