Hi guys,

Thought Id ask some opinions and advice on here regarding an incident last night.

I was driving after 9 pm (already dark) on Calder freeway towards the city. It was the section just after where you get off Melton hwy (Taylors Lakes) and jump onto Calder fwy.

I exited the ramp and jumped onto Calder fwy. I am pretty sure its still 100 KM/h zone there and then 2 or 3 KMs down the fwy it becomes an 80 KM zone.

Now I was doing about 115-17 KMs when about 100 meters ahead of me I spotted a marked cop car parked in the middle, between left and right lanes, in the bushes section of the road (there are trees and lots of grass there). The cop car was parked on an angle like this: \.

As soon as I saw the cop car, I slowed right down to 80 KM/h, so when I actually crossed the position of the cop car I was doing 80.

I was in the far right lane and the cop car's left hand side, on an angle was facing my lane, so in order for them to shine the radar at me, it would have been pretty awkward.

I did not see any camera flashes and the left front passenger window was up in the cop car.

I am wondering about a couple of things:

1. If the zone was 80 KMs/h and I was doing 115, that's 35 KM/h over the limit, would they have chased me? As I understand that would be hooning according to new laws.

2. When cops use mobile speed cameras like in the situation above, do they monitor BOTH left and right lanes or do they only watch the lane where the driver's right hand side is facing? I mean if the cops were monitoring the left side of the road with a radar, they would have a stiff neck as it would be very uncomfortable for them to keep shining the camera to the left. Unless off course they just simply put down fixed mobile cameras that do the work them.

I am a bit paranoid if I got done doing 117 in an 80 zone... I can take the 117 in a 100 zone...

Any advice from previous experience?

Ive been always good, got all my 12 points and haven't had a speeding fine since I can remember.

Ive uploaded a diagram also.

Cheers

if it was a marked car and you were speeding he/she would of came after you.

if you get a letter in the mail about you speeding, ask for a photo, if he/she cant produce one, they can stick it,

cause from what i know he/she needs your license and license number as hard facts you were driving the car if he pulled you over, so they can sign the fine straight to your name.

so if they cant issue a photo of my car for a speeding fine then they cant prove the case against me? and if I did not see any flashes, would that mean there was no photo taken? or do they use other means of recording evidence (video)?

I wouldn't worry, they likely would have given chase if they wanted to nab you, and at that speed they definitely would have given chase. Chances are they didn't check your speed and they were distracted with something else. Generally they would monitor both lanes in the direction they are monitoring.

Yup, if it was not a mobile speed trapping unit (like the wagons or SUVs with the bullbars on the front and the dedicated camera (passenger) seat) I would say you're fine, as they would have given chase.

na it looked like a standard police commodore... either an SS or an omega.

YEAA!, Your fine mate, i almost got done aswell I was going about 65km on a 50zone i saw the police marked car i qickly slowed down and then he didnt chase me i was wondering whys.. because when i saw him i think i came down doveton hill to fast &when he was too busy doing something then i saw him put it up, Lucky me and i thnk ur the same buddi ur Fine...! Just be carefull next time :D

I got done there once for 105 in 100, and this was over 10 years ago and they chased me (i was in an EF Falcon) so I'd say you're right. They always sit there and ususally a radar will chase you especially at night as they won't be able to read your number plate at those speeds. You may have been lucky and he may not have had the radar up and ready or may have been scanning another car.

safer THAN houses Mark :)

i had a police radar firmly fixed on me the other morning, rolling down a hill in a 50 zone doing about 60. i slowed down and just cruised right by him and he didn't do anything :\ so i think you're safe haha

ull b alright man,

if u havnt been flashed, or if u didnt get chased u got effin lucky hard lol

that position is common for cops and its awkward like u said but very easy to chase.

and they wont had video, not like arthur's seat cruise lol

    • Update 2: Today I'm f**king pissed. Some of you probably saw my thread that I opened shortly after joining this forum, "urgently need expert/experienced opinion", in which I discussed the possibility of a porous RB26 engine block which I also found hard to believe. Currently both turbos are out since the shitty braided line that was installed by whoever fitted the GT28 turbos leaked oil onto the exhaust. Today while working on the cam covers to put new gaskets and half moons in, I cleaned the side of the engine block with brake cleaner. Some time later I saw that it was still glistening with oil or coolant so I dried that off. But it was wet again shortly after. Verdict: I'm royally screwed. What you can see here (hopefully, despite shit resolution), circled in red, is a crack above the turbo oil feed. Extent is a few cm long and basically goes from #3 cylinder wall to #4 cylinder wall. It slowly lets coolant through, even without any pressure behind it. I am absolutely dumbfounded as to how this crack even formed, especially since it isn't along the cylinder as it usually is but rather a horizontal crack. Probably a few cm in length. Not sure on how to deal with this issue right now. Most likely, the only true fix is a new engine block, and even a relatively well done temporary fix requires at least a full engine teardown. Neither of those really fit my timetable right now, the car has been in my buddy's garage long enough as it is. I'm open to suggestions, but I'll be looking into ordering a new 05U block soon so I have one ready for the coming year, or whenever the current block inevitably fails fully. (Most likely once the crack reaches one of the frost plugs) I think it'd be a waste of money and time to rebuild the engine with this block. Oh and I found a rust hole on the side pocket of the trunk, which someone covered up with sealant goop, a piece of number plate and bodywork filler. Fun times. So far for every issue we fix we just find a new one that is arguably worse.
    • I have not found this no. I put one back on a couple days ago with no drama. I agree they are tight, but no need to remove anything.
    • That is gates blue racing belt
    • Anyone found gates blue racing to be extremely tight/ almost impossible to install without moving the exhaust gear
