Save a little more and find a 2003-05 corolla sportivo.

Has the 141kw celica motor, 6 speed manual, nice induction noise.

Climate control, leather etc.

coilovers, exhaust, semi's= good little track/daily..

there is a black 2005 [facelift-better looking] for sale for $13-14k on carsales

its done a few klms 114k or so and looks to be without its original alloys.

Might be a rough example, hard to say without seeing it in the flesh.

don't be misled by the higher power output of th celica motors. the power is all up top. actual performance wise they aren't really any quicker then a SSS pulsar with 36kw less power. the reason being that the corolla makes a touch more torque (1nm more), but it does it at about 2000rpm higher. the pulsar makes peak torque at 4800 rpm while the corolla doesn't make it until 6800rpm. my friend has a celica and she says that out pulsar (which has extractors and exhaust) is much faster than her car is.

vn commodores are actually down around the 1300kg mark, which is the same as a skyline.

+1 with extractors, cold air intake and a free flowing exhaust you can get 100-120rwkw depending on how tired the engine is. Also the brilliant thing about commodores is you are invisible to the cops if you keep it clean, nice cheap hub caps instead of just showing stockies and rarely if ever will you get pulled over. I'm off my P's in 3 weeks and i've never been pulled over by the cops before *touches wood*, yet my car has all those mods and more. Plus they are cheap as chips, I bought my car for $750, if they break they are cheap to fix and if its too much of a problem just junk it and you'll get back a reasonable portion of the purchase price.

yeah what gets you ploice attention ina commodore is mismatched wheels, lack of mufflers and lowered so much it is sitting on bump stops. if you have half a brain and do mods sensibly then you won't get any attention.

xALmoN- how much are you selling your supra for??????

I'm asking for 10,500 with stock 16inches/17inch wheels, depending on what i can get.

How much you actually pay, it really depends on your negotiation skills.

But currently its just an EOI, i won't be ready to sell till end july, early august.

Hey, thanks for contributions.

I have been doing some research and have compilled an exell page of possible cars to buy, with stats and all. :D

My preference is still a R33/R32 GTS but am now looking at MR2, MX5, Impreza's and s14's. And if my money can stretch a bit Supra's and mitsubishi GTO's

I also have been talking with some people about FWD cars. They recommended i dont buy one because of traction prolems and oversteer. Therefore i have stopped looking around at cars like the AE86, SSS, MX6 etc. Is it that much different to RWD???????????

On the subject of commodores, i dont really like any of them (too common/ un unique) bar the VT/VX shape. It just sits right and looks good reasonably modified. I agree 100% on mad082's comment on commodres.

Also AWD vs RWD skylines???????????

I am Going too start test driving some cars too help me choose the right car.

Thanks

FWD's dont oversteer, and an AE86 is RWD. You wont really have too big of a traction issue in FWDs unless they have a fair bit of power and feed the throttle on through corners or dump the clutch. Both the SSS and fwd corolla handle well.

If your looking at skylines, just stick with a gts. For a RWD car they have a shitload of grip when your put good shocks, springs, sway bars, tyres and bushes. I know of Subaru and gts4 drivers that get into a false sense of security, going crazy speeds around corners and being careless just because they have "awd" They think their car wont come unstuck and they make up for their driving ability with the cars handling abilities. Truth is, AWD cars will understeer just like a fwd car if they're in the wrong hands. Too higher entry speed, or accelerating through the corner and the front wheels can lose traction.

I honestly cant think of a better car for the price than an r33 gts or na supra. So much better than anything Australian of the time. Huge aftermarket so prices are quite cheap for most parts.

oversteer is both fun and unsafe, and easy to stuff up in the rain and put it into a ditch. there are HEAPS of fwd cars that are lots of fun to drive.

i drove an mx6 before i bought the skyline and was really impressed. the gearbox on that one was fkd but to drive it was very enjoyable, tight and neat and had a decent chassis. didnt get any understeer, which is the fun killer with fwd.

if i were you i'd be looking at how cars feel, rather than their drive orientation. eg: mx6 was much more fun than commodores of that time, havn't friven any gts's tho

in any case, most driving won't be thrashing it around corners. and when you do, a bit of understeer is much more controllable than some oversteer. even in terrible cars you learn to control it so understeer isn't ridiculous anyways (except the holden vectra haha).

how many of the people you have spoken to have actually driven a fwd hard? 99% of people who bag out front wheel drives cars do it for 1 of 2 reasons. 1: they don't like them because you can be fully sick and drift them so that means they are shit. 2: they have never driven a fwd, or at least have never driven one hard, or the ones they have driven were from the late 80's or very early 90's and things have come a long way since then.

i say, don't listen to those people and actually drive one and see what you think. for everyday driving you won't notice a thing between a fwd and rwd. it is only once you start to push them hard that you will notice a difference, but neither is better than the other. they are just different. they both have areas where they are better than the other. i drive a SSS everday and it's a great car. the only time i notice any difference between it and a rwd is if i'm doing silly things in the wet, or really giving it the beans on a rough road where it will torque steer a bit, but that is hardly annoying or hard to control. you can easily control it

okay that clears things up a bit, As the people i asked about FWD's were either, a bit older or young and stupid.

ill have to check out some MX6's and try out the feel of a FWD. As i think galios said earlier "TEST DRIVING IS THE KEY".

Sorry about the AE86, They are RWD, i think i just stopped looking at them cause of the age factor, and i can get more modern cars which are just as good, or better, for roughly the same price.

I stuggled to find info/stats on the N/A impreza's. What are they like, weight, KW etc.????????

So im probably looking at these few cars at the moment and will soon start testing some out.

R33/R32 GTS

Impreza RX

MR2

s14

Supra

MX6

Thanks

impreza's, the rx and rs's anyways have a pretty impressive power to weight ratio, i think they're about 1200-1300kg (?) and the 2.5L 4 pot boxer engine has decent torque. you pay a fair bit for them though.

mr2 and mx5 are both 2 seaters (bothers some people), and the mx5 is often hailed by top gear as the classic british roadster reborn, ie: lots of fun...

Wow! You're selling it already?! What are you getting next?

Anyway OT, test drive all of them and feel for yourself. You probably wouldnt be pushing it THAT hard to notice the difference.

TT auto maybe? I need to find another job first though.

sister in law has a rx impreza. it's about a 2000 model. AWD, 2.0L. i've driven a bit round town and done a trip to brissy and back in it to pick her up from the airport. they aren't too bad. had a decent amount of go, ride well, comfy, etc. i still prefer my SSS over it (is a fraction faster, better on fuel, nicer feeling gearbox and marginally nicer ride), although i would definately take the impreza over a lot of other 4 cylinder cars in the same section of the market (lancers, etc). i've also driven a 2000 model liberty. it was nice as well, but what spoils them for me is the woodgrain, LOL

How about a mitsu fto ? Get the one with mivec and manual transmission...suprisingly fast with few bolt ons and handles great, especially with some decent sussy. You're looking at under 1200kg, v6 2L with mivec, 147kw and more. It's fwd but with good tires/sussy has a quite high grip threshold.

Also maybe look at civic/crx/integra's with engine swaps etc... civic with b18c2 or better is quite quick etc.

Please please take the above recommended cars to track first to learn 'em. Especially the Hondas... some of them are quite prone to lift off oversteer.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey, i, still 16 so in like two months i can get my P's and i've got an r33 GTS and it is a great first car.

The HICAS four wheel stearing is great round corners, if you want to kick it out its not hard at all in the wet.

Maintenance is fairly easy even though ive had a few small things to fix (coilpacks, radiator, injectors) small things that are basically consumable.

Power wise its good, r33's have VCT so u get 147kw, i got rid of the valve on the muffler at the back and it sounds really deep without being loud so awesum.

Got 18's and been lowered so far looks pretty good, tinted windows, some stickers, sub and neon in the boot, dual 3' dumpers and painted calipers.

Theres heaps to do, whenever you have a problem just jump on here and find the answer, fast, great handling, look pretty good, just get a bodykit if your not happy with it.

Supra wouldnt be bad but they got no boot (for the sub)but 3ltr so thats good but its got a distributor, coils way better! :(

pm me if any questions

    • Who did you have do the installation? I actually know someone who is VERY familiar with the AVS gear. The main point of contact though would be your installer.   Where are you based in NZ?
    • Look, realistically, those are some fairly chunky connectors and wires so it is a reasonably fair bet that that loom was involved in the redirection of the fuel pump and/or ECU/ignition power for the immobiliser. It's also fair to be that the new immobiliser is essentially the same thing as the old one, and so it probably needs the same stuff done to make it do what it has to do. Given that you are talking about a car that no-one else here is familiar with (I mean your exact car) and an alarm that I've never heard of before and so probably not many others are familiar with, and that some wire monkey has been messing with it out of our sight, it seems reasonable that the wire monkey should be fixing this.
    • Wheel alignment immediately. Not "when I get around to it". And further to what Duncan said - you cannot just put camber arms on and shorten them. You will introduce bump steer far in excess of what the car had with stock arms. You need adjustable tension arms and they need to be shortened also. The simplest approach is to shorten them the same % as the stock ones. This will not be correct or optimal, but it will be better than any other guess. The correct way to set the lengths of both arms is to use a properly built/set up bump steer gauge and trial and error the adjustments until you hit the camber you need and want and have minimum bump steer in the range of motion that the wheel is expected to travel. And what Duncan said about toe is also very true. And you cannot change the camber arm without also affecting toe. So when you have adjustable arms on the back of a Skyline, the car either needs to go to a talented wheel aligner (not your local tyre shop dropout), or you need to be able to do this stuff yourself at home. Guess which approach I have taken? I have built my own gear for camber, toe and bump steer measurement and I do all this on the flattest bit of concrete I have, with some shims under the tyres on one side to level the car.
    • Thought I would get some advice from others on this situation.    Relevant info: R33 GTS25t Link G4x ECU Walbro 255LPH w/ OEM FP Relay (No relay mod) Scenario: I accidentally messed up my old AVS S5 (rev.1) at the start of the year and the cars been immobilised. Also the siren BBU has completely failed; so I decided to upgrade it.  I got a newer AVS S5 (rev.2?) installed on Friday. The guy removed the old one and its immobilisers. Tried to start it; the car cranks but doesnt start.  The new one was installed and all the alarm functions seem to be working as they should; still wouldn't start Went to bed; got up on Friday morning and decided to have a look into the no start problem. Found the car completely dead.  Charged the battery; plugged it back in and found the brake lights were stuck on.  Unplugging the brake pedal switch the lights turn off. Plug it back in and theyre stuck on again. I tested the switch (continuity test and resistance); all looks good (0-1kohm).  On talking to AVS; found its because of the rubber stopper on the brake pedal; sure enough the middle of it is missing so have ordered a new one. One of those wear items; which was confusing what was going on However when I try unplugging the STOP Light fuses (under the dash and under the hood) the brake light still stays on. Should those fuses not cut the brake light circuit?  I then checked the ECU; FP Speed Error.  Testing the pump again; I can hear the relay clicking every time I switch it to ON. I unplugged the pump and put the multimeter across the plug. No continuity; im seeing 0.6V (ECU signal?) and when it switches the relay I think its like 20mA or 200mA). Not seeing 12.4V / 7-9A. As far as I know; the Fuel Pump was wired through one of the immobiliser relays on the old alarm.  He pulled some thick gauged harness out with the old alarm wiring; which looks to me like it was to bridge connections into the immobilisers? Before it got immobilised it was running just fine.  Im at a loss to why the FP is getting no voltage; I thought maybe the FP was faulty (even though I havent even done 50km on the new pump) but no voltage at the harness plug.  Questions: Could it be he didnt reconnect the fuel pump when testing it after the old alarm removal (before installing the new alarm)?  Is this a case of bridging to the brake lights instead of the fuel pump circuit? It's a bit beyond me as I dont do a lot with electrical; so have tried my best to diagnose what I think seems to make sense.  Seeking advice if theres for sure an issue with the alarm install to get him back here; or if I do infact, need an auto electrician to diagnose it.
    • Then, shorten them by 1cm, drop the car back down and have a visual look (or even better, use a spirit level across the wheel to see if you have less camber than before. You still want something like 1.5 for road use. Alternatively, if you have adjustable rear ride height (I assume you do if you have extreme camber wear), raise the suspension back to standard height until you can get it all aligned properly. Finally, keep in mind that wear on the inside of the tyre can be for incorrect toe, not just camber
