Sure, heel and toe lessons for all! Don't judge me by the DECA results though lol, my heel and toe efforts are much better than my overall DECA driving :P

its ok mate i wont, i see DECA as just a fun event anyway  .the only thing im sure i would suck at is trying to remember the directions on the skidpan, id stuff up all the time lol.

MX5 finishes 11th overall !!!!!!!

Got to be happy with that. It's interesting how much difference the type of skidpan course affects the lighter, lesser powered cars. If it's tight I'm right up there. If it is a straighter longer course I've got no hope. As for the Wang's, 114kW just isn't enough to keep up.

Thanks for a great day guys. I recently went along to a WRX club event and they made us feel second class. You guys are really make us feel welcome.

I'm going to hold you to that

No probs.

sif heal and toe on a skid pan... compression lockup is almost as good as using the handbrake;)

That has merit too. Seriously! I learnt if from Rowdy! It's very effective!

I used to do it a lot but now my handbrake ---> select first gear sequence is working well and I think it's quicker.

Awesome results! Im stoked to say the least!

Ryan when you said I wouldnt be competitve with Russells car on the last battle I didnt know you meant id get no points for it! All good anyway.

Im happy to fly the RB26 flag AND the Street Tyre flag, and of course happy about stomping on the RB20 flag :P

Tips on winning DECA: Big wing and red racing boots!

HAHA. RB20 flag will be picked up and flown proud for the fastest RWD skyline!!!

I thought you would still get points too. Lucky you were so far ahead it didn't matter.

Okay so I tried this whole heel and toe thing, and either I'm not doing it right, or my accelerator pedal is too far back. When I plant my foot hard on the brakes It's still about a cm or two higher than the accelerator at its highest point. Makes it very difficult to dip my heel that much lower than my toe.

Yeah bad luck every car's different; on mine the two pedals are even height so when the brake is down it's about an inch lower than the acccelerator.

Perhaps get one of those screw-on type pedal covers for your accelerator?

I wouldnt get too bogged down with heel-toe on skidpans...you dont really use it if youre ripping that e-brake to spin around cones. Its more a high speed thing.

IMO rippin that e-brake is more important.

True that. Dip that clutch, rip that handbrake, add the power :)

Kieran: Don't worrry, you'll learn it with time and it will become second nature.

You might heel toe on the downshift on the wangs but on the skid pan you would almost never need to use it...kez...don't waste your time worrying about that now...concentrate on taking the right lines and getting timing for the turns right...and remember to have fun...

As Hamish said it's not a true "heel and toe" action...it's more a roll of the foot (left side of foot pushing brake, right side blipping accelerator), particularly if you're a tall guy. Some cars you just can't do it in if you're too tall for it or if the pedal positions are completely wack. You're much better learning double clutching first to get the hang of blipping an accelerator. PM me and I'll organise an arvo to teach ya...

Spot on, Mat should know too, he smashed everyone

overall my times were not too bad for the big heavy awd auto stagea and first time at deca. Was a bit hard trying to get around some of those cones not being able to do hand brake turns they dont have one.might just run it in rwd next time taking the front drive shaft out see if that makes it a bit faster on the skid pan

Going to try to make it in august for another run as i had heaps of fun

There isn't a fuse you could pull out to do the same thing?

I remember that Caldina last time had some severe understeer issues particularly on the skiddy.

Great to see different cars out there!!

Also... great result!! Well done!

I noticed this as well.. Considering the engine in my car when it came out, had 75kw @ the flywheel, 26 years later I'm tipping its making a lot less.

With drive train losses I'm putting it at about 30-40rwkw at the moment!

My long wang runs couldn't have been any faster, i was driving the pants off it, and yet I'm way down the field.

also that first battle was very high-power friendly!!

But hey... there is many more-powerful cars below me so I am happy....

Sucks to be you guys :D

:/:);) ;)

i have a question about this heel toe stuff, what do you mean by rev matching, what are you matching them to and how do you know where the revs should be for rev matching?

http://www.drivingfast.net/car-control/heel-toe-shifting.htm

By double clutch heel toe you're basically matching the layshaft AND the engine to the speed of the lower gear. It's different for every car depending on your gear ratios, so you just gotta practise.

If you dont' double clutch, and ONLY heel toe then you're only matching the speed of the engine which avoids the jerkiness but still beats up on the synchros.

    • Also, I logged some data from the ECU for each session (mostly oil pressures and various temps, but also speed, revs etc, can't believe I forgot accelerator position). The Ecutek data loads nicely to datazap, I got good data from sessions 2, 3 and 4: https://datazap.me/u/duncanhandleyhgeconsultingcomau/250813-wakefield-session-2?log=0&data=7 https://datazap.me/u/duncanhandleyhgeconsultingcomau/250813-wakefield-session-3?log=0&data=6 https://datazap.me/u/duncanhandleyhgeconsultingcomau/250813-wakefield-session-4?log=0&data=6 Each session is cut into 3 files but loaded together, you can change between them in the top left. As the test sessions are mostly about the car, not me, I basically start by checking the oil pressure (good, or at least consistent all day). These have an electrically controlled oil pump which targets 25psi(!) at low load and 50 at high. I'm running a much thicker oil than recommended by nissan (they said 0w20, I'm running 10w40) so its a little higher. The main thing is that it doesn't drop too far, eg in the long left hand fish hook, or under brakes so I know I'm not getting oil surge. Good start. Then Oil and Coolant temp, plus intercooler and intake temps, like this: Keeping in mind ambient was about 5o at session 2, I'd say the oil temp is good. The coolant temp as OK but a big worry for hot days (it was getting to 110 back in Feb when it was 35o) so I need to keep addressing that. The water to air intercooler is working totally backwards where we get 5o air in the intake, squish/warm it in the turbos (unknown temp) then run it through the intercoolers which are say 65o max in this case, then the result is 20o air into the engine......the day was too atypical to draw a conclusion on that I think, in the united states of freedom they do a lot of upsizing the intercooler and heat exchanger cores to get those temps down but they were OK this time. The other interesting (but not concerning) part for me was the turbo speed vs boost graph: I circled an example from the main straight. With the tune boost peaks at around 18psi but it deliberately drops to about 14psi at redline because the turbos are tiny - they choke at high revs and just create more heat than power if you run them hard all the way. But you can also see the turbo speed at the same time; it raises from about 180,000rpm to 210,000rpm which the boost falls....imagine the turbine speed if they held 18psi to redline. The wastegates are electrically controlled so there is a heap of logic about boost target, actual boost, delta etc etc but it all seems to work well
    • hahah when youtube subscribers are faster than my updates here. Yes some vid from the day is up, here:  Note that as with all track day videos it is boring watching after the bloopers at the start.  The off was a genuine surprise to me, I've literally done a thousand laps around the place and I've never had instability there; basically it rolled into oversteer, slipped, gripped and spat me out. On the way off I mowed down one of the instructor's cones and it sat there all day looking at me with accusing cone eyes as I drove past. 1:13:20 was my fastest lap, and it was in the second session, 3rd lap.  It (or me!) got slower throughout the day as it got hotter.
    • It sounds like you want what the Toyota Landcruisers have for their roof racks. Wanna know what you end up with? Rust holes in the roof, and water everywhere...
    • Discovered today that if I select reverse first and take my foot off the brake, then select drive, the drive indicator light works and so does the tiptronic gear indicator.
    • Ok so after much research and talking with knowledgeable people I've got my turbo conversion done and it's all running great other than 1 small issue.  Car has remained auto with the na auto and tcm, I've used a stagea ecu with. NIstune board and everything is great other than my gear selection on the dash. It illuminates park, reverse, neutral, 3rd and 2nd. But nothing drive or what gear your in when you pop it into tiptronic.  I'm sure there is maybe 1 wire in the ecu plug I need to move to rectify this. Does anyone here have any ideas?   Cheers guys
